I have an inappropriate head shape for woolly hats

I cant wear them

In order to get them to cover my ears, they cover the tops of my eyes

Additionally, something about my head shape means they ride up my head and eventually sort of pop off my head.

I tried again for one last time tonight and failed.

Its a burden .

Aha, exact same problem. Have you tried downsizing?

uhOhOP · 01/01/2024 00:22

This made me chuckle, so thanks!

Gingernaut · 01/01/2024 00:30

I've got a relatively large head

It's quite difficult to find any woolly bobble hat or beanie that covers my ears

Those I do find are for men, they're big, boring and often come up to my eyebrows

I do have a small head but Im not sure I can cope with the trauma of getting more hats to try with, only to be badly let down #egghead

The top of my head is flat, so I look quite odd in a hat which fits my head closely: just a big face. Instead I wear a baker boy hat, à la Peaky Blinders, which gives me some shape on top, and is elasticated at the back so it stays in place even in a stiff breeze. Highly recommended.

bellac11 · 01/01/2024 00:40

I cant imagine they cover your ears though?

Its my ears I want covered, rather than my head

Ive tried those woolly bands, like wide woolen head bands but they have the same effect of covering my eyes if I try to have it over my ears

I have a very small head and have to wear childrens hats. Very hard to get something plain!

WelshDaffodil · 01/01/2024 00:43

Get thee to Mountain Warehouse, you can try on many in the shop :)

TheMousePipes · 01/01/2024 00:45

I look like a potato in a woolly hat.

BeckyBloomwood3 · 01/01/2024 00:46

Why don't you just wear earmuffs instead of woolly hats then?

I dont really like the feeling of them. I do have some, they are closer on your ears than a soft hat

Another vote for ear muffs.

I don't have the issue you have with hats but the elastic headband things always seem to slide up and up and up and eventually just flop about around my ponytail or bun, even if I pin it in place. I'd love to have the head shape where they stay on.

Tonight1 · 01/01/2024 00:55

@bellac11 I'm on a shopping trip later this week to see if I can find something suitable, if I do I'll pass on details

Hermittrismegistus · 01/01/2024 00:57

You can buy bandless earmuffs. Like little pockets that slip over your ears.

WhatWouldAliciaDo · 01/01/2024 00:57

Could you sew some wool onto the hat near each ear, and tie it under your chin, op?

Can you not position the hat pointing back? I can't put a hat fully vertical, I have to tilt it back. So a bobble would not be on the top of my head but pointing backwards.

Another option is one of those hood/scarf things as they have the opening orientated forwards.

Feel a bit overinvested in your hat troubles. Sending strength.

Yes I do point it back and then it doesnt cover my ears.

Pray for me.

Other cultures sometimes have wonderful solutions to problems we also have. And China is a very inventive nation. With that in mind I had a google... I like the mask one, it'd warm your nose as well as your ears.

Some good ideas here

I forgot the other challenge which is that Im a fuss pot with regard to fabrics and colours.

I wouldnt wear too much obvious polyester (shudder) or fleece (urgh)

1930s style felt cloche hat? Or you can get earmuffs where the band goes round the back of your head?

The mask-muff (muff-mask just sounds wrong) comes in blue! And is probably more the sweat of indentured workers than polyester. That got a bit dark, sorry...but given the likely grain of truth to it maybe you are right to turn your nose up at the google results 😛

A friend of mine who has a lot of curly hair, like I do, wears hers inside her hats, and has crocheted herself a couple of sort of oversized beret style things which she pops her hair into like a bag, and wears over her ears. Not sure if that style would work with how you wear your hair, though.
