Anyone know where Canadian cheddar went?

Don’t you just hate it when you love a product and then it disappears?

My stepmom used to make THE best cheese sauce and said her secret weapon was Canadian cheddar so I became a convert. It used to be in all the supermarkets (UK) and then it was only Morrisons but now it’s nowhere to be found and has been like that for a few years.

Does anyone know where to find Canadian Cheddar in the UK or why it disappeared from the shops.?

Truuuuuly not trying to shoehorn, but could it be Brexit, in that pre-Brexit Canada would have had a trade agreement with the EU which we would have been a part of, but now we are excluded from it?
This is only a guess.

Is Cheddar is a protected characteristic like Champagne or Eccles cakes Cornish Pasty etc. . So the cheese would have to be made in Cheddar to be called Cheddar. Could be wrong but it makes sense to me. Maybe they ship Canadian milk to cheddar but carbon footprint would be terrible.

Canadian cheddar was lovely - so cheesy!

I usually buy Waitrose cheddar now. The number 6 strength, I think it is. It’s also very good. Strong flavour but not too sharp.

God I wish I could get the stuff over here in Europe. Used to buy it all the time living in California. The sharp, artisan version. Soooooo good.

No, hardly any cheddar is made in Cheddar. The ship had already long sailed with that one. I think there is West Country Farmhouse Cheddar or something similarly specific (?) which is protected, but nobody cares unfortunately and any old cheese can be called cheddar even if it's nothing like cheddar at all.

West Country Farmhouse Cheddar has protected designation of origin. Any other cheddar made anywhere else can also be called cheddar.

Agree, I think cheddar is a protected brand.

Maybe Canadian cheese is still around but called something else.

Or try real cheddar instead.

I've been able to get a Canadian cheddar from Tesco Finest in the last year. However I think the closest to what I used to buy (Canadian cheddar from Tesco) is Cathedral City Vintage.

I don't think I've seen Canadian cheddar for donkeys years, not sure if this one is down to brexit. It may be that during the EU years we were getting more cheeses from Europe, but also British cheeses have got so much better in the last few decades. Some of the mature cheddars, especially the ones with a bit of crunch, are excellent. It always was a bit coals to Newcastle to be importing cheddar, we really don't need to be transporting it across the Atlantic.

I remember this cheese and it was delicious , nutty and smooth.
I don't mind Cathedral city strong, but it's not the same.
