I'm not happy with them either, @DancesWithDucks, but at least half of the blame is on Biden. He's afraid that any compromise on immigration policy will offend the far left of his party and put him further down in the polls against the Republicans in the presidential race. It's selfish of him to even be seeking reelection at his age and when his chances of wining are so poor.

There's some more news about Russia's egg crisis.

https://www.poultryworld.net/poultry/layers/perfect-storm-on-russias-egg-market-authorities-to-step-in/

Apparently they bought almost twenty tons of eggs from Turkey, but most unfortunately about one-fifth of the ones that were sent were infected with bird flu; the sort that kills people. Salmonella and botulism were also found, and they're not terribly good for people either.

Even more unfortunately, a lot of these eggs had been sold before testing revealed this.

https://www.newsweek.com/russia-egg-crisis-nato-turkey-export-backfires-h5n1-bird-flu-1860155

The authorities are of course denying that there is any problem, whist busily recalling any they can manage to.

PerkingFaintly · 14/01/2024 13:13

!! That's not great news for egg-eaters in Turkey, either! Unless the eggs sent to Russia had already been condemned in Turkey.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-january-13-2024

Key Takeaways:

  • A recent video appeal by a Serbian mercenary addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin has unleashed discussions about an ongoing β€œclan war” within the Kremlin and the Russian information space against the backdrop of the Russian presidential campaign.
  • In-fighting and factional dynamics within the Kremlin are not new phenomena and do not indicate the imminent collapse of Putin’s regime, particularly because power verticals are the foundation of Putin's regime.
  • Russian forces launched a medium-sized drone, missile, and air attack against Ukraine on the night of January 12-13 using a strike package similar to recent Russian strike packages.
  • Russian forces are reportedly increasingly using chemical weapons in Ukraine in continued apparent violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention, to which Russia is a party.
  • A fire destroyed a large warehouse in St. Petersburg belonging to Russia’s largest online retailer Wildberries on January 12.
  • Russian forces made confirmed advances near Kreminna and Avdiivka amid continued positional engagements along the entire front line.
  • Russian forces may be forming air assault brigades within combined arms ground formations as part of ongoing large-scale military reforms.
  • Russian officials continue to fund social projects in occupied Ukraine in an effort to integrate these territories further into Russia and create the veneer of an active civil society in occupied areas.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡The fourth meeting of national security advisors on the Ukrainian peace formula is taking place in Davos, Switzerland.
At this meeting, five points of the Ukrainian peace formula are being discussed: withdrawal of Russian troops, restoration of justice, environmental safety, prevention of escalation and recurrence of war, and confirmation of the end of the war.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡± The Prime Minister of Poland said that he would not allow representatives of his government to build their position on anti-Ukrainian sentiments, as there can be no doubt about the need to support Ukraine during the war.

Since the beginning of the large-scale war, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have recorded 626 cases of Russian use of ammunition with toxic chemicals, 51 of which occurred in January
The dynamics of the use of such munitions is growing. Up to 10 cases are recorded daily. Mostly, the Russian army uses K-51 and RGM grenades dropped from copters. Improvised explosives with irritants and chemical shells are also used.

I would guess the Houthi attacks on shipping will have an impact on China and other Asian countries exporting goods to Europe.

But what I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is the impact this might have on South Africa. Shipping is being re-routed via the Cape of Good Hope, so South Africa may well see a lift in its economy and strategic importance. Before the construction of the Suez Canal, Cape Town was known as the "Tavern of the Seas" because so much shipping stopped off there.

I have no idea what this will mean politically and globally!

Rumours another Russian A50 and II22-M down. Dmitri toned down the 'most likely' in another post but he's usually accurate when he claims something has happened.

The A50s are irreplaceable for monitoring what's going on around.

A few hours ago, someone apparently attacked two Russian aircraft over the Azov Sea: A-50 early warning and control and Il22-M command and control aircraft. The former is claimed to now be scuba diving, while the latter, well... the following audio recording emerged which apparently demonstrates the Il22-M requesting urgent landing in Anapa, calling for ambulance and fire crews. Numbers in the recording are quite challenging to decipher. Information in Russian channels is scarce. But the events have most likely taken place and Russia lost at least one very expensive and valuable flying asset. By the way, yesterday, Russian channels claimed destruction of a Patriot AA system in Western Ukraine. But didn't provide any evidence whatsoever. Eternal fishing!

  • Ukrainian officials announced that Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft and severely damaged an Il-22 airborne command post aircraft on the night of January 14.
  • A senior Ukrainian intelligence official confirmed that Russian forces can generate forces at a rate equal to Russian monthly personnel losses, which is consistent with ISW’s assessment that Russian forces are able to conduct routine operational level rotations in Ukraine.
  • Skibitskyi indicated that international sanctions are constraining Russian missile and drone production as Russian forces likely continue to adapt their missile and drone strike packages in an effort to penetrate Ukrainian air defenses.
  • German outlet BILD reported on classified German documents describing a hypothetical scenario to prepare for a possible future conflict between NATO and Russia. Developing such scenarios, which are usually classified, is a normal task for professional military staffs.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Switzerland on January 15 to discuss aspects of the Ukrainian peace plan and support for Ukraine with global leaders at the Davos World Economic Forum from January 15 to 19.
  • A North Korean delegation including North Korean Foreign Minister Choi Song Hui arrived in Moscow on January 14 for an official state visit to Russia on January 15 to 17.
  • Russia and Iran are preparing to sign a Grand Interstate Treaty to further develop Russian-Iranian military-technological cooperation.
  • The Kremlin is intensifying censorship measures to limit criticism of the Russian war effort in Ukraine ahead of the March 2024 presidential election.
  • Russian forces made confirmed advances west of Donetsk City and near Krynky amid continued positional fighting along the entire line of contact.
  • The Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) is reportedly forming a women’s drone operating detachment.
  • The Ukrainian Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) stated that Ukrainian resistance forces detonated a Russian military UAZ Patriot vehicle in occupied Melitopol, Zaporizhia Oblast, injuring four Russian personnel and killing an unspecified number of personnel.

Note: A Russian insider source claiming to be an employee of an unspecified Russian security structure claimed that unspecified Russian actors created a β€œduck” (a Russian term for a false claim) about how Russian forces shot down the A-50 to reassure Russian pilots that missions over the Black Sea and Sea of Azov are still safe and that human error was the cause of the incident.[13] It is unclear why Russian pilots should be more comfortable with the idea that their ground-based air defenders are so incompetent.
