How can I decorate this room pic

So now I have cleaned house. I want to decorate my boys room. And add a few bits to make it feel nicer . I want the room to feel bright and happy. I don't want anything dark. I know they want a rug with rainbow colours so I can base it on that ? But looking for suggestions. All the walks atecwhitecat the moment

I'm.not sure what furniture to put in. Their clothes are not kept in the bedroom . So really it's just their toys.

They are age 7 and 8

Gosh the amount of comments telling me to move the bed from the window. And me saying no. I will be dreaming about moving beds soon . Maybe like bed knobs and broom sticks.

Op a set each of these would look good in the room and you can choose the colours

I have these! They look so lovely

The reason they’re telling you is because it would look better. But as you’ve said, you don’t need to take the advice.

Bedside tables with a lamp each would be a good start

You don’t want advice. The bed by the window is awful. Aesthetically it’s always going to look crap there regardless of triple glazing.

That’s a matter of personal opinion. I think it looks fine aesthetically and it’s clearly the most practical option for how OP’s children use the room, which is more important than aesthetics anyway. OP is asking ‘given this layout, what else would you do’?

Cheeesus · 19/12/2023 08:21

I like the bed by the window. Why not? Anyway.

What are their interests? Look for stickers or a big canvas with eg animals/Star Wars/unicorns/woodland/cars/space and let them choose from a choice of three that you like.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 19/12/2023 08:26

OP I never commented on your original post but finally found you again and just wanted to say well done, what a difference you’ve made in the rooms, you should be very proud of how hard you’ve worked, I hope the kids like their new tidy space! The tree sticker on the first page would look fab between the two beds!

Or planes are nice?

Would the boys like a couple of bean bag chairs? As a child I loved mine.

Northsideoftheriver · 19/12/2023 08:29

Lovely big room OP, I have seen walls divided by zig zags and painted a bold colour on one half. Stickers are a pain in the arse as they bring paint and plaster off. I love the Dunelm wallpaper suggestion from a previous poster.

I like the idea of some shelves, the IKEA book storage shelves are great as are wall mounted trofast.

Northsideoftheriver · 19/12/2023 08:32

@Lamelie really? Is there any need for that?

Netherlandsfirst · 19/12/2023 08:56

Instead of bedside tables I'd get two desks with drawers in them to put on the long wall between the beds. They can then put bedside lamps on those and it's a desk/table for crafts and homework and a bedside table in one. Lots always advertised free round our way on local Facebook.

If budget allows you could put a cork board up above each of their desks for them to personalise, but equally, they can always just blue tac pictures or certificates up, but it at least gives them a focal point for them to do what they want with the space.

Wall stickers will be similar cost to painting by the time you buy paint and the rollers and trays so I'd let your sons choose what they prefer. The good thing about stickers is they can each choose something different and personal to them for above their beds, my children would find it hard to agree on a colour they both liked!

A big rug as mentioned. Then on the long wall on the right toy storage. Again lots always free or cheap on Facebook, or B&M do their own version which is good value but has smaller boxes than the IKEA one.

Perhaps at the end of the bed that's under the window put a big floor cushion or bean bags for a more cosy reading or chill area.

You don't have to do it all at once, so I would suggest starting with the desks and lamps or the toy storage as a priority to keep things clutter free after all the work you've done to get things cleaned up.

Thank you. Its Been hard work. We have all been through hell for several years life has been shit . But things are starting to turn around. I need to be as positive as possible that meant the home feeling better and getting on top of things . Now the house is tidy I want it to feel/look more homely. I think the boys room is the most important because it does look ahit at the moment.

Teen dd has been given jobs , on her floor she has to clean the bathroom, landing and her room she gets 10.00 a week for doing that.

I'm not keen on fixing things to the wall. I will think about it though. So not a definite no.

I have used wall stickers before they seem to come of ok . I will definitely look at wall paper as well .

Definitely looking at ikea ovthink they are good for kids rooms /storage

Desks are a definite no. Ds has autism and he would not cope with that . Any homework or arty stuff is done down stairs not in the bedrooms

Yes something personal to each of then would be nice. They seem to copy each other alot though. Will have a think .

Practicality wise the bed by the window is good because it creates a nice shared toy space in the middle.

What sort of things are your kids into? With kallax units you can get cool inserts like these:
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9520048.htm?cmpid=APP003

I'd recommend making the main expensive pieces e.g. paint, carpet, furniture, universal timeless colours. Then decorate with colour using wall stickers, bedding, rugs, and inserts like above. That way it's cheap to redo when they're older

For wall stickers type into Amazon/Google "wall stickers" plus what they are into, e.g. "football" or "space"
