Ok so I have Been trying to sort out my shithole house. Thanks to lots of support ,encouragement, understanding from people on here im finally winning.

Anyway I put this unit up on my own and messed it up . I left half an inch gap up the top. Which has caused the rest to he out of place . I can't take it down and redo it. Any ideas how I could cover it some how?

Also I was thinking about putting a couple of plants on the unit. I had a look but alot of them seem to need to be near a window,

Another ideas to cheer things up a bit would be good 🙂

As long as you are convinced it's secure and definitely can't be redone then I would probably buy of make a glam picture frame and stick it on the outside. As it's the middle unit you'll get away with it.

I'm thinking the frame on the door of Monica's flat in friends. That kind of decorative thing, make sure it overlaps the gap.

Overthebow · 25/11/2023 17:20

You could paint the wall behind the unit, it looks a bit strange with the white of the unit against cream, especially in the tv gap. A bright colour could be nice.

RedToothBrush · 25/11/2023 17:20

It's white. That not adding any thing to your life.

Add colour. Or go personal. It won't be to everyones taste but it will stop being a white souless thing.

That was the point of my post 😔

I think the plant idea is good, it can trail down to cover it, 3 identical pots in a row.

GalileoHumpkins · 25/11/2023 17:25

How much height do you have to the ceiling? Could you fit some faux trailing plants up there, they'd hang down and cover the front to disguise it a bit.

Doggymummar · 25/11/2023 17:25

Looking much better than your last picture, you are doing great 😃

NorthernLiner · 25/11/2023 17:25

I’m not a fan of them myself, but artificial plants are your answer here. A trailing one to hang down over the gap.

You’ve done a great job putting all those units up by yourself!

From ceiling to top of unit is 8.5 inch that could be an idea.

Could you not use something to try and raise it up folded cardboard etc?

MadMadamMimz · 25/11/2023 17:29

I agree with a previous poster that painting the wall behind the units would help it pop. A sage green or navy could work.

There are some house plants that manage in shadier spots, I have a trailing Pothos that is doing rather well.

Thank you. Definitely getting there. I thought if I can cheer it up a bit maybe I will make more effort

Sorry put my specs on! I see where you mean yes sone nice plants from ikea I've one the the bathroom and it trails down . It would look good

mintmagnum3 · 25/11/2023 17:31

Well down for putting that together by yourself! I could never do that 🩷
For me it's the magnolia paint colour. I love white units but they need to be against soemthing from a Different colour family.

Pinkpinkplonk · 25/11/2023 17:32

You could run a string of lights all round the outside, you can get stick on leds ( which are like on a cello tape, so wouldn’t show). Stick those quite far back, then get some plants or glass stuff to go in front that the light would shine through.
This has good potential @Shithole101

She means if you stick a thick picture frame around the outside of the middle door, it'll obscure the gap. Could look great if you find the right thing.

Baystar · 25/11/2023 17:33

Agree, dark colour on wall. Faux hanging plant to cover gap. Nice rug infront of unit to cosy things up. Try and get cables tidied up a bit and then candles, accessories to compliment. You're doing a great job!

Pinkpinkplonk · 25/11/2023 17:34

@Shithole101 i cannot believe you have wrapped Christmas presents!!! I haven’t even started thinking……..

Laiste · 25/11/2023 17:39

Yes, i'd get some bushy little fake plants to go along the top (trailing might be a pain in the bum with the cupboards?) and i'd honestly think about choosing a really dark colour like navy to paint around the telly. Make it a colour you can pick up in an accessory like cushions or a rug. It will make the telly look bigger, and make a contrast with the white unit.

Well done you for putting all that up OP!

Some of the paint companies do a quite big sample pot for 4 or 5 pounds.

Laiste · 25/11/2023 17:41

A nice small table lamp somewhere would make a nice mood light. Not necessarily on the unit, just in the room somewhere.

I always find having the ''big light'' on makes me stressed!

justalittlesnoel · 25/11/2023 17:42

I'd get a piece of mdf or similar almost as thick as the 1/2 inch gap, prime it white and pop it in the slot!

I can't believe you've built + put that up, incredibly impressive!!

A nice cable tidy to hide the wires below the tv would look good, and I'd put an LED light strip along the top of the unit to create a bit of warm white light.

ditalini · 25/11/2023 17:43

Spider plants will take whatever you throw at them environment -wise.

No, they're not particularly exciting but they trail, make baby plants, and every now and then they put out spikes and flower.
