Voting to 'Get the Tories Out'

1000 replies

DewHopper · 06/01/2024 09:55

Pro Labour posters are all over this platform telling posters to vote for whoever gets the Tories out. It does not seem to matter who it is as long as voting for them gets the Tories out nationally.

It's a worrying voting strategy from my pov but I tend to vote at constituency level. If I had an excellent Tory MP who cared about the things I cared about and served their constituents well, I would vote for them. Similarly Labour ( I would absolutely vote for Rosie Duffield) or Independent.

Do those people who will just vote for anyone as longs as this will oust the Tories - and what could be a very good MP - ever consider the effects of this locally? They may have got the Tories out at a national level but saddled themselves with a useless MP who does nothing for the locality.

Take for example women's rights. I am a gender critical woman and care very deeply about the erosion of women's single sex spaces etc. I am sure that many of the 'Tories out at all costs' people feel the same. The pro Labour people keep telling us that Starmer will be better for women's rights BUT if you vote on a single issue - getting the Tories out - you may well elect a hopeless constituency MP who is TWAW and who will be standing up to every pro woman move that Starmer makes. I worry that there will be a lot of these in the next parliament.

So should we be voting on the single issue - get the Tories out? I don't think so - AIBU?

I haven’t seen any insults. Only one poster policing the thread, and trying to shut down discussion when it doesn’t go the way she wants.

Double? For couples? Or twin for people who don’t know each other?
Many unis have double rooms, yes. You apply for them as a couple.

From the UCL website

A twin room is shared by students of the same gender. A twin room is furnished with two single beds and furniture, such as a desk and wardrobe, for each student.

  • Twin (not en-suite) - A room for two single people, with two single-sized beds
  • Twin (not en-suite) (catered) - A room for two single people, with two single-sized beds (catered

Room/flat types

At UCL we offer many types of rooms and have defined them more clearly below.

Why are you yet again trying to shut down posters with your acerbic wit?

To me it looks like you often run out of argument.

Edited

No I’m serious why complain?

LadyWithLapdog · 06/01/2024 20:07

@EasternStandard bloody hell, that’s quite some gaslighting you’re doing. You are the bully on here, do you really not see it?!

Cornettoninja · 06/01/2024 20:08

@EasternStandard where have I policed or moaned? I’ve certainly pointed out your hypocrisies because you have policed and moaned. Repeatedly.

Bollocks

Posters moaning GC topic too prevalent

@cardibach I'm going to be off MN for a bit but I'm interested in an expansion of this, if you'd care to - e.g. why would standing up for women lead to a culture war any more than failing to do so, & why would the results be worse than the culture war which will probably happen on this issue? Will look for any answer later.

'I’d like them to up their game. I think they aren’t because their (professional and knowledgable) pollsters tell them it’s not going to make a blind bit of difference to the election result but could lead to huge culture war nonsense in the press which couldaffect the result.'

In the hope you are still around…
The Tories would leap on any statements about women’s rights/GRCs and their tame press would make a massive deal of it. They would suggest that any part of the policy which gave human rights (not rights to women’s space, rights to employment etc) to trans individuals were ‘woke’ and therefore terrible. They would misrepresent it as they do anything Labour says. They’d even call it transphobic if they could get away with it.
It’s an area that they’ve spun for culture war gain already (cf Black Lives Matter) - to divide people. To take advantage of division.

So it definitely could happen.

Nobody is piling on.
Women are giving their opinion. Don’t you like that?

No I enjoy the back and forth of opinion. One poster has pissed me off tbh but I'll get over it. 🙂

Exactly this, and there would be all sorts of flak from the Corbynistas as well, creating a huge distraction.

Its happening in unis in the USA where women are asked to share with men. Link below. A judge threw it out even though this person was visibly aroused around these young women.
The USA is down the rabbit hole on this, let's hope that UK universities are better on it but they still do allocate shared rooms (cheaper so this will affect poorer students) by gender not sex.

OK. Thanks. I hadn’t got round to checking. I’d agree that if they are assigned that could create issues. Are they assigned? Or is it an option a student has to choose/can refuse?
I agree with you that those sort of places are at risk from gender ideology, dependent on the ability of people to choose/refuse.

Desecratedcoconut · 06/01/2024 20:14

Still waiting for something resembling a labour policy that you can hang your hat on and demonstrate how they will make a material difference to the quality of life for women and girls...

What are you actually getting for handing in your truth badge?

Posters giving the opinion they’d sometimes like to discuss other aspects of politics? Yes, definitely I’ve seen that.
Moaning? Whingeing? Policing?
No. Giving opinions. You really don’t seem to like women giving opinions unless you agree with them.

I’ve just read that. It says nothing about sharing rooms.

Many universities are captured by trans ideology. Women are told on posters not to object to males in their spaces, and look at what has happened to prominent women who have been banned from speaking about women's rights in universities.

The girl in this scenario wouldn't be able to object until she arrives and is faced by a room with a male in it. Then she has to be 'a bigot' openly by objecting.

How is that right or fair?

Far better we address all of the issues by making spaces single sex.

Have a look at the website. Policies will come in the manifesto, but the 5 Missions will give you some clues.
They’ll make women’s lives better by focussing in things which improve everyday life, essentially. NHS, education, care, benefits etc etc.

I didn’t immediately cotton on that’s what your comment was in context of, no.
