How can I decorate this room pic

So now I have cleaned house. I want to decorate my boys room. And add a few bits to make it feel nicer . I want the room to feel bright and happy. I don't want anything dark. I know they want a rug with rainbow colours so I can base it on that ? But looking for suggestions. All the walks atecwhitecat the moment

I'm.not sure what furniture to put in. Their clothes are not kept in the bedroom . So really it's just their toys.

They are age 7 and 8

Many small wall stickers are easier to apply than one big one. However big ones aren't too bad. You just need to go slow and steady when applying to avoid creases

Yeah I have used wall stickers before they were fine to be honest.

Fair enough on the desk suggestion. You could buy a 4 cube storage unit for each of them to have as bedside tables then it's still multi functional furniture providing them with storage as well zoning a space for each of them individually. That way they can still personalise the wall space above each unit with stickers or certificates, they can use the top of the units for bedside lamps and display their favourite nic nick or toys, and even each pick the colour or pattern of the storage boxes that go inside it? I think giving them each a little bit of space they can have ownership over is important at their age and it's practical as gives them storage rather than buying multiple pieces of furniture

Look for a large print or poster or vertical Lego boards for wall.
toy boxes or shelves and a rug. Invest in a well insulated blind and curtains.

That's a good idea . I think it will look nicer than actual bedside tables as well . I think I will do that .

I'm not changing the curtains they are fone for now m there's nothing wrong with them.

They would probably wreck a print/poster. I have never seen vertical lego boards for walls I'm going to look

Yes the rest I will be doing

I would stick to mostly 2 colours. Assuming that you are keeping the curtains, I would pick up on the yellow as an accent colour.

First would be a large area rug. Ideally a flatwoven cotton one or an indoor/outdoor one. They are usually the cheapest yet most durable and easy to remove marks etc.

Then you storage. Be mindful that children are this age suddenly change within 2-3 years, so don't go too childish. I would get something that can look more grown up as they get older. They can customise their room by putting some if their favourite toys and books out on display.

Wall - I would go for a large world map decal. Educational, interesting to look at and they won't grow out of it too quickly. They're so easy to put on walls/take off again.

Bedding - if you wanted you could buy some new inexpensive matching bedding to tie the room together.

These would be my choices: furniture, rug, bedding all IKEA.

These are all available online. You could also buy them a globe to sit on top of the storage unit. TK Maxx/Home sense usually have lots in this time of year. Some double up as bedside lights.

Yes the outdoor tyre rug is definitely a good Idea I will see hoe that gos , see if I can find anything.

I don't mind them changing in a couple of years. They will likely want a gaming type room in a couple of years . That's fine though

They have 4/5 sets of bedding each based on super heros which they still like. So I'm not in a rush for that I will still look out generally though

If you got the Kallax IKEA storage (the longer one with 8 boxes), then there would be no need to get them bedside tables as you could put a lamp on either end of it and it would be close enough to their beds. It would also give them 4 storage drawers each and space to display their own things each on top. That would be my preferred storage choice. As they get older it could be rotated to be vertical and then used as a book shelf.

The duvet sets above are £13 each so reasonably priced.

IKEA is your friend here OP!

Purplerainpurplesky · 19/12/2023 10:21

IKEA unit in-between for books and toys, bedside tables, big play rug in the middle and a few prints in frames on the wall and then easy to change in and out in the future

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 19/12/2023 12:05

Bedside tables/cabinets for that age I think can be a waste of space or not as useful as the Ikea or habitat cubes, you can get drawers to go into the cube space.

mini shelves will hold nightlights and other things.

Have you considered a false or real mirrored area to give more space (though it looks big enough as it is!)?

Agreed with PP, maps or anything else they’re interested (big birds, planets?) in for walls and adds interest.

Someone up thread suggested the ikea cube ones that have the cubes I can get the inserts for them . Which is an alternative to a bedside table

Room is big. I don't think they would like a mirror or simlar.

So i asked the 2 boys to draw me how they want their room they have said they want all 4 walls rainbow colours and rainbow rug.. im not doing exactly that . But im going to do like a rainbow colour theme. (Not actual rainbows)

They are going to their dad from boxing day for 4 nights I would really like to get it done then . But im not sure how delivery will be over that time. I'm thinking amazon and probably b&q.

You can paint shelves, handles in different rainbow colours...Get different coloured storage boxes for the units, rainbow bunting, things like that.

Alternatively, I once decorated a room with a different colour on each wall. Yes, before I thought it would look shit too lol I copied it from from an interior design magazine and chose complementary shades all in the same family, it looked great and because they were very light shades, really unobtrusive.

You could do one wall in a light blue, one a light green, one light yellow, one light purple. Choose 'white with a hint of...'.

Shithole101 · 20/12/2023 12:03

I'm not going to fit anything to the walls for now. Just doing free standing. Yeah different color walls could be an idea

I have ordered 4 cubed kalax unit with 4 inserts . ×2
And 6 trofast boxes with lids .

I'm now looking for a multi coloured rug , bedside lamps and ceiling light shades

I really want to get it done whilst kids are away they leave boxing day I need room finished by the Friday.

I don't drive so I'm relying on delivery. And going to b&q by bus I will likely get paint fron b&q
