Ok so I have Been trying to sort out my shithole house. Thanks to lots of support ,encouragement, understanding from people on here im finally winning.

Anyway I put this unit up on my own and messed it up . I left half an inch gap up the top. Which has caused the rest to he out of place . I can't take it down and redo it. Any ideas how I could cover it some how?

Also I was thinking about putting a couple of plants on the unit. I had a look but alot of them seem to need to be near a window,

Another ideas to cheer things up a bit would be good 🙂

I'd give it a good clean, close the cupboards, paint your door and remove the clutter at the side

Ok, we'll, I'd try the other tips if you want the stark lighting to stay. Maybe try some warm white lightbulbs?

Trunking for the tv wires is also an idea?

Yes tv wires need sorting I have a long wire in the floor that I need to tack and get behinde the unit. I will get to that soon ish

DH adjusted the hinges in our ikea cupboard doors to make them all line up.
Have you played with the hinges to centralize the middle door?

Otherwise, I'd take the middle door off, paint something the right shape to go in the gap the the colour of the unit, and wedge it in the gap. Fill the centre unit with pretty stuff.... you will need someone with more interior decor skills than me to identify what pretty stuff could go that high up tho!

I only use the main light too. I find lamps prissy and irritating. But you could have decorative lights in addition to the proper light rather than instead of. So you still use them to disguise the gap but you don't lose the proper light.

I think that's what was being suggested. Can't quite picture it myself mind you.

I would not mind a lamp of some sort on the shelves where the Xmas presents are at the moment. As a sort of decorative item. But it would not actually get used.

I'm a big fan of picture frames. They can brighten a room, make you feel happy. I liked mirrored Instagram as they dance the light out, throw a couple of nice books, a scented candle in there and you've got atmosphere.

This is the plant: it's cheap and easy to grow:

Which way do the cabinets open?
if up can you open them and put a strip of white tape or fablon along the join - so you can’t see it so obviously?

agree with spider plants.

Yeah I do need to sort the hinges . That's not the reason fir the bigger gap though . But yeah I do need to do that.

Would you consider an area rug?

In this picture you can't see much of the floor but I thought that might cosy it up a bit when I looked at your other thread after you got it all tidy.

There’s also that tape you put on the end of a kitchen worktop after it’s been cut to finish it. Might be more expensive than tape but maybe not as much as fablon.

Yes I do need to get a rug .but that will likely be the other end of the room where my sofa is. I probably won't do that till after Xmas

Worth a look. The easier the better 😅

Some trailing plants on top real/artificial.
some books on one of shelves.
Some framed photos.
some more plants on shelves.
some candles.

well done you. It looks amazing and you have done a fantastic job!

Siha345 · 25/11/2023 21:38

i would get some white contact paper (that stuff that’s like sticky back plastic) in either gloss or matte to match the texture and use that to cover the gap. You won’t notice it when the doors are closed and if you cut it straight it will look like an edging strip
