My parents were in the Caribbean once and Jeremy Clarkson came in to a restaurant with his girlfriend and a couple of other famous people. My parents expected him to be very loud and rude but said he wasn’t at all and spent a lot of time chatting with the chef and the staff and was really friendly and nice. They said lots of people stopped by his table and he was pleasant to all of them.

I was on a flight with Jimmy Carr once and at baggage he was talking loudly so people would look at him. I determinedly didn’t look at him.

He was in my year at school and was awful. Condescending, patronising bully. Completely up himself then. The type that makes fun of people but if you say anything he turns it round onto you. I have never watched a single programme he’s been in! Vile man.

MoneyMoneyMoneyy · 05/01/2024 20:47

A family member has had contact with Clive Myrie through work. Said he’s an arrogant arsehole

MoneyMoneyMoneyy · 05/01/2024 20:53

@Doseofreality 🤣. Did NOT see that coming! Can you elaborate further, please? 🤣🤣😮‍💨

Met Gordon Ramsay - I was a waitress in a restaurant and he had come in for dinner. He was very polite, charming and went into the kitchen to thank the chefs afterwards.
Not met but was out one night in a private members club and Holly Willoughby, Keith lemon, Emma bunton & her DH, paddy mcguiness, and Nicole Appleton were there as a group, they seemed very drunk and like they were having a great time, and it was the night Paddy and Nicole were papped going into a hotel together. Wasn't hugely surprising as they'd been very touchy feely that evening.

God, I love Ruth Jones. Nessa is iconic and her books are great too. too much talent, that woman.

She really was so normal, really not into a showbiz sort of lifestyle.

I honestly honestly believe that we could be really good friends. But it might be a bit one sided 😉

tinmrn · 05/01/2024 21:28

Tamzin outhwaite through work... was nice but with a definite undertone of bitch - belittled me subtly throughout the day. Always comes across as lovely on her social media posts though so maybe she was having a bad day/ just didn't like me! Numerous others through work too- Girls Aloud back in the day .. Cheryl & Sarah (rip) lovely, chatty, open.. Nadine- insanely vain; Kimberley - meh & Nicola- very aloof

DragonMama3 · 05/01/2024 21:33

Hull Uni 2001 - a royal who's in the news...

Simonjt · 05/01/2024 21:38

I nearly married one, he was lovely then and still is, so most people I’ve met have been through him.

Kylie, very nice, very patient and taught our son a dance, she remembered him the second time she met him.

Elton John, again very nice, fantastic manner with children and very funny.

Judy Dench, told me off for having odd socks! (In a jokey way)

Beverley Knight, huge huge diva, we were specifically told we weren’t to speak to her or even make eye contact.

I work in an industry where I've met quite a few and had to work with them. Paxman called me"deranged" after I showed him a picture of my chihuahua when we were talking about dogs 😅 Woody Harrellson was very moody and unhappy and surprisingly very short???? Internet says he's 5'10 but I was towering over him...

Malala was very timid but very respectful, I suppose to be expected. Tim Berners-Lee was just awesome.

The CNO of the Navy I expected to be scary but was absolutely delightful and very nervous.

Spent some time with Stephen Hawking and he was absolutely hilarious. That's probably the one that surprised me the most because he was such a admired academic i expected him to be boring. But then after I remembered he had done big bang theory, simpsons etc so kind of made sense that he knew how to have a laugh.

Hannah Fry was my favourite. I work in a male dominated industry and am used to getting ignored but one job I worked when she arrived she walked straight in and introduced herself to me first and it absolutely blew me away. I was so used to being ignored because I'm a woman!

I'm sure I could name many more but those are the ones that immediately come to me. I don't work that job any more sadly.

Maybe it's just me, but to be considered a 'celebrity' someone should be both well-known to the general public AND hard to meet in the 'wild'.
So Mark Zuckerberg, but not Tim Berners Lee.
Anybody can meet Hannah Fry (and could have met Stephen H) on campus. In their offices.

I'm a massive geek, would've loved to meet Tim BL and shared my thoughts on TLS 1.2 but erm... I don't think most people know who he is. Or can even fathom that humans were responsible for the invention of the WWW, instead of it being a natural resource somewhat like water... especially the younger generation.

DragonMama3 · 05/01/2024 21:41

Tim Berners-Lee's bro and niece live near us. She taught herself GCSE Chinese and got full marks. That family is clever and then some...

Philip Schofield - he was very very orange in real life

Philip Schofield - he was very very orange in real life

Before or after his spectacular fall from grace?

MargaretThursday · 05/01/2024 21:51

No major one.
We had someone who was known "back in the day" at our church from a long running TV show. My parents were very excited when I told them, but I hadn't really heard of him, although after I'd got to know him I spotted him in a few things. He was absolutely lovely though all the time.
I remember one time when dd1 was doing a school project about the local area and they'd been told to ask a couple of questions from "someone known in the local community". She'd emailed all sorts of people (they weren't long answers needed) and none got back to her. He did a lot of charity work, and someone (not from church) suggested him, so she tried emailing and he came straight back that night with not only the answers but he'd asked a couple of other people (one of whom had already not replied) and sent some photos and other helpful things. This was when we'd only just joined the (large) church so he wouldn't have known us at all.

Dd2's met Ceri Burnell (CBeeBies) a few times because she's missing her hand like her (and been on TV with her too). She's again a lovely person and really engages with the children. The first time she met her, dd2 was terrified of the boom mike and Ceri just sat and chatted to her until she was happy to go on.
We didn't see her for about 3-4 years after that, and met her at something totally different and she not only remembered dd2's name, but also dd1 and ds who had been there, but not involved.

Holly W-definitely not what I was expecting

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 05/01/2024 21:53

What’s wrong with Joe Wicks?!

MoreStressMoreShit · 05/01/2024 21:56

Michael Jackson would regularly come to my house in secret (smuggled in by his bodyguards) after his Dangerous Tour performances. My house was one of the only places he would be able to relax and shut off from the world. He was kind, funny and interesting and just as humble as he always appeared to be during interviews. We would listen to music, eat crisps and talk about life. We always kept in touch when he went back to Neverland and he always wrote me thoughtful letters and flew me over there for the summer. He was a great friend.

Oh - and then I woke up and realised it was all a dream 😄

I did however once see Bradley Walsh at an event years ago but his eyes just kind of brushed past mine. It was during his Coronation Street days. Also saw Alison Hammond in Butlins years ago and again a few years later in Birmingham.

Holly W-definitely not what I was expecting

In what way?

2under2in2024 · 05/01/2024 22:05

@MaggieNextDoor well before, I think would have been the summer of 2007/2008

Listentogold · 05/01/2024 22:10

A couple of years ago Sue Pollard was doing panto in our town.
She stayed in a Premier inn.
Me and Dh were taking our dog for a walk and she was wandering around the area. She stopped us for a chat what a lovely lady batty but so friendly and lovely.

Wishitwouldsnowsomuch · 05/01/2024 22:11

@MoreStressMoreShit It was around six years ago, I just really thought she’d be like she is on tv (naively!) She really wasn’t sadly.

Iknowtheyareusefulstorage · 05/01/2024 22:11

My Ex DH had a pint with Aidan Turner when he was filming Poldark - he was working in the area and started chatting to him at the bar of the pub he was in. He had absolutely no idea who he was, but we pieced it together when he was back and talking about some actor guy - showed him a picture and he was all 'Oh yeah, that's him, nice bloke!'.
He also sat at a table next to Kirstie Allsop when she was having dinner with a friend, and she jokingly threatened to nick some of his pudding!

(Personally nothing so interesting, just swimmers of the 80s -David Wilkie, Sharon Hughes, Sarah Hardcastle etc - all lovely - and Louis Theroux's brother (Marcel), very pleasant. )

Ruth Jones is a friend of a friend and she joined our virtual book group during lockdown. She was absolutely lovely, really down to earth.

I told her a scandalous story from my family history, she laughed a lot and I've wondered if I'll ever see it rewritten by her for tv!

She runs a cafe/restaurant in the highlands now, and is warm and welcoming and lovely. Speaks not too bad high school French to the occasional tourist customers, too! Seems and all round good soul.

Mrs86 · 05/01/2024 22:34

I don't know many ppl who know him, but Immortal technique. After going to his gig I asked for a tshirt to be signed at the end and he addressed me as 'queen' with a lovely genuine smile. He was lovely but looked so small in real life. I loved his music even more after this. He even posed for a pic with me. Krs 1 and Loki also attended this concert if anyone knows them. Didn't get to meet them though.

Lupe fiasco concert last year (I think). He spoke to me whilst on stage, pointed at me and asked something and I can't remember what it was about. I was sooo shy and got really embarrassed and hid behind another girl in the crowd! But I was equally flattered! Super talented and intelligent. He seemed very nice and down to earth.

I also met Jamie carragher years ago. We're LFC fans and he just so happened to be signing a book he'd written with someone in WHSmith (I think at Liverpool 1). It was so random because we just got in the car that morning and drove to wherever we ended up! He was really nice but I found him to be quite shy and even though he was sat down I thought, ooh he's tall. Me and hubby were obviously starstruck, I didn't get past hi, how you doing and we're gonna look at your book in bed 😂 hubby who is a mahoosiv Liverpool fan couldn't do anything but grin.

Another Su Pollard spotter here. Can confirm she was exactly as she appears on TV. She was being rushed through an airport late for her flight by a very patient airline rep and stopped to chat animatedly and at length with almost everyone en route.

I dealt with Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in a work capacity at the height of their fame. Very relaxed and unstarry.
Rick Astley, just radiated loveliness. Self deprecating and really funny.
Gabrielle Glaister(Patricia from Brookside, also Bob in Blackadder). Beautiful and very polite. Remembered and acknowledged us when she bumped into us a second time.
Some celebrities give off a sort of aura. I don’t know if it’s money/grooming or just plain charisma, but I was at a gig with DD and this guy was walking round on his own beforehand and he just looked like a big deal. Apparently he was the singer in another indie band.
Anne Charleston (Madge from Neighbours); ridiculously well spoken and seemed surprised to be recognised.
