I know it’s not quite the season but just had watermelon again but it tastes of nothing?? I’ve tried it several times and I just cant discern any flavour at all. Even watermelon flavoured things like jelly beans taste if nothing to me. Anyone else or am I a medical miracle?

It definitely has a flavour. Some watermelons stronger than others. I do buy them a lot! watermelon flavour stuff is also yum!

HoppingPavlova · 01/12/2023 12:27

Pick the seeds out, & blitz what's left with tequila, lime juice, fresh chilli & ice

or buy seedless watermelon? I don’t think I’ve even seen anything other than seedless for at least the last 20 years. I remember thinking when my kids were little how lucky they were not to know watermelon with seeds like I had as a kid, where you constantly had to spit the bloody things out.

I've never seen a seedless watermelon!

A single ripe, red slice of watermelon enjoyed in the tropics somewhere after a day out in the sun? Wonderful.

Anything else - bleugh. And double bleugh to whoever suggested watermelon flavoured soda pop.

Oh Im glad it’s not just me. Yes Im in the UK and have had it abroad and have never got any taste from it. I love the look of it and really wish I could taste what everyone else does!

Frozen watermelon in Rome in summertime tastes of deliciousness.

HoppingPavlova · 01/12/2023 14:28

@iknowimcoming I've never seen a seedless watermelon!

that’s so bizarre, as it’s all we have here now. Let’s face it, who’s going to buy one with seeds next to one without seeds?

They are generally full of flavour, but if you start to get them outside of season then they definitely start to taste bland. We would probably eat a whole watermelon a week in summer , but that’s a packed household.

Rollinghill · 01/12/2023 14:33

I agree OP. Tasteless. Waste of food especially when other melons can be deliciously sweet and flavourful.

MurielThrockmorton · 01/12/2023 15:07

Might be a genetic thing going on, we hate cucumber in our family and think it taste really strong, but other people say to us, it doesn't taste of anything. I can taste when a cucumber has just been waved next to something! I googled it there apparently is a genetic component to how cucumber tastes, I don't like watermelon for the same reason. www.theurbanlist.com/a-list/20-things-youll-only-understand-if-you-hate-cucumber

Once I realised watermelon just tastes of slightly sweet cucumber, it was ruined for me. But no great loss tbh.

That's what it tastes like to me also.

I'm sure different people have different receptors and experience tastes differently. It's famous with sprouts - some people can detect a bitterness that other people are less aware of. And apparently being a "super taster" can lead to people rejecting a lot of foods. So why wouldn't some people naturally lack the receptors for some flavours/smells? COVID taught us that losing some receptors temporarily can make previously nice foods taste awful.

I love watermelon, it's one of my favourites. My husband doesn't see the point of it. He gets a lot less flavour complexity out of food than I do but I don't know if that's due to restricted diet as a child or just genetics, like not being able to roll your tongue.

See I told you it was a really important topic! There’s scientific research being quoted and everything!

I’m sorry only about two people seem to have read your thread correctly but I’m interested. Have you always had it? Is there anyone else on internet saying the same? And now I’m interested to know if anyone has this with other flavours!

Sidebeforeself · 01/12/2023 17:53

Yes I have never known the taste of watermelon. It just tastes like an ice cube to me but not as hard if that makes sense

Psychoticbreak · 01/12/2023 18:38

NO time to read other replies but I like watermelon and like it better with a tiny bit of salt on it, give that a try.
I once read that people who say they like cucumber cant actually taste it as it has a weird taste. To me it tastes like water unless it is with cheese.

96waystobehappy · 01/12/2023 19:05

Do you think your sweet tastebuds may be dampened down more than other people? As others have said, it has not much flavour (in uk anyway) so maybe you taste everything sweet different to other people but it becomes more noticeable in watermelon as it is so weak? Sweets usually have stronger artificial taste though so not sure that will be it!?

96waystobehappy · 01/12/2023 19:06

Need to taste a watermelon sweet now. Can only think of jelly babies and im
sure taste quite strong - ish

CesareBorgia · 01/12/2023 19:07

Yes - it's like cucumber.

96waystobehappy · 01/12/2023 19:08

One more question: can you smell it? Real watermelon and artificial scents of water melon? I’m over invested as had that thing where smell went weird with Covid (awful experience) so now find smell and taste and interesting subject

3luckystars · 01/12/2023 19:09

Watermelon Vodka is great!

NoNameisGoodEnough · 01/12/2023 19:40

It is hideous. Enjoy not tasting.
