US/ UK set for military action in Yemen

In light of recent attacks on goods ships by the Iranian backed Houthis,(in solidarity of the people of Gaza), US and UK look set to bomb the Houthi held parts of Yemen.

What is everyone’s thoughts and fears about this?

For me, I wish we would be campaigning for a ceasefire in Gaza rather than this. Also, I think it sets the way for wider war with Iran.

Looking at the BBC news feed that looks quite possible 😬

Whu · 11/01/2024 22:13

I’m also sick of it always being us getting involved. Yes the attacks on shipping is annoying but no one has been killed.

You don’t see other European countries getting involved like this, why is it always us?

There was a ceasefire, but it was broken on 7th Oct, no?

RocketIceLollie · 11/01/2024 22:17

These attacks on the shipping is going to see a rise in cost of goods if it carries on long term. Military action is never ideal though. As usual that whole region is just a disaster really.

Let’s not rehash old ground on this thread it’s about current developments.

Although l can’t believe you think that a despicable terrorist attack gives the right for absolute annihilation of a country and all its innocent men, women and children who are dying in their thousands. Do you think the war should go on endlessly then I presume… All wars must end!

There’s a lot more nuance than that though…

Whu · 11/01/2024 22:25

I am aware of much of that @decisionssmecisions although I’m not on a chat forum proclaiming to be a Middle East expert. I do know that our continual military involvement in destabilising the region has largely been catastrophic.
What I don’t understand is why out of all the countries in the world, or even just in Europe, why is it always us? Why are we the world’s policeman we are small island thousands of miles away.

@Whu Is it because UK always follows the US maybe? And why that is, I do not know.

decisionssmecisions · 11/01/2024 22:34

But you’re asking why the US & the UK are getting involved when all commercial shipping regardless of nationality has been threatened by the Houthis, who aren’t backing down despite warnings?

5thCommandment · 11/01/2024 22:35

The purpose of any intervention is to ensure safe shipping routes and keep sailors safe. It also keeps prices down for us rather than have to pay additional costs of fuel to ship via Africa. I support intervention, I doubt we will do anything more than send another ship and patrol the route more anyway.

stormy4319trevor · 11/01/2024 22:43

@5thCommandment They are talking about strikes, according to Guardian. Experts have concerns about a wider bombing campaign harming civilians, so I hope any action will avoid this.

decisionssmecisions · 11/01/2024 22:49

@stormy4319trevor the attacks on ships have been happening since Nov I believe & despite warnings haven’t stopped hence why words are ramping up. It’s not in any governments interest to have their shipping routes disrupted.

bobomomo · 11/01/2024 22:52

Worrying, i have a friend on Diamond

decisionssmecisions · 11/01/2024 22:55

“ A Treasury assessment warned before Christmas that disruption to shipping could shrink the British economy by as much as 0.3 per cent. That figure is now expected to be worse.”

One reason why

CormorantStrikesBack · 11/01/2024 22:55

I’m worried. Short term this has the potential to be like another Iraq War. Long term god knows what it might mean in the Middle East and then increasing terrorism and potential attacks on the West.

CormorantStrikesBack · 11/01/2024 22:58

And definitely worried about Iran. Especially with their potential for nuclear weapons l

Nope - one of the most violent few months in years. I don’t know why people keep sayin this still.

I know there have been warnings and Houthis chose to continue, so they accept the risk. But I really don't want civilians harmed.

I think we will see more refugees in Europe, which is tragic for them and a source of discontent in some populations. I really wish there could be peace in the ME.

Jesus Christ. Just what we need to get 2024 off to a flying start - our unelected PM fully cementing our position as America's bitch.

Btw Russia is pretty friendly with Yemen.

Journeytosober · 12/01/2024 00:01

I’m scared to be honest.

IamaPopof · 12/01/2024 00:03

You do know that the Saudis are involved in this too and have been for a while?

BettyBakesCakes · 12/01/2024 00:09

I can't believe how quickly this has happened.
