Anyone actually excited about a Keir / Labour govt?

roarrfeckingroar · 04/01/2024 17:37

I'm typically a Tory voter (one nation Conservative, just right of centre, nothing radical) and gender critical, so I'm wary of a Labour government. I worry they'll leave the country worse than it is now.

However, I absolutely agree we need a change. Things can't get much worse, can they? Idiots like Boris and Truss have made a mockery of what I understand of the Conservatives - namely economic competence - and I can't vote for them this time. I don't know who I will vote for.

Listening to LBC this evening, I hear a Labour MP talk about how Starmer is offering an "exciting programme" of change and I just don't buy it. Maybe he will he better, maybe he won't, but my real question is is anyone genuinely excited about Labour, or just looking forward to the back of the Tories?

I think they could lose on the gender issues. I don’t why any woman would vote for them. Poor Rosie!

I very much doubt whether the majority of the electorate really consider gender issues a priority.

Starmer has to be a better prospect than what we've had for the last few years - surely?

I wish I could agree. I find him
wooden, uninspiring and weak.

No matter what you think of Labour, there's too much of a mess to sort out in a few years, they'll get the blame for not sorting it out, and lose the next election before they've had chance to fix much 🤷🏼‍♀️

That’s why Starmer’s already talking about a decade in power.

Can I ask your thoughts about the top 4 countries in the world for women's parity with men on the 4 key dimensions of Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment, and their introduction of more relaxed gender self-ID policies?

I’ll answer. Most western democracies have embraced gender ideology, unfortunately for women and girls.

They would still be performing as they do without disadvantaging this sex class. TRAs are not for women, nor are captured institutions.

Would you prefer women just say ok to gender ideology and TRAs

Why shouldn’t women speak up to protect those sex based rights?

LightSwerve · 04/01/2024 19:08

I'm keen to have a change of government and some parliamentary norms re-established, yes.

I don't need to like the PM personally, if we have a chance of functional government I am looking forward to it.

youngones1 · 04/01/2024 19:09

Starmer seems so dull and lifeless, he really doesn't seem to have any passion or ideas.

Rather presumptuous

Watch his speech today. He sounded like a grown up. He’s got plenty of ideas.

newnamethanks · 04/01/2024 19:12

Both, thanks for asking.

mamacorn1 · 04/01/2024 19:12

Oh god no. It’s either terrible Tory’s or crap labour. What a choice?!
for the first time ever I’m not voting.

youngones1 · 04/01/2024 19:13

@BIossomtoes I watched his speech, I almost fell asleep, it was so boring and predictable.

Would you like for example a politican who had a successful career as a lawyer and lead a major organisation such as the Crown Prosecution Service?

Whilst the current shower are a complete shit show, let’s not forget that last year Sir Keir was very happy to reintroduce the pension Lifetime allowance for other people so they could pay more tax, whilst accepting his own unfunded exempt pension entitlement.

Until whoops. It was published in the Telegraph then suddenly he had to backpedal confirming that he wasn’t intending to avoid the tax after all.

Danikm151 · 04/01/2024 19:15

It’s annoying because you essentially have a choice of 2 parties. Your vote will be wasted otherwise.

in the past I would have been excited for Labour but all they will be able to do is put plasters over the damage the Tories have caused.

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2024 19:16

After Starmers speech today I'm very much looking forward to a Starmer government.

An adult who can understand the questions being asked and not only actually answer a question - but answer it well.

What a novelty.

I'm also a centrist voter and he inspires more confidence in me we can have a grown up who can lead our country out of this mess every time he speaks.

youngones1 · 04/01/2024 19:16

Lawyers are good at good at processing and procedure but don't necessarily make great leaders.

2dogsandabudgie · 04/01/2024 19:17

Jgw1 - That isn't what the law says. The law cannot change a person's biological sex.

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2024 19:17

Rainydaze79 · 04/01/2024 17:41

Definitely not. I would not vote Labour right now (or for the foreseeable future). They don't seem to have any credible plans and they hate women.

That said, I don't want another Conservative government. I feel genuinely stuck. My Labour voting friends are definitely not enthusiastic about the party in its current state.

Yeah and the Tory's loving woman so much they rape and drug them is really what I'd like my government to stand for 🙄

Really? He was woeful on the single sex space answer. Absolute deflection and avoidance

Why do you think that the counties with consistently exceptional track records for women's parity with men over the years, far exceeding the UK's performance in this regard, are suddenly making bad decisions that will adversely impact them now?

The countries that do best for women also tend to be those that do best for their LGBT populations.

Sublime66 · 04/01/2024 19:18

both parties are a disaster and are not interested in what you want!

SunflowerSeeds123 · 04/01/2024 19:20

John Major was colourless and he did ok. Keir is just as dull. We've had characters like Boris, maybe boring is just what the country needs.

Easy - because TRAs have captured many institutions and it’s incredibly hard to reverse.

Although small glimmer of light I see NZ has started reversing some damaging policies. It’ll take time though, it’s incredibly hard to do especially if a country is tied up in international captured institutions.

HoLs will hopefully happen in the next parliament.
That is surely something we can all be excited about for the next government.

Edited

The HoLs is a very useful balance- they don’t need to acquiesce to whatever is being pushed in the media or keep any big corporations on side. Also see the amount of work that a lot of HoL members do for charities etc.

Removing the HoL would be detrimental to the UK.

Edit to add- and don’t forget the HoL has members from Labour, Lib Dem etc

Desecratedcoconut · 04/01/2024 19:22

It's going to be exciting to see all these policies that Keir has been hiding - all these super-great ideas he can't tell anyone about in case someone in the Tory party hasn't thought of them and might nick them. Although we already know they aren't going to change anything that they vehemently objected to because of their dire consequences on children and the vulnerable, like the two child policy and bedroom tax, nor will they be increasing benefits for the disabled, but never fear they are going to be the party for the worker...so, watch this space.

And besides, I thought The Handmaid's Tale was really exciting too.

Fleetheart · 04/01/2024 19:22

well nothing is going to change immediately but of course it’s a much better option. Keir Starmer is sensible. Full stop. Not like this moronic self serving bunch.
