I want to get tickets for a show for DH for Christmas. He's not into traditional musical style shows and friend has suggested this? I know absolutely nothing about it so if you've seen it, is it good? Funny? Rude? Sad? Thanks!

it's fantastic.
a bit crass in parts.

LoveBluey · 26/11/2023 11:17

Funny, rude, irreverent. Not for those easily offended but a good choice if you don't like the more traditional musicals.
I've seen it twice and it's up there with my faves.

Mrsjayy · 26/11/2023 11:17

its very sweary and rude it's written by the guys who did south park so you know. I wasn't keen I know my Dd loves it.

It's very, very funny, very rude and not for the easily offended. It's by the writers of South Park, which gives you a clue. I loved it but it's not for everyone.

NuffSaidSam · 26/11/2023 11:19

It's funny and incredibly rude. It's not for the easily offended. It's probably not for you if you're religious and precious about it.

But it's very good.

mynameiscalypso · 26/11/2023 11:21

My parents hate musicals and quite liked it. It's funny in parts but is a bit long. My musical-hating parents preferred Hamilton.

IGotItFromAgnes · 26/11/2023 11:24

I enjoyed most of it but, as with South Park, there were a couple of bits I did think went too far.

It’s not something I would give as a surprise unless you’re very, very sure the person isn’t going to be offended. I’d have a listen to some of the soundtrack before deciding.

Okbyethen · 26/11/2023 11:26

It's excellent - definitely not for the easily offended though. As above, rude and sweary, but so funny!
My husband hates musicals but loved the Book of Mormon!

Iloveraccoons · 26/11/2023 11:30

Echo all the above, I went in blind and they say "cunt" in the first maybeeee 12 minutes which I was very taken aback by but I've seen it three times now and it's my favourite!

hby9628 · 26/11/2023 11:32

I was absolutely shocked the first time I saw it. It's actually turned out to be my favourite musical and I've just booked to go to see it for the third time. It's brilliant. You could listen to the sound track to get a feel for the content before you book.

usernotfound0000 · 26/11/2023 11:35

Rude and not for the easily offended but up there with one of my favourite musicals. Seen it twice now.

MysweetAudrina · 26/11/2023 11:39

As an ex Mormon I found it hilarious.

Titsywoo · 26/11/2023 11:40

It's brilliant. Very rude I guess but I took my 15 year old and he loved it.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 26/11/2023 11:42

It's awful. And I love musicals usually, don't mind swearing, but I absolutely hated this.

SABM10 · 26/11/2023 11:43

I tried this as I've really never liked musicals at all and thought if anything can convert me, this would be it.

I personally didn't love it - it was funny in parts but I think I've now accepted I just really, really don't like musicals and the laughs didnt make up for the song and dance routines 😅. If your DH doesn't have very strong feelings about musicals then give it a go. Several friends who have a similar sense of humour to me (but without the musicals hatred!) absolutely loved it.

greyhairnomore · 26/11/2023 11:43

I must be one of the only people I know who didn't like it. Swearing didn't bother me at all though and I wasn't offended. Just didn't laugh much.

Catsonskis · 26/11/2023 11:43

See I hated it, I’m not bothered by rudeness or crass or the casual use of the c word. But I do love musicals and I think I missed the classic ballads and love stories etc. that being said I love Avenue Q which I’d heard had a similar vibe

it was funny, in a South Park way. But the story was a bit meh, and to be honest I can’t remember what the plot was now. I wanted to love it as people rave about it (clearly from this thread). Some good numbers but other than the opening song I’ve forgotten them all.

but in its defence, I saw it in about 35 degree heat in Liverpool, 37 weeks pregnant and all the cast were red faced they were so hot, I really felt for them. It was unbarably hot for me as the audience can’t imagine how the cast felt!

Squiggles23 · 26/11/2023 11:44

It’s a piss take on Mormons/missionaries and so I would avoid if you are religious. But it’s so funny, I loved it.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/11/2023 11:45

My husband hates musicals but loved the Book of Mormon!

Mine likewise. He very much enjoyed The Producers too.

Leastwise... he'd say he doesn't like musicals but I'm not entirely convinced. I have to remind him when we're looking for something to watch that actually he really enjoys the occasional romcom. Wonder if there's other shows I should try him on?

Hibernatalie · 26/11/2023 11:47

Use South Park as a marker of the type of humour. It is a musical, but you don't need to be into musicals to love it.

MrsJellybee · 26/11/2023 11:49

The only musical my husband likes.

I laughed so hard I thought I might need oxygen. Not for the easily-offended. It’s Life of Brian x 1,000.

Puffypuffin · 26/11/2023 19:04

Well the Life of Brian is his all time favourite film so I reckon he would love it. 🤣

OP posts:
Squiggles23 · 26/11/2023 19:25

Yes he will then 😂

nottodaytomorrow · 26/11/2023 19:38

Its amazing!

StrawberryJellyBelly · 26/11/2023 19:39

The funniest thing I’ve seen on stage.
