What age would you quietly think is young to have a baby?

Times are changing and first time parents definitely seem a lot older around where I am. Myself and DH are quite young but would like a family. Just curious to know what age MNers would privately think was young, or too young!

My son and now DIL had their first at 19. They've worked hard and done well, own a beautiful home and both have good careers.
They're 36 now and things just get better and better for them. Incredibly happy couple too.

It can work.

DeedlessIndeed · 09/01/2024 21:18

Pregnant with my first and am 30. Had a lot of people at work express surprise that I'm starting early. I thought I'd left it until the average time!

Definitely agree that people's attitudes are changing.

I don't think a particular age, as I believe circumstances matter more. If two people are in a happy, loving relationship and both want a child, have a home and are living responsible lives.

Mum2jenny · 09/01/2024 21:18

Under 22 I consider too young, between 22-30 a bit too young, over 30 with good lifestyle choices ok. You do need to live a bit before having children imo.

pponk · 09/01/2024 21:18

27 or under

Under 25 young, under 20 too young

Exactly my thoughts

adriftinadenofvipers · 09/01/2024 21:18

Under 25 - young.

Under 22 - too young.

Under 20 - definitely not.

Saschka · 09/01/2024 21:19

Too young for me - 25. Too young for anyone - under 20.

But I’d never express that. Nobody needs to go through an unwanted pregnancy, so presumably anyone who has a baby under 20 has chosen to. Their reproductive choices are none of my business.

Kalevala · 09/01/2024 21:20

Anything under 30 is young now (not saying it is too young though, it's just under the average age!). I had mine at 31, which I believe is the new average. Been with my DH since i was 19 and always wanted a family, but just wanted to be very financially secure. Now we're mortgage free so can afford anything we want for our son, so no regrets on waiting!

Kalevala · 09/01/2024 21:22

Under 21 young, under 18 too young

watchingsmurfs · 09/01/2024 21:22

Under 30 young, under 24 too young.

Joeslaol00 · 09/01/2024 21:24

Depends on circumstances,aspirations and maturity.

Ostryga · 09/01/2024 21:24

I was 28 when I had Dd and I felt like a kid still. When someone announces their pregnancy when they’re under 30 I think my goodness they’re so young! Even though they’re not.

Under 23 I usually think is a bad idea.

AvengedQuince · 09/01/2024 21:26

I was 22, a similar age to my parents and three of my grandparents. I'd say under 20 is young, under 16 too young.

this.

noooooooo · 09/01/2024 21:26

My perception has changed as the years have gone on.

I was 26 and didn’t feel particularly young. I was the oldest mum in the maternity unit and the only first timer. However, I also had ‘young professional’ pals who thought 26 was early to be having a baby.

I’d have said then 21+ was fine, but now my kids are getting older I sort of think hell no at the thought of them being parents in the next five years. However, it would depend on the individual, some people are very mature.

WDKYMYS · 09/01/2024 21:26

Under 25 I think is too young. I wouldn’t judge anyone under 25, but I would think to myself they were throwing away the best years of their life. I think they are the years when you should be free and enjoying yourself with no commitments.

savethatkitty · 09/01/2024 21:26

Under 25.

StarDolphins · 09/01/2024 21:27

Under 26

BassoContinuo · 09/01/2024 21:28

I’d see anyone under 25 as young, and anyone who is less than a couple of years out of full time education as too young.

Fairylights21 · 09/01/2024 21:29

Under 25 in most cases. I know someone who was 27 and they got lots of comments behind their back at work about being too young.

If you have been together a while, done a bit of travelling and settled then any age.

Suchardchoccy · 09/01/2024 21:30

I had my first at 25, second at 27 and I'm now 28 and pregnant with my third. I would say I was young when I started but not too young, and that's only because most people have kids in their 30s
