Anyone know where Canadian cheddar went?

Don’t you just hate it when you love a product and then it disappears?

My stepmom used to make THE best cheese sauce and said her secret weapon was Canadian cheddar so I became a convert. It used to be in all the supermarkets (UK) and then it was only Morrisons but now it’s nowhere to be found and has been like that for a few years.

Does anyone know where to find Canadian Cheddar in the UK or why it disappeared from the shops.?

Waves from Canada!

Can’t say I’ve seen much in this bit of Canada. Mind you, I haven’t specifically looked for it. I’m grocery shopping tomorrow, so I will have a look.

Will trade for scotch eggs and a decent pork pie!

Bloody stupid Brexit. M&S have the best cheddar. Cornish Cruncher in the black wrapper.

WillowTit · 08/12/2023 06:49

You must not buy a lot of cheese! We must have at least 15 varieties of Canadian cheddar in my local Canadian grocery store. Not that this helps the OP in any way!

OrigamiOwl · 08/12/2023 07:30

My DH's nan always had Canadian cheddar in for Christmas. I've I've been looking for years to get some for him, as this seems to be a core memory for him. Whenever the supermarkets put their christmas cheese selection I have a speculative look!
It was definitely well before Brexit that I started looking for it tho, so not convinced it's solely connected with that.

Never mind Canadian cheddar, there used to be an Isle of Man one with black pepper which was delicious. Where's that gone? And where's the Swaledale?

I can't find a Tunis cake anywhere this year
Not tried Tesco yet. The ones on line are too expensive and loads to deliver
I Do like a nice cheddar , about the only cheese I really love

I had to look that up as I've never heard of a Tunis cake before (I'm in my 60s). Maybe a regional thing?

the80sweregreat · 08/12/2023 09:07

No, it's normally sold in Sainsbury's/ tesco etc
You can make one, but I'm useless at cakes ( and baking in general)
The chocolate on it is lovely with marzipan fruits on top

Bloody stupid Brexit.

There doesn’t appear to be any Brexit link.

Importing to the UK
Rules for importing from Canada to the UK are largely unchanged as Canada was outside of the EU Customs domain previous to Brexit in any event.

I doubt it’s Brexit. Lack of demand is more likely.

Off the point, but protected geographical designation for food and drink is a right old racket. It just creates cartels and increases prices without any good reason.

Not all artisan cheese makers will be big enough to supply supermarkets and may not need or want to. Some presumably supply regionally - I think I see more Lancashire cheeses in my local supermarkets than I would elsewhere.

ehb102 · 08/12/2023 09:57

It definitely wasn't Brexit. It was way before. Years before. Trust me, this has been a big thing in my life
I've eaten every supermarket sharp cheddar I can find and that combination of fattiness and sharpness is hard to find.

How does M&S Cornish Cruncher (suggested by a pp above) measure up?

StinkyWizzleteets · 09/12/2023 00:06

Elderflower14 · 07/12/2023 20:46

The only one I saw online was £291.60 with £7.95 p&p
Do you like it that much??!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 Here 🤯 🤯 🤯 🤯

You know if I had the money I absolutely would! Thanks for the dream fodder 😂

Canadian cheddar was lovely - so cheesy!

I usually buy Waitrose cheddar now. The number 6 strength, I think it is. It’s also very good. Strong flavour but not too sharp.

I do t have a Waitrose near but might get relative to bring some with them at Christmas. Thanks!

I’m Canadian and my local cheese place ran out of a few of their staples and it’s taking literal years for them to make enough to age it properly

it’s the saddest

StinkyWizzleteets · 09/12/2023 00:11

@LakeTiticaca oh yeah. Irish cheddar was great too. Hmmm a trip to Ireland definitely more affordable than to Canada

@ehb102 that is a lovely cheese but doesn’t taste as good melted as Canadian. I haven’t seen Canadian in Tesco in decades. I sadly still look for it with hope

Roselilly36 · 09/12/2023 04:33

Yes, now you mention it, where has it gone? I used to buy this, not seen it in years, come to think about it. I liked it, we just buy mature cheddar now.

CobraChicken · 09/12/2023 04:48

Definitely don't bother getting any Canadians or Brits visiting Canada to bring any over for you. I always used to buy Canadian Cheddar before emigrating to Canada, but the stuff they sell here, in Canada, is just crap! Even the extra mature stuff is mild.

Balderson 2yr or 5yr aged is about the only widely available Canadian Cheddar brand that actually tastes cheesy. I'm sure there will be far better ones available in specialty cheese stores, but supermarket/pre-packaged Canadian Cheddar, having tried loads of different ones, from Toronto to Vancouver, is all disappointing 😞
