Help me Turkish Surgeons!

Former · 28/12/2023 20:34

I have been researching Turkish surgeons and looking at their patients blogs.

How do I properly research the hospital and surgeon I am contemplating?

The reviews on various platforms are 5 stars for the hospital but I am aware this can be manipulated. It's hard to find reviews for the actual surgeons unless a vlogger shows their results.

Anyone who has been and knows how to thoroughly research?

The sister of a friend of mine died on an operating table abroad where she went for cosmetic surgery. Please don't do it.

everymirror · 28/12/2023 23:19

I wouldn't get surgery done In turkey, simply because I don't speak Turkish at all and it's not my culture. I'd rather spend years saving and have statistically a better outcome on the NHS than risk it all and be the one that died on the op table and never came home.

Namechanged.

My colleague told us they’d carefully researched their surgery. I’m not sure what they did to ascertain that but any concern we voiced was swatted away.

They were rushed to hospital within days of their return.

Perhaps not too dissimilar to the poster above, my colleague has been left with brain damage, an inability to walk without support and cannot function as they once did. Will never function as they once did.

A young vibrant life forever damaged. Forever.

They lost the weight and arguably, they look great if you are just looking at their figure. But that is the only thing that comes close to being described as great.

They have also lost their life as they knew it.

I’ve no doubt there are successful surgeries.

But is the only surgery I have knowledge of.

I'm not totally clear if you meant you want a TT and lipo?

I had TT and lipo done in the UK privately and I would never ever say it should be done abroad with little aftercare.

The first week is truly brutal, and I developed an infection in my wound which required 3x weekly dressing changes and various different (expensive) types of bandages and ointments and really good aftercare. The nurses phoned me every day because they were worried about sepsis.

The NHS would never be able to provide that level of care if you needed it, and I would imagine it would be given minimal (and certainly not specialist) wound care, ending up in hospital when you hit a dangerous and critical point.

If you really want and need it (and I get it because I did) either save or finance it.

Total anecdote I know but I’ve had 5 surgeries on the NHS. 3/5 I had major issues due to incompetence. I’ve had one surgery in Turkey and I was cared for amazingly. I had practically everything checked to ensure I was good for surgery. Excellent care.

Same. The op is going to get a load of scaremongering bollocks asking that on mn. People don’t just go to turkey for cosmetic surgery. My best friends husband needed a serious surgical procedure after an accident. There was a 6 week waiting list on the nhs, if he waited that long he would have been left with lifelong issues, and he couldn’t afford to go private in the Uk. So he paid to go to Turkey and had the procedure there

CoatOfArms · 28/12/2023 23:26

Yes! Go overseas for major surgery, to a country where you don't know the language or culture, no idea about the health service, training of the surgeon, aftercare or recovery time.

What could POSSIBLY go wrong? Jeezo. It's cheap for a reason.

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/12/2023 23:28

A colleague went there to have her teeth done. She is in permanent relentless agony. Her liver is damaged from painkillers. There is nothing that can be done aside from removing all the stumps left of her teeth under the veneers and having false teeth or a mouth full of implants, all of which can't be done under the NHS. She deeply regrets it. The "plus" is that she's lost loads of weight because she can only eat puréed food 🤷🏻‍♀️

@AreYouReallyOkay Sorry it wasn't clear what I said. I don't want a Tummy Tuck, I need a liposuction 360 of stomach and flanks and arms and perhaps back. I think lipo is a breeze; I'm sure a TT is no joke though.

I do not like the idea of not having a face to face consultation first and that is what makes me apprehensive about Turkey.

@Peoplemakemedespair Yes, so true. A colleague who went for a sleeve said you can just go there to pay for a full health check (without doing any surgery), that would cost thousands in the UK.

I recently had a surgery in the UK, 200 miles away from home. I developed a rare, late onset, complication four weeks after and had to return to see the surgeon several times. After initially raising the problem he asked me to get in my car and come straight away. The final outcome won’t be affected because I’ve had immediate treatment.
I would never go abroad. It’s a false economy. You may be ok but you may not be and then what would you do?

Goldiex · 28/12/2023 23:37

Id go to Turkey for nose job or hair transplant if I were a man. But tummy tuck, bbl, lipo, mummy make over types are really really dangerous in any country, i definitely wouldnt go abroad for something so invasive. I came back from there not long ago on holiday and the whole plane looked like zombies 😂 men with bandaged heads and noses, women kneeling on the floor with drainage tubes because their surgery aftercare is not to sit for prolonged periods. I feel crap when i fly in good health, let alone after major surgery. I speak fluently in 3 language and I wouldnt go any of the countries for major surgery, especially cosmetic.

@TheFormidableMrsC Surely if she's in that much pain, she would get dentures or implants. I personally don't believe in shaving down health teeth but I know some people are extremely self conscious and can be life changing for them. Again there are many who are happy with their teeth. Once again the costs British dentists set makes it prohibitive for many in the UK.

Only the rich can have nice teeth and bodies it seems.

How did you come to the conclusion that you need lipo?

Could the results you are hoping for be achieved in another way?

Former · 28/12/2023 23:45

@TheSquareMile Basically I need to be put back in proportion and no amount of losing weight on my own has achieved it unfortunately.

PickAChew · 28/12/2023 23:46

Who needs lipo?

TheSquareMile · 28/12/2023 23:47

Would you feel comfortable discussing your concerns with your GP?

JollyHollyxmas · 28/12/2023 23:49

I have also heard about nipple stealing during breast surgery. Frightening.

Former · 28/12/2023 23:52

@TheSquareMile I discussed it with a British surgeon and he agreed.

Yes you would if you could afford to do it privately. NHS won't touch her. She can't afford it so she has to live with it. Fuck that.

tescocreditcard · 28/12/2023 23:54

I've had surgery in Turkey too.

I think the British NHS is dire these days and wouldn't even contemplate having surgery here. Not exactly third world standard admittedly, but definately second world

Oh, and dying is a known complication of surgery, regardless of country you have it in.

TheSquareMile · 28/12/2023 23:54

A British surgeon agreed with what?

I'm wondering whether the best way forward for you is to make an appointment with your GP to discuss the way you feel.

Lipo isn't really a breeze - that was the most painful thing during my recovery. It felt like all of my insides had been severely grazed.

I'm a surgeon, in the UK. I regularly deal with patients who have become seriously unwell following surgery in Turkey. They all did it with the very best of intentions and did their research to the best of their ability. But unfortunately many of them had delayed presentations with their complications due to having to travel home etc, which in some cases contributed to them being more seriously unwell. Sadly we've had 2 deaths in young women in the past 2 years (just in my hospital).

My advice would be to avoid travelling abroad for surgery.

ive waited 7 yrs for gallbladder op. how about germany?

tescocreditcard · 28/12/2023 23:57

I'm just waiting for the posts to come by mumsnetters who know somebody who had surgery in Turkey and woke up with only one kidney 😂
