Electric toothbrushes - one each or just a head each?

I'm looking at a new brush for my son. We currently have 3 (bulky) electric brushes and I wondered about sharing the handle and having a head each. I'm not sure why but it feels a bit weird. Does anyone do this ? I did it with my youngest when he was tiny but he's got his own now. Is it chance to clear space or weird ?

Sharing a handle always seems a gross idea to me! Find it hard to believe any families actually do this.

Nix32 · 07/01/2024 19:30

Not weird in the slightest! Family with teens - we share a handle.

Allywill · 07/01/2024 19:30

Personally I’d want one each. The handle can get a bit gross - not sure I’d want to share tbh. Plus what if your son goes on a sleepover or away with school?

One handle , three brushes. It's not at all gross. It gets rinsed after each use.

SiobahnRoy · 07/01/2024 19:31

We share, can’t see why it would be gross. We have non electric for nights away etc.

BMW6 · 07/01/2024 19:32

It's only the head that goes in your mouth. 🙄

Houseplanter · 07/01/2024 19:32

I've always wondered this too, because of the coloured rings that come with the head

Not for me though, I need my own.

GrandHighPoohbah · 07/01/2024 19:34

For me, the whole toothbrush is a personal grooming item so no sharing in our house. I am not convinced everyone would remember to swap it to their own head.

CluelessPadme · 07/01/2024 19:35

No way would I share. The coloured heads do seem to suggest it, but then if you look at the handle and the spike the head sits on, I wouldn’t want other people’s gunk on there, even if it was family

BattyOwl · 07/01/2024 19:37

There are some things that I would never ever share. A car and my toothbrush are my top two things

I don't think it's too much to ask to have your own actual toothbrush. I'd never want to share one - despite changing the head

Herehare · 07/01/2024 19:37

Share with partner, would not inflict that on an older child or teen though.

Soontobe60 · 07/01/2024 19:38

Absolutely not! Our mouths are full of bacteria. That bacteria dribbles down the toothbrush head onto the shaft. Unless you’re going to disinfect it after every use, the bacteria’s going to end up in someone else’s mouth. Gross!

RandomMess · 07/01/2024 19:39

I won't share 🤮

JingleSnowmanTree · 07/01/2024 19:39

No, it's mine, all mine!

id share with my partner, but that's it!

This. Share with DH and would happily share with DCs too (they only have manual ones currently though).

Only on Mumsnet would this be considered disgusting! I can't see why people who wouldn't share a toothbrush head would be happy using the same plates, cups, cutlery etc as their family.

IncognitoUsername · 07/01/2024 19:42

I wouldn’t share mine - I wouldn’t trust DS (or DH for that mater!) to a) remember and b) be arsed to swop to their own head.

Floralnomad · 07/01/2024 19:47

We have one each , can’t imagine keep taking the head on and off .

megletthesecond · 07/01/2024 19:49

We have one each. It means everyone is responsible for charging their own, or else the dc's wouldn't bother, and we don't have to fiddle about with heads all the time.

RandomMess · 07/01/2024 19:50

@PeeblesPobble because they wouldn't wash the handle properly after they used it and they would toothpaste mess and dribble on it.

Mamma4573 · 07/01/2024 19:52

I share the handle with my partner. I mean think about everything else you share, when you kiss, have sex, share an apple or a spoon etc.

And toothbrush handles can be cleaned. I would consider giving my kid his own if he's a teen and should be rinsing it but doesn't.

We also take the head off the handle each time, so you're responsible for putting your own head on the handle.

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/01/2024 19:52

Hmmm. I'm not against sharing per se, but I rinse and wipe the handle of mine every use so I don't get gunk build up and DH does not, so I wouldn't share with him.

seriously?

I share a handle with DH. We quite often exchange bacteria from our mouths anyway.

Surely the fact the handles come with multiple different coloured heads indicates that you share the body of the toothbrush?

Lizzieregina · 07/01/2024 19:55

I share with my DD. The head gets removed and cleaned after use, so no forgetting to change heads. I think the whole fact that they’re color coded is for exactly this reason.

I won’t share with DH though. He doesn’t clean the handle adequately (also we now have different bathrooms).

Oh and mine is plugged in beside the sink all the time, so no recharging concerns.

Destiny123 · 07/01/2024 19:55

The original oral-b we had as a kid had a box attached to the charger for 3 toothbrush head slots and me and my bro shared the base bit for years

Papillon23 · 07/01/2024 19:56

Sharing seems like the most sensible option to me - just have to rinse it if gets toothpaste-y.

Only thing is if you need a spare for if people go away for world etc or if you're all happy using a normal toothbrush when away.
