One opinion that you have that will never waver, no matter what?..

That people who do not attend NHS health-care appointments from nurses, GP services, dentists, therapists...right up to consultant level care should be fined. This would be if they never turned up and never alerted the clinic in advance of their unavailability to free up the slot. Non attendance is a problem for the NHS, and a complete waste of staff resources. I went for a physiotherapy appointment a few days ago. The health care provider mentioned in passing that just 4 of the 11 expected patients had turned up since the clinic opened at 9am (I was seen just after 10am) so she and her colleagues were just stood around waiting.

I had an appointment recently on a Saturday. I needed to cancel that morning due to sickness. But I couldn't. The phone went to answer phone because they are only open (for phone calls) Mon-Fri. Hmm

It's weird to drink cow tit milk that is made for their baby calf.

Why? I genuinely don't see this as weird at all. It's a mammal, the milk is the same type of stuff that is made for our own bodies to consume. And anyway it's surely more normal than actually eating the cow or the calf.

Do you do this in other people's houses?!

No, but in a community resource centre I felt free to IMPOSE my (correct) choice!

We shouldn't have invaded Iraq, Tony Blair is a war criminal and should be on trial.in the Hague.

I knew somebody who had a termination because she lost an argument with her husband and wanted to teach him a lesson.

It's interesting that those against abortions always seem to 'know' someone who has had an abortion and they are, of course, always so open about the reason why they have had the abortion and are always 100% telling the truth.

It really is amazing.

It's not about being clever. Grammar is mostly about logical thinking and common sense- I believe it reflects thought processes. Some linguists call it the grammar instinct - it's also about treating the people you communicate with with respect - making an effort to communicate as clearly as possible is part of acting maturely and thoughtfully.

Edited

It’s not as though grammar is always about clarity of expression, though, is it? I have no trouble understanding someone’s meaning when they split an infinitive or end a sentence on a preposition or use a grocer’s apostrophe.

It really isn't but you've definitely made me realise that THIS is the hill I would die on....

Unless you are from the US, it really IS.

Inastatus · 03/12/2023 19:40

@Mariluisa - no, agreed it’s not really a hill to die on but I do care more about it than ‘the Oxford comma’ 😅

Conspiracy theorists call other people sheep, but actually it's them, and the theories they spread are irresponsible and immoral.

Fair points but then when there are some that actually turned out to be true, that does not help the situation of suppressing the theories.

Oxford comma

As well as the Oxford comma, a comma is used before "and" when it joins two independent clauses, as I said on another post here.

Why do so many people think commas should never be used before "and"?

@lifeturnsonadime

Im not arguing with someone whose opinion towards trans people is based on ‘If we lie and have to call males in women's clothes women’. Seeing so many people chomping at the bit to spread more uninformed hate against trans people in the guise of women’s rights is honestly so disgusting that I’m not going to respond further to any ridiculous anti-trans comments. No matter what silly hypothetical scenario you propose, there’s absolutely nothing that will change my mind on my original point- terfs are silly and trans rights are important. Have a lovely Sunday :)

Over on fwr we do this dance every day.
Each time someone comes along with, "bigots, trans people much maligned, silly terfs etc " and then they flounce off.

No one yet has come up with answers to
How is a man a woman, ever?
What is gender identity?
Why should women budge up again?
What rights do trans people not have?
How would I know if I have a gender identity?
When exactly in the transition process do men 'become' women?
How many women and girls damaged by this ideology is too many? An exact number or rounded up or down is fine.
Are you really ok with a full grown man of any gender identity showering next to a 15 year old girl?

Any answers from you or is it another flounce

Boris Johnson is a massive arsehole.

I like to think I am a reasonable person and I would change my opinion on something if the evidence demanded it, but this is one opinion from which I will not be swayed.

@VanityDiesHard

Not knowing your backstory, you sound like hard work and not someone who is pleasant to be around. If you are always looking for snubs and slights, chances are you'll find them.

It's a pretty reliable litmus test that if someone behaves towards you as if they consider you to be beneath them they are not to be trusted.

I don't go out of my way looking for snubs and slights (and I don't get many honestly because I'm a pretty confident person). But life is too short to accommodate people who are more worried about their place in the hierarchy than they are in humanity. They will always throw you under the bus when they have to.

Love this post. Thankyou! And that attitude is a lot more prevalent and common than people believe.

Askingforafriend101 · 03/12/2023 20:27

The words are doing my head in... two episodes of recent dr who they have said he she they or them when referring to somebody... its PC got nuts. Forms now asking for identity and there's a page of them should just be gender at birth.
For changing rooms there should be separate rooms like mum and baby closed door ones for people who concerned over which to go in or in process of changing or changed

Funnily enough this is similar to an argument we've heard about transwomen in women's spaces 😄

soulfuleyes · 03/12/2023 20:33

VanityDiesHard · 03/12/2023 17:45

My point was, though, that the person who made the initial point was just judging on what she thought someone's motivation was, based perhaps on how they greeted her at a party or something. The phrase 'one strike you're out' seemed overly dramatic, as well. It is one (admirable) thing to resist poor treatment and not be a doormat. It is quite another to be practically on the lookout for people not falling over themselves to be friendly and 'treat you as an equal', and I think it is shortsighted to not see that.

When you've been treated like shit because of where you came from many, many times, despite trying to 'better yourself' you would understand this.

Rainbowshit · 03/12/2023 20:35

@TwigletAddict10

think this website comes across as obsessive, where discussion gets shut down if you don't repeat the same old talking points. YOU are the one trying to shut down people genuinely answering the OP. WHY shouldn't we answer honestly when fighting gender ideology genuinely is the hill we would die on

*It's a lovely place for the already converted but it's not going to help open up the minds of the gen z women in my office, for example. They are not going to engage with this website at all because of it's reputation. Disagree entirely. once they have children they will probably find all roads lead to mumsnet and maybe their minds will change.

Just my opinion. I'm generally all for measured responses in most things so I'm never going to be militant about stuff. If you think that is somehow censoring you then honestly what hope is there for decent discussion on the topic? but you ARE trying to censor. 🤷🏻‍♀️ As I said above why shouldn't we talk about what we feel is a hugely important current issue and the hill we would die on? Why should we restrict our opinions to the section that males have decided we should be restricted to? NO. We're saying NO.

Capitalism is wrong. Hoarding wealth and resources while others starve to death is disgusting. Hoarding natural resources while huge parts of the world who have nothing is shameful and selling it for profit beyond contempt. The British Empire caused much of these problems and Fuck off COP28 and UAE.

💯

That the patriarchy has done a massive number on women by scaremongering out of all proportion on trans issues. I agree that women should have single-sex spaces, but I'm stunned at how much this issue has overtaken all others in discussion about feminism and women's rights. Even on this thread, and definitely on the feminism discussion board, there is far more anger and anxiety about trans people than there is about FGM, public spending cuts that literally endanger the lives of women, the treatment of women by the Taliban, even violence against women and the pitifully low rates of CPS charges against rapists, sex abusers and those who perpetrate violence against women. This isn't whataboutism- I think that a discussion about trans rights is important- But I don't think the obsession with it is helpful to the cause of women. Roe vs Wade was overturned whilst we were distracted by this.

Roe v wade is a USA thing yes? So why are you blaming mostly women in the UK for this?

I dont think it's taken over fwr but even if it has, it's the only place we can discuss the issue.
If you think we should be discussing other things, feel free to start threads.

If you believe women are entitled to single sex spaces, you're as much a terf as any of us.

DiamandaTheGreat · 03/12/2023 21:30
  1. It is unwise to befriend people you work with on social media.
  2. A coat with no hood (in the UK) is a waster of money.

(Not RTFT but am going to go in strong and say that these are the dullest hills so far.)
