They’ve got the stop the boats lecturn out.

Haven't they stopped them yet, what have they been doing?

jgw1 · 18/01/2024 11:24

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/01/2024 10:31

I think it was the last sentence of the speech. ‘It’s time we stop the boats and start the flights.’

Did he say flights or fights?

They think Rwanda will win them the election. They think it will help them retain the red wall. Short of awarding everyone in the UK a million pounds or an alien invasion or something, nothing will win them the election. Just call one now and stop wasting everyone's time and money ( and save my blood pressure).🤬🤬🤬

Agree, even if a flight to Rwanda takes off I can't see them winning an election.

But I don't think they are expecting to win an election or they'd have more sensible long term policies - they are worried about individual seats now and who will be left after this shit show is over to choose & elect the next leader.

So this was Sunak basically having a go at the unelected HoL, remind us again who is his home secretary

I understand that at least one political party will have the abolition of the HoLs in their manifesto, presumably Sunak wishes to encourage us to vote for that party.

jgw1 · 18/01/2024 11:29

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2024 10:57

He is refusing to give a date for the first flight, can't even say if it will be before the election.

I can, exclusively reveal to you the date of the first flight:

DuncinToffee · 18/01/2024 11:30

Yes Sunak having a go at the HoL after he approved Johnson and Truss' dishonour lists is a bit rich, to say the least.

Perhaps when he had to approve those lists it dawned on him how bad the HoLs is, it is quite clear he is campaigning for its abolition.

Exclusive

Sir Robert Chote, chair of the UK Statistics Authority, has slammed Rishi Sunak for his claim earlier this month to have “cleared” the asylum backlog

Chote says voters may have been “misled” and Sunak’s untrue claim “may affect public trust”

Sir Robert Chote says the average member of the public would assume from Sunak’s claim to have “cleared” the asylum backlog that the whole backlog had been cleared

Chote: “not surprised that the government’s claim has been treated with scepticism and some people may feel misled”

This is the second time in two months that Sunak has been censured by the statistics watchdog for untrue claims

Apart from anything else, why would you risk breaking the law for a government who will be in power for a matter of months by the time the bill is passed

which I would support cs with but we all know exactly how the government for now will spin that and paint them as the unimaginable force of power standing in their way of being boundlessly vile.

AdamRyan · 18/01/2024 11:53

The thing is this government are so unreliable that few people withh be surprised or care that he misreported statistics. Its just entirely par for the course.

That press conference has truly turned my stomach, are we meant to be impressed he won the vote? And the spineless "rebels", full of hot air.

I don't think I've ever felt so powerless as a citizen in my entire life. They are destroying the country, abandoning rules and the law and there is nothing we appear to be able to do to get rid of them.

One of my CS friends pointed out they aren't immune to prosecution for breaking the law.
So this government is effectively asking civil servants to risk a criminal record in the course of their jobs.
If they ignore the block on deportation and a returnee is harmed, would the civil servant face prosecution for that? Could the CS be held responsible for something like "corporate manslaughter"?

It's a horrendous position for the government to put civil servants in and shows a complete lack of respect for the UK unwritten constitution. I don't know what the CS can/will do about it though. I hope they strike hard. Or similar.

Left wing civil servants going to join left wing lawyers I expect.

Given the latest yougov poll about U50s, they may be correct that civil servants and lawyers are to the left of them. But then so is most of the country.

countrygirl99 · 18/01/2024 12:01

There could be some interesting employment tribunals if the government expect CS to break the law. Either constructive dismissal if people resign on principle or are sacked for not doing so.

I imagine they'd pay off any claimant and insist on a NDA.

I thought Sunak said that NDAs shouldn't be used to cover up lawbreaking?
Or was that yesterday so forgotten by today?

Notonthestairs · 18/01/2024 12:32

Other people's law breaking. Not his. Keep up.

Sorry with all the flipflopping he does it is quite hard for me to keep up.

So what do we think, will there be more Starmer threads popping up soon or will there a different tactic be deployed?

Cornettoninja · 18/01/2024 13:19

Aditya Chakrabortty from the guardian has just been on Shelagh Fogarty and superbly summed up my views on this government. A bunch of talentless nomarks desperate to impress the bigger, cooler boys.

I like him.

Nah. This is what they know, there will just be a harder push on it.

They didn’t come up with this tactic and don’t have the intelligence or talent to come up with anything new. Probably why Rishi was reported to be talking to Cummings. He’s likely played his one trick by now though, it’s hackneyed now.

Saucery · 18/01/2024 13:23

I think we're overdue a But Angela Rayner thread, aren't we?

Piggywaspushed · 18/01/2024 13:31

I suspect But Welsh Labour incoming .

Zonder · 18/01/2024 14:13

I think this all may be starting to get to me. I just tried to turn my smart speaker off by saying "OK government stop now". Bizarrely my Google home took no notice and kept playing.

L1ttledrummergirl · 18/01/2024 14:19

I woke up again this morning from a dream where some fool had brought Sunak into my workplace and I had the opportunity to tell him what I think of his policies, cabinet and behaviour.

Every time I got fired (in the dream).

Everything is making me very cross today so I am really pleased I haven't yet seen the press conference- it might tip me over the edge.

Politics shouldn't be this hard to live with.
