Electric toothbrushes - one each or just a head each?

I'm looking at a new brush for my son. We currently have 3 (bulky) electric brushes and I wondered about sharing the handle and having a head each. I'm not sure why but it feels a bit weird. Does anyone do this ? I did it with my youngest when he was tiny but he's got his own now. Is it chance to clear space or weird ?

Another vote for one brush, 3 heads! We all clean and rinse after use and have standard toothbrushes for overnight trips etc. What would be gross would be people sharing the actual toothbrush heads!

oxblood · 07/01/2024 22:56

Ugh I cannot believe what I have just been reading. I swear to God you lot are gross.
Spit and toothpaste from your mouth goes down that handle. I feel a bit sick now 🤢

“Not exactly expensive”

depends how many family members you are talking about and how long you want it to last

Yeah, ours cost $140, not my idea of cheap!

I don't know how you brush your teeth but it really doesn't here.

I've only ever seen people sharing electric toothbrushes on Mumsnet. It's such a bizarre concept to me.

What if you all want to brush your teeth at the same time?
Or what if 1 person isn't great at cleaning the handle?

It's a big fat no from me.

It literally takes two minutes to brush your teeth, so not exactly long for someone to wait. I can't imagine we'd all be crowding round the sink to brush at the exact same time anyway.

EffortlessDelegation · 07/01/2024 23:14

We've only got one bathroom so we can't brush our teeth at the same time.

Alloveragain3 · 07/01/2024 23:17

@PeeblesPobble I guess every family will have a different routine. It's not unusual for my DH, DS and I to all be brushing at the same time while we get toddler DS ready for bed.

If we shared, a 2 minute task would become 6 minutes.

Regardless, something about sharing such an "intimate" object doesn't sit right with me, even if it is just the handle :/
Maybe I'm odd though, as I have no issue sharing towels and I know DH hates this!

vipersnest1 · 07/01/2024 23:23

When my DCs were at home, they shared a handle and I had my own. This worked pretty well (we had separate bathrooms).
If you really don't want to share handles, keep an eye out for when they are on sale - I've never bought a full price one, except the first and that was the cheapest possible. That way you can keep adding handles until everyone is happy for minimal outlay.

I wouldn’t share tbh. On another note has anyone ever seen a charger that does multiple toothbrushes so you don’t have to remember to switch them over.

It's getting slightly irritating. My DC are not exactly 'unclean'. They shower too much & observe personal hygiene. They generally do their bit around the house.

But they would need endless nagging to remove and store a toothbrush head; and clean the body of it. Not unclean, just a bit lazy & heedless about certain things.

I've never had to nag my son about this. He's a horribly normal teenager and I nag him about replacing the loo roll, putting his dirty socks in the laundry basket, bringing cups downstairs etc, but when it comes to the toothbrush handle he's pretty good about it.
Everyone's different. We also share towels, will drink from the same can/bottle and other things that involve an exchange of cells.
We have no health concerns or allergies. I accept that other people find it gross, and know that everyone has different opinions on these things, but I'm fine with how we live our life.

ivfbabymomma1 · 08/01/2024 00:05

Me and DH share a handle (wash between uses) but DS has his own. We don't share a bathroom so it wouldn't make sense

KenAdams · 08/01/2024 00:08

They're supposed to be shared. Ours even comes with a holder for the different heads.

caringcarer · 08/01/2024 00:09

I share with my partner. We just have different heads. I have pink and he has grey ATM. How is it different to snogging him? DC have their own.

Christmasnutcracker · 08/01/2024 00:11

I never knew sharing a handle was a thing.

It seems weird to me tbh.

My kids use the bathroom together as in they brush at the same time. They'd have to wait for the other to finish before they could use their brush.

Tbh I find the whole idea utterly bizarre. It would never have crossed my mind that this is a thing.

You should probably seek therapy.
Thats not a normal response.

Kpo58 · 08/01/2024 07:08

It depends on the brand. Braun you end up with gunk on the handle due to the annoying hole they have on the toothbrush heads. Sonicare doesn't have this problem.

Monkeybutt1 · 08/01/2024 07:34

3 of us here, we all share the handle, we clean our own toothbrush head and the handle after use and put it back to charge. I do not see the issue at all, we all clean the handle really well and dry it when we are done. Some of the reactions on here are a bit ridiculous. If I said I had shared a spoon with DH or DS no one would bat an eyelid but heaven forbid we share a handle of a toothbrush that doesn't even go in our mouth and gets cleaned anyway. The grossest people are those who have their own and leave the head on without cleaning it.

Ah I have sonicare and don't think I've ever used a Braun one.

reluctantbrit · 08/01/2024 07:59

We share handles, they are cleaned by the person using them, so nothing gross about it.

For holidays, sleepover, trips each person has travel toothbrushes. Electric ones are too bulky to carry around and need a charger after some time (won't work if you are camping with the Scouts for a week).

TheSmallAssassin · 08/01/2024 22:34

PollyOrange · 07/01/2024 22:33

Yikes. I'm not glad I asked now. Seems the consensus is nope to sharing. So now I'm getting 2 cheaper ones for the same price as the sharer one

I really wouldn't count these responses as a consensus, there are obviously a few people on here who think it's somehow wrong to share and are taking the time to tell you, but these handles are literally made by the manufacturer to be shared, so it really can't be that terrible to use them as designed like lots of us do.

I am more concerned about people not cleaning their handles after using them. That's more grim than sharing a cleaned one.

TabbyM · 09/01/2024 15:34

I thought the coloured rings were for if you have 2 toothbrushes the same (as we do). Would never share as DH's one is much mankier than mine .

Serencwtch · 09/01/2024 17:30

I share with DH but no way with the kids.
I'm the one that has to keep it clean though!

Christmasnutcracker · 09/01/2024 20:50

I find it bizarre. If you were sharing a flat with your best friend and washed both people's clothes together, would you then have a communal knicker drawer and both take from it?
The ugh feeling from even thinking about that is what I feel when reading about people sharing electric toothbrush handles.

This. They aren't that expensive, one each.
