She’s jumped on the bandwagon because it’s a hot topic that people feel very strongly about. Same reason Suella Braverman kept on about the boats, pandering to people’s strong feelings. It’s nothing to do with her being a decent person.

Edited

Except she hasn’t jumped in the bandwagon, she’s been saying this for years now.

Amazedtobesane · 03/12/2023 18:01

It was some time in 2021, when she was interviewed by Nick Ferrari, that she said 'Women do have vaginas, Nick' and then this image suddenly started being shared.

Okay, still isn’t indicative of her character. Just because someone says one thing that people agree with it doesn’t mean they are holier than thou. That’s what people tend to do to get people on side.

Who claimed it's indicative of her character? Why does this matter?

lljkk · 03/12/2023 18:37

It's an increasing talking point among right wingers. A great opportunity for culture war votes. Strong appeal to people with rigid religious thinking about morality. So... endorsing intolerance. It's an issue that works well to bring out right wing voters in USA and might have that same effect in UK. It's ok to bully a small minority if you argue they are evil. I suppose it fits with the anti-Democratic and anti-minority rights agenda that has become pervasive in the right wing ideology in recent years.

People are so fickle. I’ve seen it happen loads of times. Someone says something that enough people agree with and feel strongly enough about and suddenly they are great again. As pp said, you could find far better advocates for this. Liz Truss tends to go along with whatever she thinks will make her popular and advance her career.

ElevenSeven · 03/12/2023 18:44

Wanting men to be kept out of women’s spaces is not bullying a small minority or endorsing intolerance.

Honestly, it’s exhausting,

garlicandsapphires · 03/12/2023 18:47

Says a lot when you’ve got Liz Truss fighting your corner!!

PermanentTemporary · 03/12/2023 18:48

Says a lot when a cause is so dumb that a politician as useless as Liz Truss can gain some kind of credibility by stating an obvious fact.

Are you suggesting that banning biological males from female spaces is bullying trans people?

donquixotedelamancha · 03/12/2023 18:51

This has always been her position. It's virtually the only thing she ever got right.

Doesn't make her less of an idiot.

bombastix · 03/12/2023 18:52

Gosh her insight is at a snails pace as per. Even in her own party there are those that do this better and without the baggage of financial incompetence.

PencilsInSpace · 03/12/2023 18:52

Yes, she's not suddenly jumping on the bandwagon. Here's the original clip:

It came up in the leadership elections, it's part of what gave her an edge over Penny Mordaunt. It made her seem sensible to some.

The thing is, women do actually have vaginas, men should not be in women's spaces and there can be no women's spaces if men are allowed into them, and everyone knows this! Everyone!

The difference between people who will say that women have vaginas and those who won't is not the difference between wisdom and ignorance, it's the difference between being willing to state the obvious, and being willing to lie, obfuscate or swerve the truth.

Liz Truss is simply on the reckless side, that's all. But everyone knows.

It's like the little boy in the Emperor's New Clothes - he did an amazing thing by saying what he saw and bursting the bubble of lies, allowing everyone else to speak the truth - but nobody made him emperor. That would have been silly.

Don't be silly. I'm an atheist, the reason I don't think men are women is down to Scientific education, not religion.

3peassuit · 03/12/2023 18:56

That’s probably the one thing I’m in agreement with her on.

lifeturnsonadime · 03/12/2023 16:44

Crikey are you so tribal that you can't see that a person can do a job badly yet be completely right on another issue?

How strange to be so blinkered.

Yes many people are. LT was barely given a chance anyway and was replaced by the useless Sunak but they just parrot what the media tells them; that she somehow destroyed the economy by not wanting to put tax up or borrow yet more money that somehow our children will have to pay back.
True conservatives are very unlikely to support men in women's spaces. It's the left that has brought us that madness, but many Mumsnetters (who generally lean left) are unlikely to see that.

lljkk · 03/12/2023 18:58

Whether it's why MNers dislike transWomen or not, having anti-Trans rights views has gained big support among people who dislike trans people for religious reasons. That's who you get in bed with when you support the anti-Trans movement. Your choice.

But to me yes the anti-Trans movement is obviously a right wing led thing. So that's who your leaders become.

lljkk · 03/12/2023 19:00

Anyway no surprise that Truss joined the antiTrans movement. She's all over the place ideologically, and so are her supporters. Like Braverman saying she's anti-immigrant but then supporting Truss to the hilt otherwise, and Truss is very pro-immigrant (part of Truss's Libertarian agenda).

But it's a kind of Libertarianism that doesnt extend to supporting TransRights. Lots of contradictions.

Usual use of vague language. I don't want blokes in women's changing rooms.
Most of the 'terfs' here are hard core left wingers, who can't see that it's their own side that has betrayed them.

Respecting the reality of biology is not bullying a minority. It is instructive how many so called liberal thinkers have been only to happy to create a bonfire of women’s rights in order to earn woke points. It’s almost as if they think women only exist to serve their narrative. When the Government had to step in to stop rapists being put in women’s prisons was that bullying? When scientists and health professionals are expressing concern about the long term effects of puberty blockers on minors was that bullying? Is concern about a medical and social experiment being carried out on children bullying?

If you think raising concerns about the risk of minors being sterilised is right wing bullying then you are part of the problem not someone on the right side of history.

Come now. Surely you don't think men should access intimate spaces where women and little girls are vulnerable, perhaps naked? That would make you anti-safeguarding.

Men do not have the right to access women's and little girls' intimate spaces. You do understand that, don't you?

ElevenSeven · 03/12/2023 19:06

Allowing men into women’s spaces against the will of women and girls is bullying.

And yes, transwomen are men.
