Where can I find a cowboy?

CalFran · 01/01/2024 22:45

He'd have to be a fairly mature one since I am fairly mature myself (age wise that is). And I'm slightly scared of horses but I guess there will be occasions when the horse isn't present.

So where do I look?

I love that everyone is so helpful!

@smokingcarriageonly is Dustin a fictional character in a tv show then? I was very excited on your behalf for a minute there.

@WildFlowerBees where did you find your cowboy? I can overlook sub par performance in the bedroom at my age.

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername you haven't seen what I can do with a digestive biscuit ... :)

Does your dh have any recommendations as to where I should hang out @SeaToSki ? Or better yet, any single cowboy friends?

@Whiskerson and @PremiumPork it's precisely because of a wasted youth that I'm now on the hunt for a cowboy!

You don't need to go that far to find cowboys. Western Reining (on quarterhorses) is a big sport in Europe, and there are events held there every year. Just found this one.

https://www.quarterhorsenews.com/2023/12/100x-shows-schedules-french-show-days-before-the-summer-olympics/

reining cowboys are a lot classier (and usually wealthier) than regular cowboys. And a lot of them have partners who don't ride horses at all.

100x Shows Schedules French show to be days before the Summer Olympics - Quarter Horse News

“To put on a reining show 45 minutes from Paris just days before the Summer Olympics is an amazing opportunity."

This thread is a good example of being made to want something you don't want (I mean me). You know like when you see something very cute (massive cuddly toy otter with the cutest face) or something ultra gadgety and think I REALLY WANT THAT but then realise you don't actually want it for rational reasons.

This thread has made me WANT TO FIND A COWBOY. Except I don't because they are probably very smelly and don't wash much being out cowboying for days finding the lost cattle. have dirty broken finger nails and rough calloused hands. terrible dress sense. wear boots that are no doubt very, very, very, very stinky. probably not very educated, and unshaven. Proabably only talk about cattle, horses and broken fence posts.

I don't really want one but feel like I do and want to go on some cowboy holidays now.

CalFran · 03/01/2024 15:01

@ScienceDragon ooh this is very interesting news, thank you. I will investigate.

@NotAClueZ no, you DO really want one, you do!

They won't be smelly or have dirty nails, they'll be washing in cold rivers all the time. Rough callused hands are actually a plus point, one that hadn't occurred to me before your post, but the thought of which are now making me more determined than ever to find a cowboy <fans self>.

And you know, there's a lot more to education than a-levels or degrees. I am absolutely convinced there are many things I can learn from my (so far elusive) cowboy.

I'm going to Texas for 10 days in June. I'll bring you a cowboy back in my suitcase @CalFran if I can find one to kidnap.

Not sure my chances are great though as last time I went to Texas, the only cowboy I saw was at the airport on my way home. I also had my (male) boss (of only 4 days - it was my first week in a new job) stalking the airport for cowboys for me - we were flying from different terminals - and he sent me a photo of the cowboy he saw. It was the same damn one!! All I can assume is that the airport at Houston has only one cowboy on duty at all times who roams the airport allowing stalkers to sneakily take his photo.

I'm hoping for better things in Austin / San Antonio / Hill Country. Houston was rubbish for cowboys.

NotAClueZ · 03/01/2024 15:18

@HundredMilesAnHour I've been to San Antonio and can tell you it mostly full of tourists. It's quite a bizarre place with its fake river. I saw no cowboys. I did see the Alamo which is smaller than you'd think and not very interesting and I say that as a person interested in history.

@CalFran right then when you say you are 'mature' how mature exactly? I'm a bit mature myself and you are talking me into a Mumsnet Sponsored Find a Cowboy Holiday...

I'm thinking start off with a dude ranch to ease participants into the swing of it and work up some cowboy lingo, then National Cowboy Hall of Fame, then a rodeo, then serious hunting in remote towns for gen- U- ahine cahbays (supposed to be Texan type accent).

NotAClueZ · 03/01/2024 15:19

I've just thought - do they have Cowboy Conferences and Conventions? don't have time to google but thats where we need to go. The conference hotel bar after hours.

SeaToSki · 03/01/2024 15:21

Do you want a proper cowboy, or just someone who thinks they might like to be a cowboy, but lives in a city and doesn't smell like horses and cows for most of the working day?

If you want to watch a TV program with a cowboy and his wife and family, try the Pioneer Woman.. he is quite cute

Marmite27 · 03/01/2024 15:22

I had the same urge after watching ‘The Ranch’ on Netflix.

HerRoyalNotness · 03/01/2024 15:25

If you pitch up to Houston in March you’ll meet them at the rodeo. Otherwise I’d say Montana, Colorado, Wyoming perhaps?

ps the San Antonio river walk may be a man made canal but it’s a real river that runs around it

isthismylifenow · 03/01/2024 15:31

I've been trying to find a cowboy too OP.

I am going to admit, I haven't been very successful. It's not like I'm super fussy or anything, but he does need to look like Kevin Costner and if he also owned a ranch that would help too.

My problem is supply. Seeing as I live in Africa, and I'm going to come straight out with it, not too many cowboys have decided Africa is for them.

So at this point, I might just have to go to a lot of fancy dress parties and hope there are a lot of fellas there with a name starting with C.

Oh, and for goodness sakes, get started on Yellowstone. You don't need to stop there as you have a good few weeks of perving ahead of you, as there are not one, but two sequels!. Actually they are prequels but that doesn't matter.

I do look at Wrangler Jeans in a whole new light now.

Mature enough to know better @NotAClueZ ! Let's just say I have adult children. I'm through my sensible responsible years, and into my I-don't-give-a -fuck-years.

@SeaToSki either will do, I don't have time to be fussy :).

@isthismylifenow if you're properly committed to the cause like me you're going to have to do some international hunting, er, I mean travelling.

Las Vegas in December, book tickets to the rodeo finals. Men in hats and boots all over the place, they might even say howdy and call you little lady.

We could go as a travelling trio, you, me and @NotAClueZ. We will have to meet up somewhere in advance to master the line dance though.

Listen to this before going hunting. Lot of wisdom in these old guys.

I've had this in my head from the moment I read the tread title 😆

I now want to watch The Man from Snowy River...

Lavenderandbrown · 03/01/2024 17:17

Attend a cattle sale. You don’t have to buy anything and it’s open to the public and it’s very interesting to sale the $$$ spent on cattle Look at SAV sale in the Dakotas…north or south? Google black angus cattle sales. They are all over the states. These are real cowboys so they may not have on hats….thats for pretty cowboys in some states. I found my cowboy at a football game.

TigerOnTour · 03/01/2024 17:21

@CalFran go to Patagonia in Argentina if you speak Welsh, there are Welsh speaking cowboys there!

This sounds like a plan. I'm not line dancing though - I'll guard the drinks!

I’ve been to Texas a few times and even got a proposal from a cowboy once lol.
A friend of mine got divorced a couple of years ago from her waster of a husband. She’s since met a Texan online and ended up moving there to be with him, and is extremely happy now.

No not fictional! He'll be in his 50s now.
As pp have said about their cowboys he was terrible in bed (drink didn't help) and not a reader. And his sheets hadn't been recently changed.
I wanted an adventure and my standards were not high under the circumstances.

OK @CalFran - well adult children could put you anywhere from 40 to 104! The into a "don't give a fuck years" suggests to me that you are a bit older than me as I unfortunately still give lots of fucks, too many and inconveniently, but that we are not so far apart as to make a Cowboy Tour out of the question. It's not like I'm 19 and clubbing and you are 65 and knitting!

I think we need to find us a few nice cowboys to teach us to line dance. We can learn on the job. I've seen Billy Ray Cyrus and Steps. The cowboys can show us. In fact it can be an excuse to invite them to the line dancing bar later.

@CalFran - you will have to line dance if there is a cowboy involved. It's the law. Don't worry. It's not really dancing. it's more like stepping.

I like this idea very very much. We could be like that bloke out of Love Actually that goes to American to find a girlfriend - except 3 women finding 3 cowboys. Although I'm more interested in the ranch owner I think...

I am sorry but Rip from Yellowstone is MINE! Although I have now become quite partial to James Dutton in 1883 .
