Where can I find a cowboy?

He'd have to be a fairly mature one since I am fairly mature myself (age wise that is). And I'm slightly scared of horses but I guess there will be occasions when the horse isn't present.

So where do I look?

I think it's the US equivalent of farmer wants a wife. I put my home city here in and it accepted it. Stopped at the point where they asked for an email address tho! Let us know how you get on 🤠

CalFran · 01/01/2024 23:33

Nashville are you in USA at this very moment? Could you perhaps go out and look for a cowboy for me? Save me working on a ranch or travelling to Argentina.

You need to go to Bandera, Texas. It calls itself the Cowboy Capital of the World (and there are quite a few dude ranches in the area). It's in Texas Hill Country which is also becoming in increasingly well known for its wines. Wine AND cowboys, what's not to like?!

They are called stockmen in Australia not cowboys and we have stations not ranches. You could try one of the Country Music Musters or the Tamworth Country Music Festival. You could get a job as a jilaroo, basically a beginner, though basic rising skills are probably a prerequisite. You could go on Farmer Wants a Wife if that reality show is still running.

I wouldn't worry about the language barrier in Argentina, if TV has taught me nothing else it's shown that language is never a barrier to true love or a hot fling for that matter.

SkaneTos · 01/01/2024 23:37

I have never been too a dude ranch, but I would love to be a guest at one!
I have heard really good things about them, but mostly from people who love horses and horseback riding.

NashvilleQueen · 01/01/2024 23:38

Sadly @CalFran I'm in the NW of England but as my name might suggest I have a love for all things country including a cowboy!

NotAClueZ · 01/01/2024 23:39

If you want someone that dresses like a cowboy but may not actually be a cowboy, Texas is full of them. Boots and ten gallon hats and all that jazz. They probably have cowboys.

Maybe go here for some tips:

Or get a flight to Denver - the rodeo / stock show starts on Jan 6th so in a couple of days. Lots of cowboys in town for that!

(I used to go to Denver on business a lot - and occasionally Texas - hence my slightly unusual knowledge of cowboy things lol. )

@CalFran for an immediate cowboy fix, please direct thyself to all the series of Yellowstone. Then off to Montana. I’m already planning how I bump into RIP 😂

AdoraBell · 01/01/2024 23:42

If you want a rugged one I can recommend going to Chile or Argentina and get a Gaucho.

Aintnosupermum · 01/01/2024 23:42

I’m in Texas. The cowboys here are fake. They look great but are massive Trumpsters and are a bit limited.

I don’t recommend American men in general. I think Canadian men are the best the Americas offer.

ArchetypalBusyMum · 01/01/2024 23:43

Get yourself to Mount Isa rodeo (Oz).
Small town. Swamped by cowboys for the rodeo, female to male ratio about 1:10 for the duration, and they know how to dance...
Phew, that was a fun weekend. 😁

Bbq1 · 01/01/2024 23:44

We've been to Cali but no cowboys were seen!

"Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?"... Do you remember that song in the '90s, by Paula Cole?

Anyway, I like @Singleandproud 's suggestion!

I saw a funny meme this week that pointed out that Willie Nelsons - Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys - came out 18 years before Where have all the cowboys gone

I mean I know correlation doesn't mean causation but that seems pretty solid to me

That's very helpful, thank you for the dude ranch information.

Have either of you been to one? I don't want to waste 2 weeks mucking out the stables (or whatever) unless I have firsthand witness accounts that there are cowboys on these ranches who are willing and able.

I've been to a dude ranch, in Colorado.
It was brilliant - horseback rides, trekking/ camping, fishing (angling), campfire cooking, a 'rodeo' for the kids at the end.
Nice cabins, lovely dining room. Great cook - food was superb.
Bear poop, several snakes sighted, etc...
Also starry skies.

mathanxiety · 02/01/2024 00:05

And capable cowboys. . .

Singleandproud · 02/01/2024 00:06

I can't see those videos but there's a guy on YouTube other SM that splits wood in a forest who is rugged and v. attractive and make me feel bad for sexually objectifying him....but not so bad I stop watching.

WhichEllie · 02/01/2024 00:35

Wyoming, but is very rugged/rural.

California has lots of cowboys as well but not so much on the coast. They’re in the central part, like the San Joaquin Valley and the lower parts of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

EeesandWhizz · 02/01/2024 00:57

Surprisingly enough Florida produces more beef that you would think - I'm sure it is/was in the top 10 states for beef production, and it has a huge area around Ocala for all things horse. Go on a road trip of rodeos and state/county fairs but stay away from anything in the Orlando/Kissimmee area (unless it's the Silver Spurs rodeo in Feb).

Finlesswonder · 02/01/2024 01:04

If you're gunna do a cowboy it has to be American or nothing.

Maybe you can go to an open space and cook beans "grits" and "biscuits" and let the smell draw them to you. Watch out though they aren't the same as our biscuits IIRC
