Voting to 'Get the Tories Out'

1000 replies

DewHopper · 06/01/2024 09:55

Pro Labour posters are all over this platform telling posters to vote for whoever gets the Tories out. It does not seem to matter who it is as long as voting for them gets the Tories out nationally.

It's a worrying voting strategy from my pov but I tend to vote at constituency level. If I had an excellent Tory MP who cared about the things I cared about and served their constituents well, I would vote for them. Similarly Labour ( I would absolutely vote for Rosie Duffield) or Independent.

Do those people who will just vote for anyone as longs as this will oust the Tories - and what could be a very good MP - ever consider the effects of this locally? They may have got the Tories out at a national level but saddled themselves with a useless MP who does nothing for the locality.

Take for example women's rights. I am a gender critical woman and care very deeply about the erosion of women's single sex spaces etc. I am sure that many of the 'Tories out at all costs' people feel the same. The pro Labour people keep telling us that Starmer will be better for women's rights BUT if you vote on a single issue - getting the Tories out - you may well elect a hopeless constituency MP who is TWAW and who will be standing up to every pro woman move that Starmer makes. I worry that there will be a lot of these in the next parliament.

So should we be voting on the single issue - get the Tories out? I don't think so - AIBU?

I agree. It is shameful that women are being asked to turn a blind eye to this because the Tory party is worse.

Change doesn't happen when backs are turned and eyes are closed.

The Labour Party needs to work to earn back the trust of women who they want to vote for them. Or perhaps, and they have already indicated this to a degree, they don't really want our votes?

Women's rights to single sex spaces and sports are too important to be ignored. We owe it to the women of this country to make sure that the Left does the right thing by women.

Shutting up 'for the greater good' is unpalatable to me.

Do you mean single sex spaces like toilets?

It's certainly possible but from what I have seen both on such debates and in real life, it's sadly not the norm.

Is it possible the stream of scandals that occurred under the previous Prime Minister, none of which were apparently serious enough for Sunak do to anything about, and the larger number since Sunak has been PM are an indication of how the government is being run?

Single sex toilets are essential for some women to function properly in society, especially women of religious minority, or don't they matter so much? My autistic daughter struggles with mixed sex toilets, should I keep her home in case a male wants to use one at the same time?

But not just toilets, women are struggling to gain access to single sex rape crisis which is essential for victims of domestic violence. Then there are prisons, refuges, toilets & changing rooms in schools (girls refusing to drink at school is not great!), dormitories, double rooms in university halls, intimate care for disabled and elderly. This list is not exhaustive.

Lets consider the following scenario.

My partner is out with one of our dc when they were in nappies. The baby changing facilities are in the female toilets.

Should he a) use the facilities b) change dc in the corridor c) not change them or d) something else I haven't thought of?

I'm so sick of the way some GC critical people on here are tying themselves in knots trying to justify voting tory when it's obvious another tory government will be disastrous for not only women's rights of everyone the entire country. The trans issue isn't the most pressing thing. Vote tory if you want because of it, but stop banging on about it to everyone else who doesn't want to vote on a single issue.

💯 this. Reminds me of the single issue
voters in America.

Do you not care at all?

Ie you’re ok with males in female sports and spaces

LadyWithLapdog · 06/01/2024 18:44

Local toilets have all been shut down or turned into cafés, so a moot point in many cases.

Two theatres I went to recently had F/mixed (that 3 way symbol) and M/mixed. Everyone kept to their sex and didn’t abuse it.

I don’t want M in F toilets but under the Tories this is what we can get.

I'm certainly no Tory supporter but the reality is that things won't be that different under Labour. There basically isn't any money available with debt, interest payments and taxation all at record highs.

Every time there is an election coming up the popular cry is to vote for the opposition on the grounds "well they can't be any worse than the Government we've got" and every time they do prove to be worse through further increasing debt, interest payments and taxation.

Unfortunately in a democracy where there is a choice between Candidate A that promises to increase spending but that will mean increased taxation and Candidate B who promises to increase spending but not raise taxation by insert BS reason of cutting waste, closing loopholes, growing the economy etc. Every time voters go for Candidate B who becomes the politician. Then when they either don't increase spending or do increase taxes they get accused of being a lying politician.

The only reason politicians lie is because if they told the truth they would never get elected. So who is to blame here the voters or the politicians?

On the contrary, things will be different from the very start.

Vote PM Sunak's Tory party, get the chaos of yet another Tory leadership contest. The same rats fighting in the same sack.🙄 Something the country can't afford. Vote someone else, even Labour under Starmer and get a stable government ready to govern.

Well that is easily changed isn't it? Make sure the men's toilets all have baby changing facilities. Most do these days.

I have never, and I am the parent of two children, seen a man use the women's toilets to change a baby.

I have seen other males in women's toilets without babies.

lifeturnsonadime · 06/01/2024 18:52

And @jgw1 what about my other examples are you going to ignore those in favour of what you perceive the 'soft option' which is toilets?

Why should women have to be second class citizen's under a 'progressive' Labour Government who have not, despite suggestions on this thread, made clear representations that they will make changes to ensure women do not have to encounter males where they should not be?

We must have read two different links.

The 7 declarations were about lost rights now, rights lost under a Tory Govt.

They are calling for Labour to reinstate these rights, thats not quite how you re framing it....

2 of the 7 refer to gender sex based rights ie safe spaces/sport (hope i ve worded that correctly)

However on Karen Ingala Smith, i read the tweets that apparently got her app refused, i don't agree, she should have been accepted, at first glance, doesn't seem too controversial.

Do you know if she re applied?

Yes and she was accepted last year. She writes about it rather eloquently below:

Nevertheless, I persisted

Why I still wanted to be in the Labour Party I left Labour in a fit of pique in 2018 when the then General secretary, Jennie Formby, announced that all-women-shortlists would no longer be women onl…

There is a sign up when male attendants are present so women can choose not to go in.

I am not talking about attendants.

Why are you focusing on toilets Blossomtoes, what about my other examples?

Piggywaspushed · 06/01/2024 18:54

Where are these mixed sex shared rooms at universities of which you speak? Other than ones designated for couples.

I did write to the person responsible for the situation at the time, a chap by the name of J. Hunt (wonder what happened to him) but it appeared that he was too busy to reply. 11 years on the situation hasn't changed, so clearly it is not as easy to change as you suggest.

I have noticed a trend for their to be a general notice at the entrance to toilets saying that they may be cleaned by a male or female attendant, that is there permantly.
So how would one know at any given moment whether they were in the toilet area or not?

What should one do in that situation?

This could happen because a student can declare himself female and end up sharing a room with an actual female. If she complained she would be labelled a transphobe.
I think it may be more of an issue in the States than here.

Some universities offer double rooms which are cheaper than single. They are based on the 'gender' of the people who apply for them. So a teen girl could apply for a double room and find a trans woman is sharing. If that trans woman is legally female through the GRC then I'm not clear what she can do about it, I'm not clear either way as it is not possible for service providers to ask for copies of a GRC.

I haven’t seen males using baby change either, there’s always a separate room

lifeturnsonadime · 06/01/2024 19:01

So if I get @jgw1 right, because males clean toilets we should allow all males in toilets and never have single sex toilets?

How is that fair to women of religious minorities, or don't they matter so much?
