US/ UK set for military action in Yemen

In light of recent attacks on goods ships by the Iranian backed Houthis,(in solidarity of the people of Gaza), US and UK look set to bomb the Houthi held parts of Yemen.

What is everyone’s thoughts and fears about this?

For me, I wish we would be campaigning for a ceasefire in Gaza rather than this. Also, I think it sets the way for wider war with Iran.

Lovely to see so many Brits vocally giving their support to Hamas and Iran Hmm

Gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside doesn't it. That is the internet for you.

Plus this is a forum can be accessed by the whole world, so we have no idea where anyone else is living etc

Well lets support the US, UK and Israel who like to bomb innocent civilians instead shall we? Who have murdered more innocent people and committed worse atrocities than Hamas and Houthis.

As Brits, let's ignore when the west kills/bombs civilians but condemn if they're Arab right?

There’s always some who are the direct opposite to ‘my country right or wrong’ crowd; they’re just as stupid, mind. They’ll always support some religious nutcase or secular dictator over anything the western liberal democracies do.

Says the foolish person, well insulated from the harm that these Islamist psychopaths commit. Well insulated in our safe western democracy, protected by the same armed forces they accuse of being baby killers.

So it would seem

I’m also sick of it always being us getting involved. Yes the attacks on shipping is annoying but no one has been killed.

You don’t see other European countries getting involved like this, why is it always us?

The Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Bahrain provided support for the mission according to Biden.

A joint statement by the United States, Britain, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and South Korea said the “aim remains to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea”.

15% of all shipping trade comes through the Red Sea.

That's clothes, oil, food etc.

The law is clear; the attacks by the Houthis on the ships going through the Red Sea is unlawful.

Yesterday the Houthis (who overthrew the government of Yemen BTW in a bloody coup and have been responsible for the deaths of thousands, have attacked Saudi and other Arab allies with ballistic missiles and who most of the Arab world dislike and are actively fighting against) attacked a British military ship. They have attacked multiple cargo ships. They are responsible for 400k+ civilian deaths due to their hoarding of aid, targeting civilians etc. These are not good guys. Stop painting them as victims.

These people do not listen to words or negotiations.

And, unlike the Houthis, the UK and US targeted military installations. Not civilians.

The people complaining about how prices have increased due to COL fail to realise that the Houthis actions are ALSO contributing to the increasing prices.

Quite frankly, the idiocy of some people astounds me.

Edit: Floorwipes, that wasn't aimed at you but the person you quoted!

Do you understand that it is entirely possible to condemn what is going on in Gaza and think what the Houthis are doing is unacceptable and needs dealing with?

The world isn’t split into goodies and baddies and you don’t have to be on the side of the Houthis just because they’re claiming that they’re acting out of concern for Gaza (rather than e.g. support for Hamas, or just to stir up shit).

Yes, and Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland etc. At present I think it was inevitable, since ample warnings were given. But I'm also puzzled why the rest of Europe isn't so vocal about it.

Well the French foreign ministry said: “Through these armed actions, the Houthis bear the extremely heavy responsibility for the regional escalation.”

I'm a grown woman, and I know this is a childish, simplistic, "throwing my toys out of the pram" comment.......
But I'm so bloody sick and angry at our beautiful world being wrecked by willy-waving twats causing destruction and death to innocent people, all because they can't have what they want.
I say willy-waving because it's men who are the perpetrators, time and time again.
Sorry - I did own that I am being childish......

Or maybe some of us, like many experts in anti-terrorism, don't think that military assaults on highly mobile and ideology-driven terrorist groups are likely to have any impact, and may actually fuel it's growth. There is certainly evidence that the Saudi bombing of Houthi areas has created outrage and hugely strengthened their local support.

fleurneige · 12/01/2024 19:14

Perhaps the most dangerous thing the UK could have done at the moment. Terrifying.

fleurneige · 12/01/2024 19:16

BorgQueen- and do you really thing that attacking them and giving them the excuse to strike back, will make us all safer? Really ?

They don’t need an ‘excuse’. It’s what they’ve been doing.

ghlily · 12/01/2024 19:19

The UK needs to stop getting involved unnecessarily. When America says jump, British politicians say how high. 🙄

fleurneige · 12/01/2024 19:19

And what then? There are NO winners if it truly kicks off. And it is all linked to the UK/USA support of Israel.

Just seen this nice clear visual of other countries positions on all this currently

(For some reason Jordan's states made me chuckle. Think it is because they look like they are into conspiracy theories on this one. To much time on social media or something 😂)
