Words you cannot bear to read or speak or hear

squinker45 · 03/01/2024 11:03

I cannot bear to read or speak or hear some food related words. It is difficult for me to write them as I feel so ick about them but here goes:

Tasty
Delicious
Sweet treats (or just treats)
Snack
Yum
Nom
That slurpy face emoji (I refuse to put it here)

Uuuuuuurgh I feel ill now

What is wrong with me? Anyone else or am I a massive weirdo?

OP posts:

Thumbelina snuggled her scrummy baby and tickled its tummy while her denim-wearing hubby chose a piece of apricot from the picky bits on the cheeseboard.

hogmanayhoolie · 03/01/2024 11:32

Yummy, tummy, snuggly, cozy/cosy

Any word that shouldn't be used by anyone over the age of 3

I remember some years ago a poster described her car's engine trouble as her car having a "poorly tummy" which I think was meant to sound cutesy.

DRS1970 · 03/01/2024 11:33

Flange. I have an engineering background and but still a little piece of me cringes when I hear it.

MY BRAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😂

Gotten

If it's in a post here I don't read any further.

Stresa22 · 03/01/2024 11:33

Milk coma. 🤢🤢

CharliesAngles · 03/01/2024 11:34

Also ‘boobies’ or ‘boob fed’.

I can't even bear to write it, an infantile word for stomach.

What annoys me is that it's not even the stomach that's being referred to, it's the abdomen containing the colon.

AffIt · 03/01/2024 11:34

I LOATHE the word 'tasty': it actually gives me the rage to hear people use it (and yes, I am very aware that it is a 'me' problem).

Agree with PPs about the common misuse of words such as decimation, obligate etc.

Greeksummer · 03/01/2024 11:35

Scrumptious, sumptuous and “delish” make me feel bilious.

Oh now there's a word I love. Very happy it's coming back into use after centuries of absence!

I also hate panties
But worst for all for me is Fanny. I hate it. Hate to hear it, hate to read it and would never ever say it myself!!!

Be careful if you visit parts of Scotland then:

  • fanny - idiot, vagina, pejorative ("He's a wee fanny.")
  • fannybaws - a term of ridicule, in some cases of endearment ("Ho, here fannybaws, geis a chip.")

Also the USA, because it means "bottom" there so you get people talking about sitting on their fannies all day!

BingoMarieHeeler · 03/01/2024 11:36

‘Picky bits’ ‘picky tea’ ‘pickings’ 🤢🤢🤢 gross and smug, can’t think of anything more unappetising!

Also ‘all the trimmings’ 😤 fuck off!

Stresa22 · 03/01/2024 11:37

“Vanishingly small” as though they’re trying to sound authoritative.

  • Some of the most hated words in the English language are:
  • Moist: Slightly or moderately wet.
  • Flap: A movement or sound of something flapping, or a thin, flat piece of something.
  • Whatever: Used to show that one does not care or is indifferent.
  • Dude: A man; a guy.
  • Like: Used to indicate similarity, preference, or filler speech.
  • Literally: In a literal manner or sense; exactly.
  • Flaccid: Soft and hanging loosely or limply.
  • Panties: Women's or girls' underpants.

Jammies. Ugh

There was even a "jarmies" last week.

Any Mumma Bear, yummy yum, horrid sort of worst my teeth on edge

I also hate jobsworth. I judge the person using it, not the person doing their job

HelpMeGetThrough · 03/01/2024 11:42

Supper, when people mean they are having their tea.

"We had a light supper."

Snobby twats.

HeraSyndulla · 03/01/2024 11:43

Flaccid is bad, in every sense.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 03/01/2024 11:43

Abra1t · 03/01/2024 11:44

Icky

Prodel · 03/01/2024 11:44

squinker45 · 03/01/2024 11:23

@Prodel sorry I can't tell what is meant by that? Think - France castle mouse seems to be four totally unrelated words?

The poster was trying to avoid saying Disneyland Paris. No idea why they didn't just say it! People will use it to sometimes avoid giving away revealing info eg instead of saying their child's name, they might say "Think top ten name"

Depends doesn’t it? My grandparents were the most working class un-snobby folk ever but they loved their fish suppers from the chippy.

TheTecknician · 03/01/2024 11:45

@squinker45 Yes.
