This is really important..watermelon doesn’t taste of anything?

I know it’s not quite the season but just had watermelon again but it tastes of nothing?? I’ve tried it several times and I just cant discern any flavour at all. Even watermelon flavoured things like jelly beans taste if nothing to me. Anyone else or am I a medical miracle?

In season, I think it's lovely.

But forced fruit and veg is always a disappointment imo.

Hellocatshome · 29/11/2023 21:24

Watermelon tastes of disappointment.

froginawell · 29/11/2023 21:24

What @Notinmylifethyme said.

But I am also the wrong person to ask as I find water generally quite strongly tasting and delicious

It gets the water bit right, it's the melon bit where it falls apart.

SurelySmartie · 29/11/2023 21:25

I think you can be lucky or unlucky with watermelons. Sometimes they are sweet and flavoursome. Others are completely tasteless.

Flyhigher · 29/11/2023 21:26

It has a great flavour. Subtle but delicious. Either it's forced fruit. Or your taste buds don't like it. You like really strong flavours. Try some in water. Tastes amazing in the summer.

Sidebeforeself · 29/11/2023 21:28

Wouldn’t some in water..errr ..water it down?

Can you taste cucumber, OP? They’re in the same family.

I loooove watermelon. Eat it 3-4 times a week.

Cheeseplantalltheway · 29/11/2023 21:33

Watermelon in season in a country in which they are grown are delicious.

Usually disappointing in the UK.

CorvusPurpureus · 29/11/2023 21:34

Pick the seeds out, & blitz what's left with tequila, lime juice, fresh chilli & ice.

Serve in a coupe or frankly any glass which you've rimmed with the squeezed lime halves, then twirled through a plate of equal parts salt, sugar & chilli flakes.

If you still can't taste it, you're probably dead...but seriously, watermelon in late November?

theduchessofspork · 29/11/2023 21:36

They are a bit like a bad squash (cordial not vegetable) IMO. The texture is nice though.

Flyhigher · 29/11/2023 21:37

@Sidebeforeself yes. It flavours water beautifully to drink. It's very subtle. But delicious. It might just be a bad melon in November. Try it again in summer. But it does flavour water in a delicious way.

Sidebeforeself · 29/11/2023 21:41

Yes I absolutely love cucumber. And other melon types

LBFseBrom · 29/11/2023 21:44

I like watermelon, it is very refreshing.

motherofawhirlwind · 29/11/2023 21:50

I can't taste blueberries. Totally nothing wastes of space.

booksandbrooks · 29/11/2023 21:51

Watermelon is delicious and has a very unique taste, watermelon flavoured things are vile.

spookehtooth · 29/11/2023 21:58

I love it but that's for the texture and moisture. You can make a curry with it, if you want more flavour. Put it in late so it gets warm, acquires flavour but retains the texture

Same here. I don't understand why they are so popular.

flowerchild2000 · 29/11/2023 22:32

Visit the US South sometime and try a local one. They are the size of a small child and taste amazing! I've tried them in other places and either the texture is bad or the taste is lacking.

Sidebeforeself · 29/11/2023 22:42

Yes I’ve had is in the States before too. Wonder if some people just cant taste it? Like how some people cant eat coriander because they say it tastes of soap but I don’t get that at all!

OP posts:
Amandasummers · 29/11/2023 22:46

Why don’t people read the op 🫣

all these suggestions of bad watermelon etc. OP has literally said, she can’t taste ANYTHING watermelon flavoured, if she puts a watermelon jelly bean in her mouth, she can’t taste it.

she wants to know if this is a thing. She doesn’t want other suggestions for how to eat watermelon, or to know whether other posters like watermelon etc etc. the thread has massively detailed for zero reason other than sheer laziness of reading a whole OP

motherofawhirlwind · 29/11/2023 21:50

I can't taste blueberries. Totally nothing wastes of space.

This is another food that should be eaten in season where they grow, never from a store.

flowerchild2000 · 29/11/2023 22:48

I grew up on a farm, became totally spoiled on fresh fruit & veg straight from the vine/dirt. There's a lot of foods I won't eat from a store. They taste nothing like they should! It's sad that's the world we live in.

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 29/11/2023 22:50

You’re getting watermelon from the wrong place.

ConflictedCheetah · 29/11/2023 22:53

I'm like this with parsley OP. I just don't think it tastes of anything. My DH thinks I'm mad.
