These are all lovely, we don't put ours up till Friday which is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on the 8th of December and traditional for Irish Catholics and they come down until the 7th of January.

Moonshine86 · 05/12/2023 16:50

This is very inspiring. I do love a tree pic and will be putting ours up tonight.

@rdlong Irish Catholic here and it wasn’t tradition in my house growing up. 8 Dec was the day my mother got her slaves (us children!) to clean the house in preparation for the tree going up much closer to Christmas.

First tree up here.

Well it is in my family and most other people I know although people have started to do their own thing now, but putting up decorations on the 8th (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) is definitely a thing for Catholics in Ireland and Italy as well I think. We also had to all muck in and clean the house top to bottom but my mum did make it fun with Christmas music and would reward us with treats.

Well,‘I don’t put mine up till much closer to Christmas, but my roof fell off in a storm last month and we’re living out of boxes and I don’t know where anything is, so I’m thinking there might not be any decorations on the tree this year… Have asked a friend who drives for an emergency decorations buying trip to a charity shop - this thread spurred me on to ask her so thank you!

XelaM · 05/12/2023 17:01

My daughter decorated ours - I think it's beautiful 🤩 and she had a big task to hide all the holes from our decade-old tree that's seen better days (but has sentimental value) 🥰

Random mix of baubles and decorations but I can tell you the story behind every one. Dd(16) hates it and says she can't wait to move out and have her own properly colour coordinated tree.

@rdlong oh I definitely remember the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It was also traditionally a day where people would come up to Dublin to take children to see Santa and do Christmas shopping. Im probably a lot older than you and when I was a child peoples trees went up much late than now as far as I remember. Obviously now people use the Late Late Toy Show as the day to put up the tree!

MrsMarzetti · 05/12/2023 17:20

If DH ever gets around to cutting it down,

muchalover · 05/12/2023 17:29

Fairy hasn't arrived yet. She's 60 and is having a makeover first.

This is currently our 'tree' until someone has been in the last ft and disconnected the cat tree from the ceiling

That’s cute but it’s not a Christmas tree? It’s a cat scratching tower with some old soft toys stored on it?

Borntobeamum · 05/12/2023 18:07

Only moved in 2 weeks ago but it felt like home immediately x x

So many lovely trees. All different but lovely. Quite like the ‘wrapped’ trees and the coloured light. I have warm white but coloured lights remind me of 70s childhood Christmas’.

Hedjwitch · 05/12/2023 18:24

Just done.

OldTinHat · 04/12/2023 20:11

I'm not doing decs this year either. Not worth bothering with as I'm on my own again! Call me scrooge!

Not worth it for just you.
You are the first person who is worth your effort.

cardibach · 05/12/2023 18:56

It’s a tad early for me, though Facebook memories suggest I went this early last year too…
It’s a bit ‘less is more’ but that’s how I like it. All red, green and gold (with a bit of white).

cardibach · 05/12/2023 18:57

Hmm. Picture said it was attached he’d but clearly isn’t. Trying again.
