I have an inappropriate head shape for woolly hats

bellac11 · 01/01/2024 00:19

I cant wear them

In order to get them to cover my ears, they cover the tops of my eyes

Additionally, something about my head shape means they ride up my head and eventually sort of pop off my head.

I tried again for one last time tonight and failed.

Its a burden .

Do you (know someone who can) knit?

Here’s a free pattern for a hat with ear flaps and here’s another.

Here, here and here are paid patterns by the same designer.

Branster · 01/01/2024 01:16

Have you tried folding the front edge so that it doesn't end up over your eyes? Essentially shortening the front part of the hat.

Or try Russian style hats, the ones with flaps hanging down over the ears, I had one in wool years ago from Next. As far removed from a sexy look as you can possibly imagine but it was a very warm and comfy hat.

Failing all suggestions on this thread, just wear one of those wool scarves folded into a triangle and tied under your chin. Needs must and all that 😁

lovelyoldtree · 01/01/2024 01:22

I have a big, misshapen head and don't suit any hats at all.

bellac11 · 01/01/2024 01:24

Yes Ive tried folding the front of the hat above my eyes but it either just flaps back down or moves the whole rim up and therefore the ears arent covered.

Sounds like its Ena Sharples for me then

What a shame my mother has passed, I could have asked her to knit you a bonnet or a balaclava, depending on your mood!
My (poor) children got new ones every year!

I used to rock a hat back in the day when I had cheekbones! Imagine a red hat tilted over one eye in my New Romantic phase 😊

Now I wear Wooly hats and a Wooly beret and look like my nanna in her 80s, not a trendsetter from the 80s.

I have a fabulous handmade felted hat, purchased at the Frost Fayre in Glastonbury at the end of November.
I have worn it once since as it will melt in the never bloody ending rain.

You need one of those Gregory Porter type hats. Used to have them as a child in the 70s.

You could go full Gilead? If you can perfect a suitably stern expression

Balaclava? Headscarf in the style of the late QE2? Deerstalker like Sherlock Holmes?

bellac11 · 01/01/2024 01:46

Wow I love that

I would look suitably unhinged in it I reckon

This would work for me, too! And I would love to see the reactions as I swank around with a warm head and ears.

You need one of these hats we used to have in the 70's

I have exactly the same issues! Such a pain, I want to look cute and be warm in a bobble hat.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/01/2024 02:29

When DS was a little I crocheted him a great hat with ear flaps, could you learn to crochet OP?

I also have a previous poster’s problem with elastic headbands riding up at the back and can’t keep one on for more than five minutes. Hoods on raincoats are my biggest problem though, I have a short neck so need to sew a tuck into the back of my hood otherwise it flops over my eyes.

SammyScrounge · 01/01/2024 03:18

I look like I'm auditioning for 'Last of the Summer Wine' in my woolly hat. Do I care? No. Ears must be protected at all costs.

Passingthethyme · 01/01/2024 05:33

Sorry haven't RTFT, could you get someone to knit one for you?

Emma8888 · 01/01/2024 05:37

Shaped ear band (not one that is rectangular all the way around but one that dips over the ears. Wear your hair in a bun to stop it riding up.

You also get wooly hats with ear flaps coming down which are great. I also suffer from cover ears = covered eyes syndrome with many standard hats.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 01/01/2024 06:21

I have a small head, so most hats cover my face, too 😁 Fortunately, I hate hats, they make my head itch, and I don't really feel the cold. That's no help, I realise.

I do have a cotton hat with a brim for when it's hot and I have to be outside - the inside is adjustable so it actually fits.

whatausername · 01/01/2024 06:31

Maybe I've had too little sleep, but if hats don't work should we consider something else entirely? How about training some meerkats to sit on your ears cuddling them? Or koalas to wrap themselves round the sides of your head? They hold on to trees for ages, I'm sure they could manage an egg-shaped head.

TheSandgroper · 01/01/2024 08:30

I feel your pain OP. I have a small, round head, too.

I crocheted myself some wool headbands and they work a treat. Very pleased with myself. And they are so cheap (cos I just use the cheapest wool) I can make a new one every time I get bored with the colour.

User478 · 01/01/2024 08:40

Balaclava.

They have eye holes.

You wouldn't have to do your makeup (except your eyes I suppose)

Also people might think you're going to rob them, you could subvert their expectations by not.

(Or you could, description would say: person with lovely eyes and funny shaped head, the which isn't much to go by)

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 01/01/2024 08:46

How about a balaclava under a bobble hat, slightly more flattering than just a balaclava but you wouldn’t need to worry re hat position
