Electric toothbrushes - one each or just a head each?

PollyOrange · 07/01/2024 19:24

I'm looking at a new brush for my son. We currently have 3 (bulky) electric brushes and I wondered about sharing the handle and having a head each. I'm not sure why but it feels a bit weird. Does anyone do this ? I did it with my youngest when he was tiny but he's got his own now. Is it chance to clear space or weird ?

No it is nothing like sharing towels.

Yes it is like sharing towels.

I share with dh.
It's fine.

It really bears no resemblance whatsoever to sharing towels.

Tinybrother · 07/01/2024 22:20

How is it like sharing towels? (Just to move this along a bit)

For me, the whole toothbrush is a personal grooming item so no sharing in our house. I am not convinced everyone would remember to swap it to their own head.

Edited

Surely, if you share, you put on your own head and take it off yourself afterwards, rather than leaving it on for the next person to remove it?

Tinybrother · 07/01/2024 22:21

Everyone removes their own brush head after use in our house, and cleans the handle. The handle is stored headless

none of this is a massive fuss or faff

It’s nothing like sharing towels.

For some people it is!

(We do share towels, sort of, in my house. I don't love it but it doesn't faze me overly but the toothbrush would).

It's all down to individual preference. But for the toothbrushes it's mainly the hassle & non-complying teens.

Tinybrother · 07/01/2024 22:22

You see I think sharing towels is grim. We all have our own things we can’t tolerate.

Doteycat · 07/01/2024 22:22

Handle is stored headless. We each have storage for our own heads.
That's the whole concept of them.
To share.

EffortlessDelegation · 07/01/2024 22:22

Wow, we are not a massively clean/organised house but DH and I have been sharing the handle ever since we moved in together and no problems, as soon as the DCs were old enough we added in heads for them and showed them how to take them off, rinse and put handle and head back. It is totally normal and automatic and no mess. The DCs never put the lid back on the toothpaste though.

Tiny that sounds ideal. But you keep repeating this. Can you not understand that not all households are the same? And not all DC will compliantly remove the head, ready for the next person?

CharlotteBog · 07/01/2024 22:23

One body and 2 heads. It gets a good rinse after each use. Me and teen DS. We are not unclean people.

Of course. I was replying to people saying “but doesn’t XYZ happen?” No, not in my house. I honestly don’t care whether other people have their own toothbrush handle or share in other houses. I don’t think it’s a big deal either way, people do what works for them.

It's getting slightly irritating. My DC are not exactly 'unclean'. They shower too much & observe personal hygiene. They generally do their bit around the house.

But they would need endless nagging to remove and store a toothbrush head; and clean the body of it. Not unclean, just a bit lazy & heedless about certain things.

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 07/01/2024 22:26

Used to share with DH - I think that was when they were a lot more expensive. Now we tend to use different bathrooms due to him getting up earlier than me, so makes sense to have our own. I don't like the idea of sharing so much any more 🤷‍♀️

Used to have a manual for when I was away but my latest one has a nice neat travel case.

EarringsandLipstick · 07/01/2024 22:27

@Tinybrother

Ah ok.

Yes, I'm in agreement. I had never known people did this! But if it works easily, then great. As you say, different households will have their own preferences.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 07/01/2024 22:30

I wouldn’t share tbh. On another note has anyone ever seen a charger that does multiple toothbrushes so you don’t have to remember to switch them over.

FortunataTagnips · 07/01/2024 22:31

Two heads and one handle for me and DP. We take the head off and clean the handle after using. It’s fine, and surely that’s what the manufacturer intended?

PollyOrange · 07/01/2024 22:33

Yikes. I'm not glad I asked now. Seems the consensus is nope to sharing. So now I'm getting 2 cheaper ones for the same price as the sharer one

In is just my husband and I at home. For some reason we have 3 toothbrushes between us. I think the 3rd one is just a spare in case either of us haven’t charged. I don’t see any problem with sharing the shank of the brush. We both always rinse the while brush after use. It is just we clean our teeth in different bathrooms.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 07/01/2024 22:47

The DCs never put the lid back on the toothpaste though.

This is why it’s pump toothpaste in my (adult🙄) kids’ bathroom! (Where they share a handle)
