I want to get tickets for a show for DH for Christmas. He's not into traditional musical style shows and friend has suggested this? I know absolutely nothing about it so if you've seen it, is it good? Funny? Rude? Sad? Thanks!

Also ex Mormon here and thought it was incredible. It's incredibly rude and really offensive but to everyone. Songs about clits, Aids, fucking babies, Jesus having sex with Satan etc. It's so so funny and also has some fantastic tunes - loved it.

EllaMenopee · 26/11/2023 19:52

I found it very dated. I can understand how it was groundbreaking when first released but I thought it was a bit long in the tooth at this stage.

WonkyFeelings · 26/11/2023 19:53

So rude and so, so funny.

There are some hilarious parts, and the songs are brilliant, but I did find some of the depictions of Africa pretty racist and wouldn't go and see it again for that reason.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 26/11/2023 20:33

Basically it's South Park on stage!

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 26/11/2023 20:34

If easily offended then I wouldn't go!
My husband hates musicals but likes south park and liked this!

Brandyginger · 26/11/2023 20:38

I found it unfunny and racist. I found one review from years ago who called it out and I completely agree with it. I don’t mind swearing, I have terrible language myself and I like South Park (by way of example). It was just very very unfunny and offensive to “africans”.

the choreography of the dance routines was spectacular, however. It’s a high quality production otherwise!

MichaelBurnhamFan · 26/11/2023 21:51

I saw it just before the first lockdown.
It’s crass and very rude but some of the the songs are clever and I enjoyed most of it. Some of it is very racist and I suspect will have had to be changed as sensitivities have changed. Otherwise it’s probably aged badly.

HermioneWeasley · 26/11/2023 21:53

I laughed so hard I had to use my inhaler.

ACynicalDad · 26/11/2023 22:01

So some Mormons go on gap years to try to spread the faith and that’s the basis of the plot. It’s very easy to ridicule and they do it wonderfully. If you are happy to watch religion being ripped apart it’s really fantastic. I have two friends that are priests, one would see it as a guilty pleasure, I think the other would steer clear.

PeskyPotato · 26/11/2023 22:04

Took my 14 year old daughter for my birthday last month. We both love musicals. I was a bit offended but enjoyed it. Daughter bought a frog toy (iykyk)
Lots of people walked out fairly early on, it really is dark and twisty humour. If he'd like that kind of thing and could look past it being a musical then go for it!

newnamethanks · 26/11/2023 22:56

Stunningly vulgar and crass but very funny.

Badlands1 · 24/12/2023 08:06

I was not offended by the swearing etc but just found it really crass, racist and a massive waste of money. I just couldn't wait for it to end. The cast are great and sing and dance fantastically but the storyline is really weak and just relies on being crude and outrageous for laughs. No clever satire here - I thought it would be more 'In the thick of it' style.
Loads of Americans in the audience who loved it though.

HardcoreLadyType · 24/12/2023 08:12

Puffypuffin · 26/11/2023 19:04

Well the Life of Brian is his all time favourite film so I reckon he would love it. 🤣

I love Life of Brian, but didn’t like the Book of Mormon.

I saw the humour in BoM, but didn’t find it laugh out loud funny like most of the audience seemed to. More a wry smile kind of humour.

^ This.

It was puerile and very dated. The targets of the jokes were Frat Boy level. If you still find South Park hilarious, you’ll like it.

I wasn’t offended in the slightest, it’s a lot less shocking than Jerry Springer: The Opera was, and that was 20 years ago.

I thought it was funny in parts but mostly just meh.

Simonjt · 24/12/2023 08:20

Its funny if you enjoy racism, people losing their lives to aids and peadophiles raping babies.

MincepiesAreOneOfYourFiveADay · 24/12/2023 08:59

Oh dear. I think you missed the pisstaking part then. The whole thing is a massive dig at how the Mormons think that by sharing their belief in God it will genuinely help with the horrors people are facing such as FGM and aids and how ludicrously crass and naive that is. The laugh is always at the expense of the Mormons not people who are actually suffering.

I’ve seen it several times. It’s REALLY rude and on the edge but it is absolutely hilarious and a very slick production, I’m sure your DH will love it. I went to see it with my 80 yr old MIL (she took me!) and we were in stitches, as was everyone around us. My painfully woke, gay dd was actually in tears of laughter about the ‘turn it off’ song. I do have a friend who felt it went too far but most people I know who’ve seen it, loved it.

IloveJudgeJudy · 24/12/2023 09:32

DH also loves Life of Brian. We took him to Book of Mormon. He says it was OK. He much prefers The Blues Brothers.

The rest of us really enjoyed it. It’s very sweary which I wasn’t expecting. I’m not one for swearing but in the context I found it all right.

My conclusion is that if he’s not one for shows you can’t guarantee he will enjoy it (like DH).

Shudacudawuda · 24/12/2023 09:38

Anyone saying its racist has got the wrong end of the stick completely.
It's poking fun at the white Americans who think they can be the saviours of Africa.
The jokes at their expense, not at Africa's expense.

StillWantingADog · 24/12/2023 09:43

Well my dh who REALLY doesn’t do musicals chuckled all the way through

musically it’s not great (songs not memorable) but it’s a great show, very funny and very crass/un-pc. I found the first 5 minutes a bit shocking but then eased into it and loved it

SquashPenguin · 24/12/2023 09:44

It’s hilarious. I saw it years ago with a friend who was an ex- Mormon. He was playing the soundtrack to his (still practicing) mormon parents for weeks afterwards 🤣

I'd watch it again in a heartbeat.

ThisHouseWillBeTheDeathOfMe · 24/12/2023 09:47

Iloveraccoons · 26/11/2023 11:30

Echo all the above, I went in blind and they say "cunt" in the first maybeeee 12 minutes which I was very taken aback by but I've seen it three times now and it's my favourite!

This.

The first song is the worst. So you get this almost slapped in your face with no easing in, and think "oh god, is the whole thing going to be this crass and offensive."

It's not. The rest of the show put together is not as offensive as the first song. It's superb. One of the best musicals I've seen. And I hate south park.

LoudestRoar · 24/12/2023 10:55

I've booked tickets for this for DH for Christmas. He is not a musical fan, but he loves South Park, so hoping this will convert him!

CattingAbout · 24/12/2023 10:58

It's hilarious! I laughed so hard my ribs hurt. Agree with pp, very rude though. South Park/Family Guy/American Dad/Rick and Morty level of humour.

theveryhungrybum · 24/12/2023 11:00

Very, very funny. And clever, very clever.
