This is really important..watermelon doesn’t taste of anything?

I know it’s not quite the season but just had watermelon again but it tastes of nothing?? I’ve tried it several times and I just cant discern any flavour at all. Even watermelon flavoured things like jelly beans taste if nothing to me. Anyone else or am I a medical miracle?

This is another food that should be eaten in season where they grow, never from a store.

My DH has grown them on his allotment. They still don't taste of much. He grows raspberries, blackberries, red currants, blackcurrants, gooseberries, all delicious. Blueberries not so much.

Sidebeforeself · 29/11/2023 22:55

Thanks @Amandasummers ! @IwishIdidntlikesugar I don’t get it from one place..it’s every time I have ever tried it. I’ve often thought it was just me so I thought I’d ask…NB Cannabis doesn’t affect me either .. I think I may have some sort of weird taste/sensation deficit!!

Once I realised watermelon just tastes of slightly sweet cucumber, it was ruined for me. But no great loss tbh.

If you are in the UK you won't be getting enough sun. They need lots of son, acidic soil, and humidity to taste nice.

MsJuniper · 29/11/2023 22:59

It's much better than the other types of melon which all taste of death to me.

Manchester to be exact. It explains a lot.😁

The first year he grew the blueberries outside. Not great. Second year in the polytunnel, a bit better. Maybe we'll try moving to Spain, see if that helps.😊

Mombie · 29/11/2023 23:05

Watermelon flavoured anything is just ‘slightly sweet water’ taste which is similar but not the same as supermarket watermelon. Real watermelons are amazing and your best bet is to buy from Asian/Turkish stores in the summer. Also buy boxes of yellow mangoes from Asian supermarkets because the big green ones taste like nothing in comparison.

OP I always find it weird when artificial fruit flavouring tastes nothing like the real thing. For example, there is a generic strawberry taste in sweets and yoghurt which has a similar smell to actual strawberries but doesn’t taste like strawberry. Actual strawberries smell good but taste quite nothingy to me!

I once bought a watermelon. Didn't use it and it was on the side for about 10 days.

One night we heard a big bang in the kitchen and a hissing sound.

The melon had deteriorated inside its hard shell, started to ferment, and the pressure burst it open.

The juice was everywhere and it stank.of high watermelon, if there's such a thing.

To make it worse it was on a join of our kitchen worksurface, and had leached down into that cupboard! Sugar, flour, dry goods....lots to throw out whilst we felt like throwing up from.the smell.

Exploding watermelons are a thing! Just be careful!

Well Harry Style's sure thinks watermelon tastes of something...

Deathraystare · 01/12/2023 10:14

Sadly, most exotic fruit tastes of nothing in UK (if you are from there). I prefer water melon to the other melons that tastes of potato but I ate loads of water melon in Greece where it actually had a taste.. The same was true of the pomegranates I had in Morocco. I haven't had one since in UK.

kezzykicks · 01/12/2023 10:17

In hot weather watermelons are my favourite thing to eat. I imagine they taste disappointing in this weather though.

INeedNewShoes · 01/12/2023 10:43

The only watermelon I've ever had that was worth eating was on a Caribbean island. It had a beautiful flavour and perfect juicy/soft yet bit-of-crunch texture.

Neelsplace · 01/12/2023 10:50

Have you ever tried watermelon pop op? You can find it in lots of Eastern European supermarkets. It’s highly flavoured (very ripe sugary watermelon), it would be surprising if you didn’t get some flavour from it. To me the taste of WM is so distinctive- I hate it and I hate watermelon scented products too. Can you smell watermelon stuff, like shower gel etc?
it could be a mad medical discovery , the watermelon/ cannabis connection! You could be on the verge of a major neurobiology discovery !

DrNo007 · 01/12/2023 10:55

If you go to a country where they are grown, like Cyprus, you can buy them and eat them when they are ripe. Then they are delicious. But I don’t buy much warm-climate fruit in the UK as we get stuff that is picked unripe so it can be transported and stored. By promoting and following this system the supermarkets have managed to convince Brits that most fruit and veg tastes of absolutely nothing.

TheCatfordCat · 01/12/2023 11:34

Once took a holiday in Croatia. Had a slice of Watermelon there. It tasted melon-y. I find most watermelons imported to the UK taste of nothing.

bellac11 · 01/12/2023 11:36

Even in countries where they grow them and you buy them in season, tasteless

Well not exactly, I find they have a sort of mild plastic taste.

Total let down.

Much prefer cucumber

Waitingfordoggo · 01/12/2023 11:40

I can take it or leave it really but it does have a taste for me. I like it chopped up with feta and mint.

AgnesX · 01/12/2023 11:42

I adore watermelon but...like most fruit....if it's out of season or poor quality it's tasteless.

Jason118 · 01/12/2023 11:44

You are absolutely on the money. In the same way that cottage cheese tastes of nothing. Maybe a new thread needed for that!

CurlewKate · 01/12/2023 11:44

Even a mediocre watermelon is better than no watermelon.

TheSandgroper · 01/12/2023 12:16

Australian here. I was just thinking last summer that the watermelon I buy now isn’t a patch on the flavour of watermelon in my childhood. Back then it was amazing.

wineoclock90 · 01/12/2023 12:18

Love watermelon

IvorTheEngineDriver · 01/12/2023 12:20

I agree OP. My DW loves them but they taste of nothing to me.
