Help me Turkish Surgeons!

Former · 28/12/2023 20:34

I have been researching Turkish surgeons and looking at their patients blogs.

How do I properly research the hospital and surgeon I am contemplating?

The reviews on various platforms are 5 stars for the hospital but I am aware this can be manipulated. It's hard to find reviews for the actual surgeons unless a vlogger shows their results.

Anyone who has been and knows how to thoroughly research?

I'm a surgeon, in the UK. I regularly deal with patients who have become seriously unwell following surgery in Turkey. They all did it with the very best of intentions and did their research to the best of their ability. But unfortunately many of them had delayed presentations with their complications due to having to travel home etc, which in some cases contributed to them being more seriously unwell. Sadly we've had 2 deaths in young women in the past 2 years (just in my hospital).

My advice would be to avoid travelling abroad for surgery.

Teaandtoast456 · 28/12/2023 20:46

What kind of surgery are you considering?

DuploTrain · 28/12/2023 20:50

Really don’t do it.

I know someone who stopped breathing half way through her surgery in Turkey.

She is permanently brain damaged and has been in hospital for over a year. She was in a coma for several months, now she is conscious but cannot talk, feed herself, take herself to the toilet etc.

Also a lot of NHS trusts are refusing to correct the botched jobs/ complications (unless an emergency) so you will have to pay privately for that. So you may as well save up and pay privately in the UK in the first place.

The news is full of people who thoroughly did their research about Turkish cosmetic surgery. Many of the people are actually still alive. Which may not be saying much. Spend your money on some counselling to come to terms with your issues around body image. It'll be a lot safer.

Walkingwithdinosaurs · 28/12/2023 21:35

Honestly just get your surgery here at home. I need surgery within the next few years and I will 100% not be travelling to Turkey for it.

My first cosmetic surgery was in Manchester and it was difficult enough travelling home to Dublin (where I lived at the time) never mind from another country so far away.

Perfectlystill · 28/12/2023 21:40

Please don't go to Turkey for surgery. I know of so so many people who've had major complications or worse - eg organs stolen while under the knife.

Don't do it.

pinkstripeycat · 28/12/2023 21:45

Organs stolen? Heavens! That’s shocking!

bellac11 · 28/12/2023 21:48

Oh god the organs stolen story again

FatFemale · 28/12/2023 21:51

Don't do it. Stick to the UK

SisterMichaelsHabit · 28/12/2023 21:51

OMG two threads in three days. When will people stop being so unbelievably feckless with their most valuable asset in life-their health-for the sake of just saving up for another year or two and paying to get it done somewhere safe??
There are loads of safe destinations in the EU where you can get cheap surgery by properly qualified surgeons in countries where the medical supplies meet the standards you would expect and the support staff are fully trained and there is AFTERCARE.

Just stop this madness! Stop leaving your relatives and the NHS to pick up the pieces for your stupidity all of you!

FastingBitchFace · 28/12/2023 21:51

@Perfectlystill How many is “so so many”? And how many of these people you know have had major complications and how many have had organs stolen?

KitchenSinkLlama · 28/12/2023 21:52

Reading google links isn't research.

UserM6 · 28/12/2023 21:52

I think you are considering it because it sounds financially better next to U.K. private costs.
I’m not sure there are good figures because the NHS sees only the disasters and Turkey will show only the success stories.
If the NHS offered you the choice of Turkey at the x higher risk or the U.K. at a lower risk but longer wait would you still be so keen? I think most people would op for the safer treatment and reliable after care, even if that was being able to get to a hospital in an hour rather than 5 plus hours.

Oh I would definitely do it in the UK and I have before, but the price is prohibitive this time and I prefer the results that the Turkish surgeons achieve.

Plus the NHS nearly killed me twice and crippled me once. Not cosmetic. All tried to cover it up each time and were very cruel and unsympathetic too.

It's not fit a sleeve it for lipo 360 plus a couple more areas or a TT.

Eh? In English?

LolaLaLaLou · 28/12/2023 23:02

Check out JordieGotSleeved on Instagram. She's had a sleeve but recently had 360 lipo, boob job and BBL. Her and her sister went to Turkey together for it and have posted their entire experience on Instagram.

Former · 28/12/2023 23:07

@LolaLaLaLou Yes that's the surgeon I was trying to research. The one who did her latest surgery.

Total anecdote I know but I’ve had 5 surgeries on the NHS. 3/5 I had major issues due to incompetence. I’ve had one surgery in Turkey and I was cared for amazingly. I had practically everything checked to ensure I was good for surgery. Excellent care.

OMG that has scared the hell out of me. What the hell happened to her?

This has put me off.

I don't understand the extortionate prices of the UK surgeons. The after care was being kicked out the same day of op too!

MrsBungle · 28/12/2023 23:12

When I say practically everything checked (I realise that sounds like they didn’t check what needed checking 😂) I mean I saw a heart doctor, lung doctor, full MRI. 100x more than was checked for my NHS surgeries.

Yes, but she obviously did it as advertising for the clinic.
at least if the nhs fuck it up, they’ll fix it!

NannyGythaOgg · 28/12/2023 23:13

Thousands of people have successful surgery in Turkey every year.
Thousands of people have successful surgery in the UK every year
Some people in Turkey/UK have problems with the surgery they have had - these are what make the news.

I'm not sure what the difference in the success ratio is. I haven't had surgery in Turkey but I have had medical treatment and overall it was cleaner, more professional, friendlier than equivalent treatment in the UK (of which I've also had plenty).

You are right to do your research, and I'm not sure how you regulate your research BUT I am with you on this. Don't rule it out.

There is surgery I want, but can't afford even in Turkey at the moment. If I could - I would definitely be going there

Former · 28/12/2023 23:16

@MrsBungle Yes and I am really lucky to be here.

Also it wasn't just one person's mistake it was several mistakes from surgeons, scanners, doctors and GPS. Totally incompetent. Extremely cruel too, no compassion. Very sneaky too.

The NURSES are the ABSOLUTE BEST in the NHS though, I actually got through because of them.
