2 landing attempts and still not down.

I think it's windy there

You’ve got me hooked on this ! One from Tenerife has landed.

At the first attempt too. So maybe the wind is dropping.

Ohmylovejune · 13/01/2024 19:43

We went to Madeira just before they extended the runway. You could literally see a women pegging out her washing on the hillside as we landed and the plane used all.the runway....which ended at the sea! It was a really scary landing .... without any weather issues.

TimeFlying · 13/01/2024 19:44

We were on one of the flights which had to land at Porto Santo yesterday. Even the captain said in all his years of flying he’d never had to land there before.

when we eventually landed at Funchal, for the first time ever , I joined into applause😂

I must be old, my first thought was how well her washing must dry.

What other airports are good to watch, anyone have a favourite?

Good for you. I'd be terrified.

I'm glad you're all laughing at how scared I and others would find it... hope it makes you feel big.

Posters are either fake bravado or robots.

Of course it is scary, aborting landing is scary, circling airspace for ages knowing it is challenging landing is scary.

Doesn't matter if it is statistically safe, still scary.

I was scared when we were circling Heathrow and they moved me from the emergency exit door (I'm 5ft and 6 stone) and put a large man in my seat.

Coldilocks · 13/01/2024 19:56

There are about 4/5 planes in convoy all waiting to land at Funchal. Everyone deserves a stiff drink.

Nope, I don't just love MN because of the threads but because there is always someone that is actually involved!

Are you having a holiday?

Yes but .....

whatausername · 13/01/2024 20:01

Nooooo. Enter Air!

whatausername · 13/01/2024 19:23

Look, it's not worth stressing. In many of the biggest fatalities the investigators have said it would have happened at such a speed people would haven't been aware until the very very end. A couple of cases in particular passengers wouldn't have known until the plane had hit the water because the loss of altitude was so fast and because altitude changes can be quite imperceptible unless you have ear or sinus problems. Alao in those cases the impact would cause a lot of people to die extremely quickly so they'd have not noticed the water anyway! So really, it is a waste of energy worrying, just relax and enjoy the holiday or change of scene or whatever it is 🙂

Look, that doesn't really help knowing if I die on a plane it will be instant..

Oh my goodness leaning about most tracked has changed everything!

At the first attempt too. So maybe the wind is dropping.

Wind has dropped ever so slightly from earlier, but the cloud base and visibility is much improved.

lunarleap · 13/01/2024 20:05

Georgyporky · 13/01/2024 19:35

Not big, just rational.
There are courses for people who are scared of flying.
Or, perhaps, stick to land travel.

The statistics for accidents or death via land or air travel are interesting.

I'm not scared of flying. I would be scared on a flight zig zagging all over the place coming into land and doing go arounds. I've been on a go around, I was scared even though LOGICALLY it's just an every day thing and in fact means it's safe.

So I don't need a course thank you very much.

Georgyporky · 13/01/2024 20:05

"Look, that doesn't really help knowing if I die on a plane it will be instant.."

Better than waiting on a trolley for umpteen hours, or waiting for an ambulance that arrives too late.

Please share about most tracked, to save me having to wade back through the thread. I know I saw it somewhere earlier though. Forgive my laziness.

whatausername · 13/01/2024 20:05

@lunarleap my point was that you won't necessarily have much of an inkling that anything has gone wrong at all in the first place. I tried to reassure you but ah well, maybe dodge these threads instead! Can't be nice spending your non-flying time stressing too

I'm not sat here stressing about flying. All I said was being on a plane doing this will it land/won't it land would be pretty scary for me and I will avoid it as a holiday destination.

No wonder! I'd have been clapping and cheering.

whatausername · 13/01/2024 20:09

Next in line, Ryanair! I wonder if they up the pressure on their crew to hit targets? They are notorious profit-focused misers.

I think watching threads and landings or aborted landings/diversions like this is very reassuring actually, but I know you might not agree!

When I look at all the movements today, those that landed got down safely, obviously due to pilot skill and working to the airline's limit rules for attempts etc. Those that didn't or couldn't land were the result again of pilot decision/airline rules/max wind speed etc. and there were safe diversions.

In past years I would have died of fright if on a plane during something like this. However I now realise that it is all done within the safety limits and as my old Dad used to say, "the pilot doesn't want to die either!" (GermanWings is a different matter and very traumatic and sad though not connected with safety).

I don't like being involved in a windy landing, or a go around, or a sideways final approach, but I trust the pilots and crew. I have to!

TimeFlying · 13/01/2024 20:16

Yes we’re on hols. It’s pouring with rain but warm!
the pilot was worried about running out of fuel because of us circling for so long . That’s what spooked me
