2 landing attempts and still not down.

I think it's windy there

Madeira is known for this (8th most dangerous airport in the world).
I’m ex travel industry and several times a season we’d have a flight diverted and overnighted elsewhere, usually Port Santo but a few times Faro.

idontlikealdi · 13/01/2024 10:34

Well here goes my productive morning!

I immediately want to know the most dangerous airports 1-7.

What happens if you are diverted? Do you have to stay on the plane or do you get off and have to go through security etc again?

@BasilParsley

I'm sad enough that I've got one of their antennas attached to my roof so I feed into the data...

What!? No?! How?! Tell me more!!!!

Here's the linky-link.

It cost me about £120 in parts to get it set up and running but then I get a FREE business plan subscription which is worth about $500 annually.

However, if you live near certain airports where extra data is required, you can get it all free - this is the 'most wanted' list:

BobnLen · 13/01/2024 10:37

Our flight was delayed from Madeira because it was windy, whereas it probably would have been ok from another airport

Walkingtheplank · 13/01/2024 10:42

This is my morning gone now!

EwwSprouts · 13/01/2024 10:45

Just been on it for the first time. Am overly excited that if you click on a helicopter flight the blades are twirling!

weebarra · 13/01/2024 10:47

Has anyone noticed that many more planes are coming up as 'blocked' now? Is it because I'm using the free version?
The other TAP one looks to be diverting now too. My mum and dad are off to Madeira next week, I wonder if they know about the airport!

Walkingtheplank · 13/01/2024 10:48

So what is Porto Santo like - can it accommodate so many extra passengers?

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/01/2024 10:51

Last time I went to Madeira I had a 26 hour delay on the return due to winds. There's an outdoor area after check in and we spent hours watching planes attempting to land in the wind 😱 Gorgeous island, horrible airport!

BigBundleOfFluff · 13/01/2024 10:52

@BasilParsley that's fascinating, thank you for sharing!

Joeslaol00 · 13/01/2024 10:55

I am a FR nerd 🧐 How do you find the most tracked on the app ?

FruitBowlCrazy · 13/01/2024 10:58

Well now I know what I'm going to spend the rest of my morning doing...

What with that and lightningmaps.org, my housework will have to wait!

FiveShelties · 12/01/2024 23:57

Yes, I have read that somewhere too. It is an interesting landing.

Would hate to get to the airport and then have to return.

Interesting and quite scary the first time!

Walkingtheplank · 13/01/2024 11:02

I had an interesting watch last week. I was working from home and heard a strange sounding plane above the house so quickly looked it up on FR. It was supposed to be landing at an airport that I'm not on the flight path fie and after several attempts it landed elsewhere. I couldn't work out why though.

Walkingtheplank · 13/01/2024 11:04

I assume Easyjet don't like to divert. That one from Lyon has been up there for ages.

Uksnowmap when snow is due, too 😁. I can waste hours on these sites!

BambooWhoosh · 13/01/2024 11:07

Looks like TP1687 fed up and heading back to Lisbon?!

SnapdragonToadflax · 13/01/2024 11:08

Bloody love Flight Radar. I have the app on my homescreen, I use it so much. We seem to live on the flight path from Brize Norton and get some huge/fast/noisy military planes over, which rarely show up - so annoying.

Thank you for your service...😁 Locally we're in a bit of an FR hole, certainly at low altitude and I've thought about doing similar but can't justify the spend.

Re Madera...never been there but know for many airlines it's a " visit" airport..i.e. the first time a pilot goes there need to go with a trainer... These days with the improvements a lot more of those sorts of clearances can be done in the simulator.

No idea what the worse 7 airports in the world are, or even how you'd define it. There are a few in Central/South America and also in Asia which have nasty combinations of being at high elevation, surrounded by high terrain and also subject to occasional nasty weather...places like Mexico City and Bogota can be interesting.

Try looking at ADS-B exchange, not as user friendly as FlightRadar but it tends to filter out less military and other traffic:

Four planes are trying to land!

saraclara · 13/01/2024 11:14

Well this is certainly putting me off going to Madeira!
