Ok so I have Been trying to sort out my shithole house. Thanks to lots of support ,encouragement, understanding from people on here im finally winning.

Anyway I put this unit up on my own and messed it up . I left half an inch gap up the top. Which has caused the rest to he out of place . I can't take it down and redo it. Any ideas how I could cover it some how?

Also I was thinking about putting a couple of plants on the unit. I had a look but alot of them seem to need to be near a window,

Another ideas to cheer things up a bit would be good 🙂

You could run a string of lights all round the outside, you can get stick on leds ( which are like on a cello tape, so wouldn’t show). Stick those quite far back, then get some plants or glass stuff to go in front that the light would shine through.
This has good potential @Shithole101

They would never get turned on. I always use my maim lights. That idea did go through my head though.

As long as you are convinced it's secure and definitely can't be redone then I would probably buy of make a glam picture frame and stick it on the outside. As it's the middle unit you'll get away with it.

I'm thinking the frame on the door of Monica's flat in friends. That kind of decorative thing, make sure it overlaps the gap.

That wont work as you wouldnt be able to open the doors fully.

The above links are to show white units/woodwork against dark walls.

She means if you stick a thick picture frame around the outside of the middle door, it'll obscure the gap. Could look great if you find the right thing.

Oh I see. I don't think I would be able to open the doors though.

Take off the middle door completely and have that unit as an open display shelf. The you could add a plant there for a bit of greenery.

I think the plant idea is good, it can trail down to cover it, 3 identical pots in a row.

IKEA does good fake ones that might work?

nottaotter · 25/11/2023 17:50

Yes or Dunelm and B and Q.

Maybe something like this?

That looks great! I have white units and white walls - ignore the haters, it's your home. I also have similar gaps either side of a unit I put together, I just ignore them.

The plant you linked to would be perfect if the gap really bothers you. I have loads of plastic plants, they're the only type I can keep alive! Although, after a while, you won't even notice that tiny gap. It will be your proud reminder that you put that up yourself.

Namenamchange · 25/11/2023 18:11

you could try a strip of wood, stick it on with no more nails, paint it first, make it look build in.

Dahliasrule · 25/11/2023 18:12

I don’t notice the gap so much at the top but it is the position of the shelves on the right which I can’t work out. Why don’t they match the ones on the left?
Well done for getting it up. It was a huge project!

Orangewall · 25/11/2023 18:20

Good job OP! My first thought went to some shallow storage baskets in wicker or canvas that will fit the space and the width.

CyberCritical · 25/11/2023 18:26

B&M do reasonably priced and nice looking fake trailing plants for colour.

I would be tempted to get some of the stick on vinyl and cover the doors, you could go for a wood grain effect so the doors are wood, the frame and shelves are white or you could go for something more vivid/bold.

Yeah I know I'm not repainting. I only did it a few months back. I don't like dark colours they depress me. Especially on a wall I'm likely to look at .

I could probably kill plastic plants.

Ive done this before 😁.. i bought some white beading from bnq and stuck it on with no nails to one of drawers so that it still opened. It bridged that gap

I'm impressed that you have built that unit and wrapped some Christmas presents. I haven't bought any yet.

Changednayme · 25/11/2023 18:36

That’s a cloth and some spray cleaner for screens and wipe down the TV screen. Unbox all of those Amazon packages and flat pack them

yes, a few plastic trailing plants would be great! Primark have a good selection that I’ve used in my DS’s room. Honestly, unless you’re up super close they lookngreat! And not expensive. Id go fewer bigger ones rather than lots of little if poss and go for an odd number.

Nope they are things that can't be seen so need to stay there for now. I will clean the TV when I can be arsed. I'm in lazy mode just now
