I want to get tickets for a show for DH for Christmas. He's not into traditional musical style shows and friend has suggested this? I know absolutely nothing about it so if you've seen it, is it good? Funny? Rude? Sad? Thanks!

It's ok. It didn't live up to the hype as far as I was concerned, especially given the very expensive tickets.
What spoilt it most for me was the large number of excitable fans of the show who had obviously seen it many times and sang along (loudly) to all the musical numbers. And jumped around in their seats. There also seemed to be quite a few baffling in-jokes expressly for these people who laughed uproariously.
But I admit to being a bit curmudgeonly.
On the plus side it is quite funny and lively. The rudeness didn't bother me.

By the title I thought you meant literally and I was going to say special underwear and funny goggles lol

PS I really liked Life of Brian, and still do.

I didn't enjoy it and I'm not easily offended or care about swearing. The premise of the story was funny and I liked the piss taking but the mention of fucking babies would never be funny to me. Also, I took my mum who is more easily offended so that definitely ruined the vibe. The music and singing were good though. I wouldn't go to see it again.

TwinklingLightsEverywhere · 25/12/2023 21:53

It's one of my favourites, so well done.

I'm not one to be offended on behalf of others but I was pretty close to walking out at the beginning, and a few people did. Singing 'f you god' and talking about finding a baby to f* to cure aids stuck with me and most others I've spoken to.

I was not at all offended on behalf of the morons, they took out an ad in the program and were on the street outside with a banner 'you've seen the show now read the book', fab attitude.

Unfortunate typo there, @TwinklingLightsEverywhere !

The portrayal of Africa is what made me uncomfortable. It seemed like a lazy stereotype as imagined by Americans who have never been. It didn't seem as though they had done any real research or spent time in Uganda.

This is in stark contrast with the Mormon aspect which did seem well researched and factual (not that I'm an expert but I had a Mormon colleague who had done the missionary stuff and we discussed it. )

Tangled123 · 26/12/2023 00:21

I saw it a few years ago, so can’t remember specifics, but I remember that I really enjoyed it. I would see it again if I had the chance.

It is a lazy stereotype......that's the joke.
The Mormons go to Africa and perceive themselves as the white saviours of the poor Africans.
But the joke is on them, the audience is laughing at the Americans not the Africans.

I really didn’t think it was that funny , lots of childish boobies humour - wouldn’t see it again

I must be one of the only people I know who didn't like it. Swearing didn't bother me at all though and I wasn't offended. Just didn't laugh much.

I’m the same. I saw it in NewYork a couple of weeks ago and just didn’t find it funny. I’m open minded, don t mind swearing, it takes a lot to offend me, and am a bit anti-woke, but I just didn’t find it funny. But then South Park doesn’t make me laugh either

14Q · 26/12/2023 17:26

People who are saying that it's not for people who are easily offended are being optimistic. I think it's actually offensive. Not so much about Mormons but about the beliefs of Ugandans. There are jokes about Ugandans with aids and about them having sex with babies and frogs to rid themselves of 'the aids' etc etc. The swearing didn't bother me at all.

I was genuinely shocked. There seemed to be so many bad racist stereotypes.

Having said that I did laugh and I enjoyed a lot of it. I think it was well done and preformed well. it was a bit much though.

We wondered what the reaction would be if the religion was something other than Mormon,

Maybe decide for yourself.

This is direct cut and paste from the script

"Mafala: Oh really? Well take this fucking asshole Mutumbo here. He got caught last week trying to rape a baby.
Price: What?? Why??
Mafala: Some people in his tribe believe that having sex with a virgin will cure their AIDS. There aern't many virgins left, sooo, some of them are turning to babies.
Cunningham: But that's horrible!
Mafala: I know!
Ugandans: Hasa diga eebowai.
Mafala: Here's the butcher, he has AIDS
Here's the teacher, she has AIDS
Here's the doctor, he has AIDS
Here's my daughter, she has a___
Wonderful disposition
She's all I have left in the world
And if either of you lays a hand on her...
I will give you my AIDS!
Ugandans: If you don't like what we say, try living here a couple days.
Watch all your friends and family die! Hasa diga eebowai!
Men: Fuuuck you!
Ugandans: Fuck! You!
Women: Hasa diga eebowai! [Price and Cunningham sit on the ground now]
Ugandans: Fuck you God in the ass, mouth and cunt-uh!
