Are you concerned that the white population is declining ?

Leobynature · 03/12/2023 20:45

I am not white and this is a healthy discussion!

The last consensus in the UK showed a decline in the white British population. This is similar to the USA which will see only around 50% of a white population by 2045. Whites are also on the decline in South Africa.

Putin has recently called for Russian women to have 8 or more babies.

Is this the right approach, what action, if any should be taken or is this just part of ‘evolution’?

i just wondered how white families felt about this? I would be quite upset if my race was on the decline

I think the posters talking about the culture is interesting. Should we bring back country dancing, the maypole, Morris dancing, folk music back into our school's? The kids are, rightly, exposed to all other cultures so why has English folk culture been omited?

Robinbuildsbears · 03/12/2023 21:06

Yes.

Leobynature · 03/12/2023 21:09

Wow! What a consensus.

Mixed race people are on the increase and there has also been a huge increase in the migration of Eastern European’s to the UK.

Personally, my race is my identity. It’s holds my culture, traditions, values, ethics and beliefs and I would feel saddened if this was no more.

My race is why I am me. Its more important to me than being a woman. It id the strength and courage of my ancestors which inspires me.

No
But also having to coat kids in suntan lotion every day for school isnt fun.
Relatives with skin cancer
and always being told you look ill etc.

Bernardmanning · 03/12/2023 21:10

I would have thought that, certainly in the UK, people of colour will end up having less children as they become more westernised, coupled with climate change and financial pressures. So no, I'm not worried about different skin colours. However, I do worry more about changes to values, particularly that of women.

Equally British culture is that of an island nation with a millennia and more of immigrant and emigrant influences. We aren't a white nation, we are a hybrid nation and that's reflected in our responses.

@neilyoungismyhero
i understand this and that was what I wondered.

Didn't we all come out of Africa and the further north we travelled the whiter and blonder we became for vitamin D or something?

I've always assumed that we should all be a bunch of runts from inbreeding from the few tribes that left Africa. I also read that a few escaped animals can result in a healthy population of thousands. Which I don't really get, given than you shouldn't really have babies with your cousins etc.

So, I always have figured that Africa should have the widest gene pool, and diverse breeding should be a good thing.

Despite being partnered with someone that gets sunburn if they turn a lamp on, I personally prefer the look of those of mixed heritage.

The whole British culture thing to me is a load of old bollocks, but you don't really see it until you are away from it. I couldn't even tell you what it is. I'm secular so don't have community belonging through a common religion or rituals. I don't even care for Christmas. My main communication with others is via certain bubbles and is worldly through the Internet. I resonate and feel healthier in those communities than even family. Truth be told I have barely anything in common with family whatsoever apart from growing up with them and going through troubles. But I still feel the bondage of family.

I've lived in many multicultural towns and cities. And there has been ghettos in each. For whatever reason.

Plus my 'blackest' friend is about the most British of all of them, whatever that means.

I used to love country dancing at school! And then you do si do…

newnamethanks · 03/12/2023 21:13

No not at all. Are you Laurence Fox?

jesterdourt · 03/12/2023 21:13

I mean I think it worries some people hence Brexit & there’s also a resurgence in far right terrorism.

Ritual humiliation at my school. As soon as that cassette player came out everyone paired up apart from the really unpopular kids.

Charlie2121 · 03/12/2023 21:14

I think very few people are bothered about skin colour. What bothers people is social conflict.

People want to live in societies where everyone is pulling together for the greater good. I don’t think we have that in the UK at the moment. One of the reasons is that many ethnic groups prefer to cluster together.

For a country with such a diverse ethnic mix there is an almost unbelievable degree of segregation.

I’m not sure how that changes as much of it is linked to the purchase of residential property so not something that is easy to reverse.

i find that quite sad. The 4 nations that make up our isles each have their own music, their own regional foods, dialects, dances, clothes and industries. There's actually a register of endangered industries which is quite a sorry sight to read.

Leobynature · 03/12/2023 21:20

Bizarre that people think I have to be Putin, or Lawrence Fox or goady to ask a simple and interesting question and if people respond in an angry or racist way that says more about them.

I think it is also thought provoking how angry some can become when you discuss race, particularly white women who respond with ‘you wouldn’t be able to say that if you were white.

Yet I can talk to people of other races about skin colour, religion, culture and the movement and settlement of communities without them being so triggered.

OP posts:
avocardigan · 03/12/2023 21:26

Literally nobody is “angry” on this thread.

The question “is the white population in decline” followed by mention of Putin and South Africa and the question being directed to “white families” and the suggestion that responders are “triggered” are all, weirdly enough, all far-right talking points.

Hmmmmmmmm

Greenshake · 03/12/2023 21:27

Note to OP …people don’t REALLY think you are Vladimir Putin. Sure he has enough on his angrily overstacked plate without getting dragged into a Mumsnet brouhaha.

Gilead · 03/12/2023 21:29

I read some research a while ago that stated that in a few hundred years all of us would be mixed race.
Doesn’t bother win the slightest.

This is so grossly simplistic. You listen to some trad Portugese music, and it sounds like it's Scottish. I can't think of any inspiring British food dishes! I'll never go out for an English (I'll have the blandest thing on the menu). The dialects and accents intrigue me though. But where are we going with this, the Norman invasion, Germanic English? What the hell is white? European?

I like to read about heritage and historic industry. But I'm not the kind of person that would wet myself over who lived in my house in previous years. Most towns are pretty much identikit these days.

I think there are plenty sad old sods that are pretty lost and jealous of other happier cohorts. Lamenting non existent halcyon days of yore. Desperate for belonging and some kind of identity. It would explain pathetic tribal politics.

Frocksinsocks · 03/12/2023 21:30

Are you sure you're not Putin as you seem a bit triggered?

Add in a convenient "I'm not white honest guv" and it feels a bit like someone is 🎣

I refer you to my earlier post where I mention the British Isles are made up of millennia of immigration and emigration. We are an island nation and our culture and heritage reflects this.

British food reflects our seafaring past. I strongly suggest you read up on regional dishes they're as broad a variety as the accents we see on our shores.

I love how our people shift with the seas. Our culture is multiculture.

CatsCocktailsCareers · 03/12/2023 21:45

@SaturdayGiraffe makes a valid point about culture becoming more obsolete. That would worry me more than skin colour.

I do find the lumping together of humans into broad categories of White, Black, Asian pretty pointless. Just as Icelandic culture is a world away from Cornish culture or Welsh culture or Greek culture, so is Ghanian culture distinct from Jamaican culture, or Nigerian culture, or Korean or Vietnamese culture distinct from Bangladeshi culture.

CatsCocktailsCareers · 03/12/2023 21:51

If Eastern European immigration is increasing to the UK, surely that means that whites in the UK aren't actually dying out but if anything increasing in number? It's just more white people coming to a majority white country?

Eastern European isn't a different skin colour to white British. It's the cultural traditions that are different, like comparing Portuguese people to Swedish people or Swiss people to Celtic people. All white but all different culturally.

@Gilead most of us already are mixed race to some degree or other looking back at our family trees or DNA tests, depends on how far you go back, I guess. Which is why culture is more important than genes.

I think the English are unique in absolutely tearing our own culture apart. I can't think of single nation that ridicules its own traditions in the way that we do.
