Voting to 'Get the Tories Out'

1000 replies

DewHopper · 06/01/2024 09:55

Pro Labour posters are all over this platform telling posters to vote for whoever gets the Tories out. It does not seem to matter who it is as long as voting for them gets the Tories out nationally.

It's a worrying voting strategy from my pov but I tend to vote at constituency level. If I had an excellent Tory MP who cared about the things I cared about and served their constituents well, I would vote for them. Similarly Labour ( I would absolutely vote for Rosie Duffield) or Independent.

Do those people who will just vote for anyone as longs as this will oust the Tories - and what could be a very good MP - ever consider the effects of this locally? They may have got the Tories out at a national level but saddled themselves with a useless MP who does nothing for the locality.

Take for example women's rights. I am a gender critical woman and care very deeply about the erosion of women's single sex spaces etc. I am sure that many of the 'Tories out at all costs' people feel the same. The pro Labour people keep telling us that Starmer will be better for women's rights BUT if you vote on a single issue - getting the Tories out - you may well elect a hopeless constituency MP who is TWAW and who will be standing up to every pro woman move that Starmer makes. I worry that there will be a lot of these in the next parliament.

So should we be voting on the single issue - get the Tories out? I don't think so - AIBU?

I don’t think they’ll push on gender. I think Starmer is too canny re the right wing media to do that. Most folk are realistic that there’s no money left (pretty much like in 2010 😂). I’m hoping that there’ll be a bit more humanity rather than victim blaming, less corruption. Less dog whistle populism. Who knows. Some places really have nothing to lose by voting labour (which is ironic considering this was cited as a reason the left behind areas voted for Brexit and Johnson)..

They are now, belatedly, sending out some 'levelling up funds'.

They are giving levelling up funds to areas which are not in the bottom half of the needs table.

Ah ok. I suppose this is where the community chessboards came from too? I think I get my turn November 2025 Grin

Well, on a previous thread you seem to be concerned only with one issue, that of womens rights, now thats a very important issue BUT some people think another Tory Government will damage womens rights on a national level, our views don't seem to count, a well known GC poster on here suggested another to poster skip the thread, its not her fucking job to police MN or try and shut down opposing views.

The problem is a local MP who isn't in Government, has limited power, so your excellent Labour MP of the last 13 years hasn't really a lot of clout, a poorer quality Tory one has more.

On quality, why have soooo many Tory MPs had recall petitions or stood down before their time? Bone, Boris, Dorris etc etc ?

Edited

What’s with these cowardly insults 😂

But yes if you or others are moaning you are sick of the topic is it’s in the op. Or the ‘fucking op’ given how worked up you sound.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 06/01/2024 12:26

Even if my MP was a good local MP (he isn't), he still supports this absolute shit show of a government. Therefore his values don't align with mine, therefore I don't want him to represent me.

ChristmasinBurrRidge · 06/01/2024 10:43

It doesn't really matter what posters on here tell others to do - they have no influence whatsoever, so it falls on deaf ears. We saw similar approaches in the build up to previous elections with endless badgering and abuse, implying people are stupid etc - they're just wasting their time.

Abuse is bad, of course - but I often see someone accused of ‘badgering’ for presenting their viewpoint and arguing robustly for it. That’s what we need - open argument and people standing up for their principles (whether or not they align with our own).

EffieeBriest · 06/01/2024 12:26

@Cornettoninja our now tory council messed up the email to apply for levelling up funds. Missed it by a day. Now they are scuppered.

Lammy was misogynistic when he described women as rights hoarding dinosaurs

Not a good advert for Labour, but they broadly toe the line with him anyway. And if you don’t it’s Duffield treatment

Many can barely conceal hatred for women on SM and elsewhere - Osborne and Drakeford good examples

Yes my dinosaur necklace is in honour of him!

Idk we’ll probably find out. I just see Labour MPs hurling abuse at women or ‘terfs’ as they use the slur and that feels very much like hatred and division.

I'm so sick of the way some GC critical people on here are tying themselves in knots trying to justify voting tory when it's obvious another tory government will be disastrous for not only women's rights of everyone the entire country. The trans issue isn't the most pressing thing. Vote tory if you want because of it, but stop banging on about it to everyone else who doesn't want to vote on a single issue.

Absolutely this. I’m guessing none of them have been directly affected by the mess the tories have made, and seemingly don’t care about those that have.

newnamethanks · 06/01/2024 12:31

My single issue is to remove as many of the grasping chancers that populate the Tory party as possible. They have got to go while there's still a chance of restoring some of what they've trampled and burned. My Tory mp is a reasonable man compared to the dross at the top. Even he knows they've got to go. Liberals will take this seat. ASAP.

EasternStandard · 06/01/2024 11:39

We’ll have the similar at next GE, a whole load of Osborne and Butler types flinging abuse at women

I tend to swerve this debate for personal and political reasons but do feel it necessary to point out that these 'types' you mention are , in fact, both women themselves.

DewHopper · 06/01/2024 12:34

LightSwerve · 06/01/2024 12:03

Think this thread is very confused. The OP started with 'we shouldn't vote to get the Tories out nationally, we should vote for the best local MP' but actually the OP's main voting motivation seems to be a single national issue.

I think the actual position of the thread is the OP believes it is right for her to vote against Labour for national reasons, but it is wrong for others to vote against the Tories for national reasons.

I think I probably AM confused on this issue but, as I have said upthread, I will be voting on local issues and how good my local candidate is and they will probably be an Independent.

Either this or I shall spoil my ballot again.
And I don't appreciate the juvenile digs but you do you.

Of course. Posting anti women rhetoric aimed at ‘terfs’ is not solely the domain of men.

It’s not something I’ll ever align with, but it happens and will likely increase.

I would vote for anyone other than the Tories or Reform.
How anyone can vote to keep these fuckers in power a minute more is beyond me. If women's spaces mattered to them they would have done something about it in the last 14 years!!! They are using it as populist tool to win votes. If you can't see that there is no hope

This.

EffieeBriest · 06/01/2024 12:35

@EasternStandard I think a vocal minority of Labour politicians do this (but agree too many). Equally the lies about immigration coming from the government are worrying. Plus the corruption, populism.

DewHopper · 06/01/2024 12:36

Going back to the OP, why do assume people voting to get the Tories out are necessarily Labour supporters?

Good point - I think that I was swayed by another thread when it was the Labour voters telling everyone how to vote.

OP posts:
LightSwerve · 06/01/2024 12:37

I think the prospect of the Human Rights Act being repealed and the continuing threat of leaving the ECHR if the Tories get back in is a massive risk to women's rights, as it would leave women completely exposed to the whims of extreme groups, including those in the Tory party.

anniegun · 06/01/2024 12:38

Vote Tory and you get ministers like Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees Mogg. MPs like Andrew Rossindale can continue as an MP whilst on a rape charge. They can fill their boots with 2nd jobs and lobbying for private companies. And if they are really terrible they can be elevated to the Lords for life and continue to rule the peasants like us

You don't think you sound at all misogynist by referring to women you don't agree with as 'types'. Hmm. OK.

Well that seems to be the purpose of these sorts of threads: trash labour over trans, usually with a load of slurs and out right lies as that is what gets mentioned and bought up repeatedly into the thread very very quickly.

Ignoring the very simple fact the the Govt has stated publicly they wont change the GRA and are happy with it as it "strikes the right balance"

cardibach · 06/01/2024 12:41

DewHopper · 06/01/2024 11:37

No need to be patronising and I did mention cabinet posts as being most influential. If a 'dolt MP' has no say then why bother voting for anyone at all?

Because the party in control has a say, and you need to ensure that party will be saying sensible things. I get your concerns about women's rights, I really do, but as others have said women’s rights are also affected by the NHS, tax, education, care etc etc.

Its because individuals don’t get much say that voting for (or against) a party rather than for (or against) a specific local MP is more effective.

If I have misunderstood I apologise, but I thought you were voting on the issue of women's rights?

Are you actually saying you will vote on local issues - so car parks, pot holes, the ring road - and it doesn't matter about national issues like women's rights?

EasternStandard · 06/01/2024 12:42

Piggywaspushed · 06/01/2024 12:39

Anti women slurs and hatred is probably worse and even more troubling being a female MP in Labour is no barrier to it.

But if the post wasn’t up to exact wording no intention there

Soccermumamir · 06/01/2024 12:43

I will be voting Labour. I like Kier, but Angela Rayner is amazing!

I used women's rights as an example. I will only vote for a local candidate if they are pro-women as this obviously affects women and girls in my area. Otherwise I shall spoil my ballot.

I wish that I had not mentioned women's rights in my OP tbh as it seems to be so contentious on here for some reason. My main issue is that people voting for anyone without a blue rosette just to get the Tories out may not be the best way to pack our parliament with good, honest MPs.
