^He wants a second term that badly, even though it looks increasingly unlikely that he'll win it.

.... you think the Republicans really will get in?

That's the most depressing news in the last 30 years.

A lot can happen between now and next November. Trump's numbers could drop if he winds up with one or more felony convictions. Nikky Haley got an important endorsement in New Hampshire, a critical early primary state.

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/12/12/sununu-nikki-haley-endorsement-00131264

Biden could suffer a health issue that would prevent him from campaigning, or his fairly obvious cognitive decline could accelerate to the point where it can't be covered up.

It's the strangest presidential election I can recall. There's no way to call it at this point.

New Hampshire Gov. Sununu to endorse Nikki Haley for president

The endorsement could carry weight with more moderate Republicans and independents who vote in the GOP primary.

Biden could suffer a health issue that would prevent him from campaigning, or his fairly obvious cognitive decline could accelerate to the point where it can't be covered up.

I am so desperate for a credible and electable (intelligent, normal!?) democratic presidential candidate to become visible. There is no way Biden will win next year and for the life of me, I don’t understand why he is insisting on running. This is the most important election for the US as well as for the world. It feels like a turning point.

If there is no credible democrat, then I’d hope for the republican candidate to be Nikky Haley. Though I despair at her environmental policy stance and others, she does seem to be the most rational of republican candidates. Is there any chance that she’d gain the republican candidacy?

Clearly, the next president will be crucial for Ukraine.

Igotjelly · 14/12/2023 10:28

Did I hear somewhere (apologies cannot for the life of me remember where) that Tucker Carlson might be Trump's choice for VP?! If so WTF!

Also would recommend Mark Galeotti's latest episode of In Moscow's Shadow, entitled "Putin's Coming Back! And so's the Cold War? - Actually a really measured view of the reality of whether Putin will invade NATO. Mark critiques the recent report from the German Council of Foreign Relations and questions the logic of whether Russia would actually invade NATO if it rearms in 3 or 6 years (depending who you listen to).

UNITED24 Media Telegram Highlights (two days)

State Department: The new US aid package to Kyiv may be the last.
The new $200 million package of military aid to Ukraine includes ammunition for air defense systems for high mobility artillery rocket systems, artillery shells, and anti-radiation missiles, the US State Department reported.

Russian troops have not been able to occupy a single Ukrainian village this year, β€” Zelenskyy in an interview with Fox News [for all the failure of the counteroffensive, holding back the russians is a great achievement given they are outnumbered and outgunned. Although there are conflicting reports on Mari'inka now]

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί President of the European Council Michel, as well as Macron and Scholz, will gather for a working breakfast with OrbΓ‘n in an attempt to persuade him to change his mind on decisions he does not want to accept, β€” Politico

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊThe EU Council imposed new restrictive measures against 6 individuals and 5 entities involved in Iran’s development and production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) used in Russia's war against Ukraine.

Germany's draft new budget retains €8 billion for military aid to Ukraine β€” Olaf Scholz.

The European Commission intends to raise up to 15 billion euros by 2027 in the form of income from the reinvestment of frozen Russian assets. These funds are to be used for the support of Ukraine, β€” Financial Times. The faltering US and EU efforts to agree on additional financial support for Ukraine have given fresh impetus to the proposals to tap profits from frozen Russian assets.
To win over skeptics, the commission will initially require central securities depositories holding Russian central bank assets to place the profits generated from them in separate accounts. The profit will then be transferred to the EU's common budget.
The commission estimates this would generate up to €3 billion a year, or €15 billion between 2023 and 2027. The amount would depend on interest rates throughout the period. EU member states would need to unanimously back the plan, as well as further implementing steps, before the money could be disbursed to Kyiv.

The main sources of Ukraine's state budget funding are military bonds, loans from international financial organizations, as well as bilateral loans and grants, β€” the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.
As of December 7, 2023, the total amount of financing of the state budget general fund since the beginning of 2023 amounted to 1902 billion hryvnias, or $52.1 billion.
The largest budget funders were:
πŸ”ΈThe European Union (653.2 billion Ukrainian hryvnias, or $17.9 billion);
πŸ”ΈThe United States (399 billion Ukrainian hryvnias, or $10.9 billion);
πŸ”ΈPlacing government securities on the internal market (532.7 billion Ukrainian hryvnias, or $14.6 billion);
πŸ”ΈInternational Monetary Fund (131.4 billion Ukrainian hryvnias, or $3.6 billion).

A declassified US intelligence report estimates that the war in Ukraine cost Russia 315,000 soldiers killed and wounded, or nearly 90% of the personnel it had at the start of the conflict, β€” Reuters.
Russia has lost 87% of the total number of ground troops and two-thirds of the tanks it had gathered before the invasion of Ukraine β€” CNN.

Finland is opening two border crossing points for Russians β€” "Vaalimaa" and "Nijrala". From December 14, it will be possible to apply for asylum there. All other six checkpoints will remain closed. If the flow of illegal migrants increases again, all points will be closed again.

❗️ The assault group of the 24th Mechanised Brigade named after King Danylo repelled the slagheap located within the territory of Horlivka, temporarily occupied since 2014 in the Donetsk region, and seized enemy positions.

In 2024, the Swiss company Global Clearance Solutions (GCS) aims to elevate the quantity of unmanned demining machines supplied to Ukraine to 70 units.

Azerbaijan sent the third batch of 20 trucks of humanitarian aid to restore the power system to Ukraine.
The total amount of energy assistance will be more than 7.6 million dollars.

The Russians are planning to conduct an inventory of land plots and β€œnationalize” those whose owners refused to re-register their ownership rights, the National Resistance Center of Ukraine reports.
In order to register the right of ownership in accordance with the occupation legislation, which has no legal force, it is necessary to obtain a passport of the Russian Federation.

Ukraine has acquired an additional 4 Gurkha armored vehicles in the medical variant, facilitated through the assistance of the United24 initiative.

Live: Ukraine Highlights (Two Days)

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said that Congress is unlikely to approve an additional funding package for Ukraine before Christmas, even if the two parties reach a deal in the coming days.

Today, the EU summit starts, and at least two important issues for Ukraine will be discussed
It is expected to consider the launch of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU and the approval of a four-year support program for Ukraine worth €50 billion.
Ukraine has fulfilled all seven recommendations of the European Commission and expects to start accession negotiations, but the only uncertainty is Hungary's position, which may influence the EU's decision.

Mark Rutte, the long-time head of the Dutch government, who is finishing his term in office, is confident that he will be able to convince Orban to vote for Ukraine.
He explained that his optimism is based on past experience.
"So far we have managed to achieve unanimity, including with regard to Orban. And I am absolutely sure and will work hard to ensure that this happens today," Rutte said.

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡° Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj BlanΓ‘r said that Bratislava is ready to support the decision to open EU accession talks with Ukraine at the December summit

Joe Biden has proposed changes to border policy that raise the prospect of a bipartisan agreement to help Ukraine.
Under this proposal, the president could receive expanded powers to deport migrants as soon as a certain number of illegal immigrants cross the border.
According to Bloomberghttps://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-12-13/republican-senators-say-they-re-weighing-biden-immigration-offer Republicans met to discuss the idea "behind closed doors." Senator Tom Tillis said that representatives of the Republican Party have yet to check whether the idea is serious.
◾️As a reminder, Republicans insist on stricter immigration controls on the border with Mexico in order to approve the aid package, which includes $61 billion for Ukraine.

US Secretary of Defense Austin said that Washington will help Kyiv build future forces to repel Russian aggression in the coming years

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΉAustrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said that his country is not ready to support the opening of negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the EU in the current circumstances, arguing that no one should have special accession conditions

Zelensky believes that if the EU does not approve the decision to start accession talks with Ukraine because of the Hungarian blockade, it will mean that Putin himself vetoed the decision.

In Russia, Putin's press conference and "direct line" are underway. He has already been asked about when the war in Ukraine will end and about mobilization in Russia. Here is what he answered:
β–ͺ️"There will be peace when we achieve our goals." He claims that the goals of the SMO have not changed. He again mentioned "denazification", "demilitarization" and the neutral status of Ukraine. He once again called Russians and Ukrainians "one people".
β–ͺ️On the possibility of a second wave of mobilization: "there is no need for this today". He said that 486 thousand people have signed the contract so far and that 1500 people are allegedly signing up every day. At present, he added, there are 244 thousand people in the combat zone. [bear in mind this is from a talented student of the Prince of Lies]
β–ͺ️However, Putin did not answer the question of whether those mobilized last year would be demobilized. Also, a question to him via SMS was displayed on the screen in the hall - "Why does your reality diverge from our reality?". There was no answer.

Grzegorz Braun, a member of the Polish Confederation Party, grabbed a fire extinguisher during a Sejm session and extinguished Hanukkah candles, which are traditionally lit in the Sejm on the major Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. At the same time he shouted anti-Semitic slogans. He was therefore removed from the session.
β–ͺ️Grzegorz Braun is one of the initiators of the blockade of the Ukrainian-Polish border. He has repeatedly spoken out against the presence of Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

Hungary has passed a law against "foreign influence." Now politicians who receive funding from abroad face prison.
According to critics, the law is aimed at silencing opponents of Viktor Orban's government.

Radio Liberty published a video showing Russian soldiers leading three prisoners forward while firing behind them.
The Geneva Convention explicitly prohibits the use of prisoners of war to participate in hostilities. That is, after being granted official status, a prisoner of war must be held in a specially created camp and await the exchange procedure.

The ability of Russia to obtain Western components for its weapons is a big problem
Russia has been able to find loopholes in the sanctions regime to buy what it needs.

Seems like some of the questions/comments in Putin's 4 hour (yes 4 hour!) televised Q&A weren't exactly what we might have expected and were slightly more critical than anticipated. From what I can gather not all of them were selected for answer/response but did come up on the screen behind Putin. For example:

  • (in relation to Putin announcing he would run again) - "Don't run for another term, let the young try"
  • When will the life of ordinary people be better not in words but in deeds?"
  • "A bad peace is better than a good quarrel. We should move in this direction. People's lives are an unacceptable price."
  • Why do mostly civilian volunteers provide for the soldiers at the special military operation? Is the MOD not capable of doing that?"
  • "When will the special military operation end?"
  • "I understand that there are no miracles but I want one"

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-december-13-2023

Key Takeaways:

  • The Kremlin appears to be returning to expansionist rhetoric last observed before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in an effort to resurface its claims that Ukraine is part of historically Russian territory and discuss the borders Russian leaders regard as appropriate for a rump Ukrainian state.
  • The return of the Kremlin’s notion of a β€œpartitioned Ukraine” is likely an organized effort to mislead the international community into rejecting key components of Ukraine’s sovereignty: its territorial integrity as defined in 1991 and its right to self-determination.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on December 13 that Ukraine’s decision to transition to defensive operations is motivated by winter weather conditions and not a β€œcrisis,” in response to a recent New York Times (NYT) article.
  • Russian and Ukrainian sources continue to report on the impacts of challenging weather conditions on offensive and reconnaissance operations throughout the front, even as reported freezing and snowy winter conditions in eastern Ukraine offer the prospect of better conditions for maneuver.
  • A Russian β€œStorm-Z” assault unit instructor complained that deputy commanders of Russian irregular armed formations are spreading illogical and false claims that present an overly optimistic view of the situation on the front in the Russian media and information space.
  • The instructor’s complaint about Russian sources spreading unsubstantiated and maximalist claims largely aligns with ISW’s mapping practices.
  • The Russian MoD is likely using formalized irregular unit commanders as a conduit to spread incorrect information about Russian battlefield successes within the Russian information space in order to circumvent the MoD's responsibility.
  • Russian forces conducted a series of drone and missile strikes on the night of December 12 to 13.
  • A Russian hacker group reportedly linked to the Main Directorate of the Russian General Staff (GRU) and a Russia-aligned hacker group both claimed responsibility for the cyberattack on Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar.
  • The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) stripped naturalized Russian citizens of their Russian citizenship for the first time, likely as part of ongoing migrant crackdowns aimed at coercing migrants into Russian military service while placating the xenophobic Russian ultranationalist community.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended the second Ukraine-Northern Europe Summit in Oslo, Norway on December 13.
  • Russian forces continued offensive operations along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line, north of and near Bakhmut, near Avdiivka, west of Donetsk City, along the Donetsk-Zaporizhia Oblast border area, and in western Zaporizhia Oblast and advanced in various sectors.
  • The Chuvash Republic is offering bonuses to foreigners who fight in the war in Ukraine, likely as part of efforts to recruit migrants to the Russian military.
  • Occupation authorities continue efforts to destroy Ukrainian national and historical identity.

@Igotjelly Now that does sound surprising.

I wonder if it's a way of allowing a certain amount of steam to be released? Everyone knows Putin's not going to give way.

Igotjelly · 14/12/2023 18:17

Really positive news on EU accession talks for Ukraine and Moldova. Seems Hungary β€˜stayed away’ from the decision which let it go through.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 14/12/2023 20:00

The Telegraph's article on the press conference. I do wonder if heads will roll after the critical messages were included in the telecast:

Critical text messages beamed on screen in front of Putin

Attacks on Russian leader appear during annual phone-in as he rules out a second mobilisation for war in Ukraine

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 14/12/2023 20:04

(Oops sent too early!)

Text messages with rare criticism of Vladimir Putin appeared behind the Russian president on a giant studio screen during his televised annual phone-in.
Viewers tuning into the marathon press conference directly challenged the Russian leader’s reasons for ordering a full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year.
β€œWhy is your β€˜reality’ at odds with our lived reality?” one message read. Protests against Russia’s war in Ukrainee_ are banned.
Another criticised the Kremlin’s powerful propaganda machine. β€œMr President, why does the real Russia differ from the one on television?” it said.
Last week, Putin confirmed that he would run in a presidential election in Russiaa_ in March but another of the rogue messages read: β€œDon’t run for another term as president. Make way for the young!”

β€˜This question won’t be shown!’
Putin appeared not to notice the messages, which were broadcast on live television.
One text messaging appeared to mock the Kremlin’s own propaganda machine.
β€œHello. When will it be possible to move to the Russia which they tell us about on Channel One?” it read.
Another read: β€œThis question won’t be shown! I’d like to know, when will our president pay attention to his own country? We’ve got no education, no healthcare. The abyss lies ahead...”
Although it is dressed up as a genuine question-and-answer session for ordinary Russians, the Kremlin carefully vets the process. It is unclear how the rogue messages were allowed onto the giant TV screen.
The messages could have slipped through, in what would amount to an embarrassing security lapse. But a Russian political scientist said that it may have been deliberate to create a false impression of free speech in Russia.
Mikhail Khodorkovsky, an exiled opposition businessman, however, said: β€œPutin is holding his annual televised Q&A today, and people have been invited to send questions via text, to be displayed on big screens behind him. Apparently, whoever is filtering them has let some uncomfortable ones slip through.”

600,000 Russian troops in Ukraine
The rest of the phone-in appeared to be running as planned by the Kremlin which had organised for Putin to face a mixture of soft domestic questions and to receive the adulation of children and frontline soldiers.
A group of Russian soldiers wearing badges with Putin’s face on their uniforms asked about promoting the military more heavily to children as they stood in what appeared to be a bunker near the frontline. In the background, shots could be heard.
During the phone-in, Putin said that there wouldn’t be a second mobilisation.
β€œWhy do we need a mobilisation? Today there is no need for this,” he said.
This was the first phone-in that Putin has faced since his soldiers invaded Ukraine in February 2022. He skipped the session last December because his forces were on the backfoot.
He used the phone-in to claim more than 600,000 Russian troops were now in Ukraine, double the number that entered during the initial stages of the invasion. He also criticised the Kyiv war machine and ruled out a further round of mobilisation.
Putin has looked increasingly confident over the past few months because his forces have fought off a Nato-backed counter-offensive in Ukraine and Western support for Kyiv is beginning to fracturee_.

Putin’s confidence is worrying. As are the reasons for it. Plus, he looked really quite healthy.

The one thing I'm pleased about about is that Ukraine and the Ukraine War is back centre stage on the UK news. All the news is not necessarily 100% positive but it's reinforcing the message of Ukrainian resistance, plus the fact that it is looking to Europe not Russia and ultimately to be a member of the EU, not part of the Russian sphere of influence (let alone part of Russia).

It's an explicit counter narrative to Putin's "press conference" today.

I truly hope that it will galvanise public and political support for the ongoing material aid that Ukraine needs.

I don't understand how he is allowed to run. Won't anyone close to him tell him he's not fit to run again? Or the Democrats refuse to let him be their candidate?
After Kekkonen's dementia in Finland the President releases an annual health statement - no one wants a President with dementia again and our President isn't anywhere near as powerful as yours.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 15/12/2023 05:53

From The Guardian:

Hungary’s prime minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n has blocked a €50bn EU aid package for Ukraine, hours after leaders side-stepped his opposition to agree to open talks with Kyiv on joining the bloc.
A crunch summit in Brussels broke up after a day of wrangling as the Hungarian leader refused to green light funding to help Ukraine’s government over the next four years.
Posting on XX*, formally known as Twitter, OrbΓ‘n wrote β€œSummary of the nightshift: veto for the extra money to Ukraine”.

I really think it's time for the EU to man up and start ignoring Hungary's veto. He really is the enemy within. Emergency legislation needs to be passed to ensure one state can't hold up vital aid to another.
