I love love love Paul McCartney but HATE Wonderful Xmastime with a vengeance! The Band Aid hate gets trotted out every year, gets very predictable - their hearts were in the right place.

LlynTegid · 01/12/2023 17:05

Band Aid is dated I agree.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/12/2023 17:05

War is over and wonderful Xmas time.
Both fucking Hideous.

I don't mind hearing Jona Lewie. I like hearing Boney M and Greg Lake. Everything else can take a running jump but Mariah Carey and East 17 MUST be first and second respectively in the queue.

Live Aid or Band Aid whatever- Do they know its Christmas?

Patronising crap.

Having lived in Africa in the 80s yes, we did know it was fucking Christmas and we had a great time…oh and we were happy there wasn't snow.
Africa is not a country.
Africa is not Ethiopia in the 80s.
Other religions exist.
Only white singers were available to sing lead apparently.

At the time, even my mother said scathingly “of course they know it’s Christmas, thousands of them are Christians!”

Volbeat · 01/12/2023 17:49

I heard "chestnuts roasting on an open fire..." on the car radio driving home from work before. Immediately swapped chestnuts with Liz Truss. Thank you to whoever posted that gem on this thread 😂😂

I'll never forget my mum standing in the bank asking to give £10 to LiveAid...she also bought the single the previous Christmas as a present for my sister. She had very, very little money, working as a seamstress. I have fond memories of the song and how people poured out what they had to help...even if it ultimately didn't go where they thought.

'I've only been hearing it recently, but Joni Mitchell's River can get in the bin too.'

Oh the Christmas squad can get their hands off that one! Such a beautiful song, so very sad

'Paul McCartney and frogs chorus probably would get a load of votes, but I loved it as a kid'

Me too! Still love it now

I love all McCartney's songs that get played at Christmas....The Wings one, the Frog one and the pipes one. No wonder he's a multi millionaire and I bet he makes most of it in December!

Glad that Elton John "Step Into Christmas" is on others Bin List , cannot abide it .

It's awful. I do like the one he did with Sheeran though.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 01/12/2023 18:01

@FinallyFinalGirl - exactly re Band Aid. I was 11 when it came out and everyone was so desperate to try and help. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

GodDammitCecil · 01/12/2023 18:07

I was today year’s old when I realised Wonderful Christmas Time was sung by Paul McCartney… Shock

Shocker of a song.

My all time favourite (non-carol) Christmas song is Last Christmas - it came out when I was 10 or 11, I loved Wham, my birthday is a week before Christmas, and I always associate it with my birthday.

SirChenjins · 01/12/2023 18:09

Wonderful Christmas Time - I switch it off every time it comes on. Quite how such a talented songwriter as Paul McCartney came up with that drivel I don’t know.

BridgetRandomfuck · 01/12/2023 18:17

When I was a teenager back in the 90s I worked in the Body Shop over the Xmas period, and we had Xmas songs playing on loop. You eventually tuned them out, so there’s really not one that you currently hear that I can’t stand. However, the compilation we had had a version of Frosty the Snowman sung by Alvin and the Chipmunks - oh my god, I haven’t heard it for 25 years, but I think I would go on a rampage if I heard it again!

the80sweregreat · 01/12/2023 18:36

One Christmas Eve in the supermarket Auld lang syne started up and was quickly stopped ! Lol

Oh my goodness, this, 100 times over. I can't stand how patronising it is. I can't believe it got re relaunched too 🤦‍♀️

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/12/2023 18:54

LadBaby - I cannot say if I love them or hate them:
I don't think I've heard any of the last 5 Christmas no.1 hits from them, or if I have they gone Pffft over the top of my head .
But they aren't releasing a single this year .

TheMarzipanDildo · 01/12/2023 18:57

The Waitresses’ one is my favourite, along with Stop the Cavalry and Fairytale of New York.

Wonderful Christmastime is bad, but nice and jolly too and I do like Paul.

TheMarzipanDildo · 01/12/2023 19:00

WhyMeWhyNowWhyNot · 01/12/2023 16:46

@Lottapianos totally agree - River is a stunning song! Not one to be ruined by Christmas 🥰

Saviour’s Day wins for me - dreadful. “White Wine in the Sun” is hands down the best Christmas song ever written and I will not hear otherwise 😜😄.

Love White Wine in the Sun.

Inkanta · 01/12/2023 19:06

"Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" Bing Crosby and David Bowie

LifeofBrienne · 01/12/2023 19:19

I’m an atheist but find almost all secular Christmas songs awful and cringey, despite a soft spot for a couple of them (George Michael!).
Give me traditional carols with full on organ and descant or a crisp clear chamber choir singing music that makes me think of echoing cathedrals or midwinter frosty fields.

PrancerandDancer · 01/12/2023 19:25

I don't like Buble..... And I love Christmas.

Also yes to Baby its Cold Outside (apart from when Buddy sings it in Elf) and Santa Baby.

Love love love Mariah, Elton and Wham though!

Looking back, it was so manipulative. But people had no idea. It was the first of its kind.

And only men! The women were backing singers only!

Know our place!

TheTecknician · 01/12/2023 19:52

I fear many people don't understand what went on behind the scenes behind Do They Know It's Christmas? A rush release was essential in order to maximise pre-Christmas sales. An original song was needed in order to maximise publishing royalties so the song had to be written in a hurry. No time to fart about with deeply meaningful lyrics and perfect rhyme and rhythm. And Midge Ure and Bob Geldof had only 24 hours studio time in which to gather all the performers, rehearse, record all the vocals and lay down the backing track. Incidentally, only three musicians contributed to the final mix. Finally, everybody involved was doing it free of charge. I concede no careers were harmed! Even HM Government backed down on the VAT angle. I'm not a big fan of the record but I'd defy even the staunchest cynic to not be impressed by the remarkable effort involved in the project. The sneers and ignorance still get up my nose 39 years later.
