Help me Turkish Surgeons!

Former · 28/12/2023 20:34

I have been researching Turkish surgeons and looking at their patients blogs.

How do I properly research the hospital and surgeon I am contemplating?

The reviews on various platforms are 5 stars for the hospital but I am aware this can be manipulated. It's hard to find reviews for the actual surgeons unless a vlogger shows their results.

Anyone who has been and knows how to thoroughly research?

Ah, TT is tummy tuck. I thought it stood for Turkey teef 😆

Elvanseshortage · 29/12/2023 07:36

Of course Turkish surgeons are as good as British ones, why wouldn’t they be? Of course private hospitals in Turkey are clean and the staff friendly. That’s the case probably for any private hospital in the world.

The fact remains that you are travelling a long distance for quite a major procedure. All surgeries carry risk but if it has been done a long way from home and with a private provider who is it’s not easy to hold accountable, you are taking the biggest risk of all.

Do you speak Turkish? Do you know all the medical bodies/inspection bodies for medicine in Turkey? Have you checked that all the staff involved are fully qualified ? Have you read actual medical research about the procedures you want? These things are actual research. Reading blogs and reviews online is not research.

This is one of the most stupid things to do.
My dad spent 3 months in hospital this year post oesophageal surgery for cancer. He was tube fed. Once when his tube moved he had to wait 3 days for it replacing because the queue was so long- everyone else on it was post Turkish bariatric surgery.
And don’t get me started on Turkey teeth. Have the sense you were born with.

I have an acquaintance who grew sick and sicker to discover that she is living with one kidney after cosmetic surgery in Turkey. Absolutely baffling but it was taken during a boob job. The skill level to perform this was insane - it's not about quality of medical ability but accountability.

How do you get to a kidney via an incision for a boob job? Surely you'd have to go in from the back. How the hell did she not notice when she woke up?

People say this about being 'saggy'

But if the skin is such that it catches on clothing, causes infection, causes discomfort when sitting down, moving around etc, then it needs removing.

Unless I’m reading this wrongly, it doesn’t sound as though op falls into this category and I was posting about her specific situation. I totally understand some people will have a lot of issues with excess skin and need surgery to address this.

@TheFormidableMrsC Surely if she's in that much pain, she would get dentures or implants. I personally don't believe in shaving down health teeth but I know some people are extremely self conscious and can be life changing for them. Again there are many who are happy with their teeth. Once again the costs British dentists set makes it prohibitive for many in the UK.

Only the rich can have nice teeth and bodies it seems.

Destructive dentistry like this is definitely life changing but not for the better!
Bleach, Invisalign, maybe a little composite.

Meadowgrasses · 29/12/2023 07:51

Maybe some counselling first op. What do you mean by out of proportion? Have you ever looked at someone else and thought “0h, they look out of proportion, how awful, why haven’t they had painful and risky surgery to sort themselves out?” Seriously nobody will be thinking this about you, it is in your head!

The foreign office advises against all travel to parts of Turkey at the moment
it also cautions against medical tourism due to deaths and botulism outbreaks after weight loss proceedures

Travelling for medical tourism cancels your normal travel insurance as does travelling against FCO advice and you will not get cover for travelling for medical tourism

@AreYouReallyOkay Sorry it wasn't clear what I said. I don't want a Tummy Tuck, I need a liposuction 360 of stomach and flanks and arms and perhaps back. I think lipo is a breeze; I'm sure a TT is no joke though.

I do not like the idea of not having a face to face consultation first and that is what makes me apprehensive about Turkey.

Take the money and spend it on therapy instead.

No one needs lipo.

CoatOfArms · 29/12/2023 08:00

True, but the bits which you are advised against travel to are a thin strip on the border with Syria and Iraq. Most of Turkey is fine and there is not any advice not to travel.

ThemysteriousH · 29/12/2023 08:06

@welshweasel seeing your comment about 2 young women dying has really changed my way of thinking.
As someone (young 30s) in SW. Wales looking at bariatric surgery abroad due to waiting times this has hit home

Eh? The only you can spare is a kidney. They all serve a purpose in keeping you alive. Who wakes up without a liver for example?

Sometimes they wake up without a brain. But they went to sleep without a brain too.

Bollocks.
She got sicker and sicker and didn't notice a massive stitch in her back where her kidney would have been? Or are you telling us they pulled it out through the hole under her boob? Hmm

Exactly! (See my post upthread.)

OP, if you have complications will you go back to Turkey for health care or will you be rocking up at your local NHS GP or hospital?

Jk987 · 29/12/2023 09:03

Perfectlystill · 28/12/2023 21:40

Please don't go to Turkey for surgery. I know of so so many people who've had major complications or worse - eg organs stolen while under the knife.

Don't do it.

How do you know of all these people? Are they friends or people you've read about?

BeaRF75 · 29/12/2023 09:09

Maybe spend your money on some decent therapy, OP, because absolutely nobody needs the type of surgery you mention.

welshweasel · 29/12/2023 09:36

@ilovebreadsauce I don't do any private work at all actually, I'm (more than) full time NHS.

There are obviously some good surgeons abroad, it's just really hard to find out which ones are reputable. In the UK there is far more regulation, you can look at whether a surgeon is BAAPS registered, and you have the safety net of the NHS should there be complications.

The NHS is by no means perfect, but there's nowhere I'd rather be if I became seriously unwell. Of course we wouldn't refuse to deal with complications from surgery elsewhere, nor should we, that would go against the very ethos of the NHS!

You also have no comeback if you go abroad and are left with results you aren't happy with - in the UK there are procedures to follow that will ensure you get a fair hearing and further surgery if you need it.

Yes you can get complications from surgery wherever it is performed. However, we rarely see patients admitted in extremis with sepsis etc from anywhere other than Turkey.

welshweasel · 29/12/2023 09:44

@ThemysteriousH there are plenty of excellent WLS specialists in south wales/bristol/birmingham. You don't need to go abroad.

lastchristmas80 · 29/12/2023 09:54

Another1throwaway · 29/12/2023 02:20

Oh, does having your jaw wired firm up skin that has been irreparably stretched?

Presumably the skin stretched because of poor diet/over eating? Having surgery and continuing to eat inappropriately isn’t a miracle solution ya know? Best to start with the root issue and work back. OP doesn’t mention what age she is or which non-evasive routes she’s attempted?

lastchristmas80 · 29/12/2023 09:56

There’s actually something really gross about being too stingy to afford yourself proper cosmetic work, getting butchered abroad and landing back at NHS’s feel. Sure let the tax payer cover the cost of your over eating. Disgusting behaviour - anyone considering should be ashamed of themselves.

Sorry, but I absolute disagree, refusing to pay the cost of UK cosmetic surgery, being butchered abroad, then flying home and allowing the NHS (and therefore the tax payer) to suck up your poor mistakes should be forbidden. I’d rather we stopped recharging other medical tourist with genuine issues - than propping up the UK’s entitled overweight population. Presumably the NHS has a list of surgeries they do cover the cost of for obese patients? But what the OP is describing falls outside of this?

Definitely in this case - a lobotomy might be a kindness in fact. 🤣

Do you think that about all overweight people?
