...regardless of your feelings about the settlements themselves? I haven't been to any of the following but they have a definite appeal:

Ashby-de-la-Zouch
Barton In The Beans
Bourton-on-the-Water - it sounds frightfully English

My favourite is Tring.

There are some good ones here in the North East:

Wall (because it's near Hadrian's Wall)
Wallsend (because that's where it ends)
Pity Me
Old Man's Bottom (good swimming spot)
Shilbottle (not funny in itself but what's funny is the person who changes it to Shitbottle constantly.)
No Place
Once brewed, which is next to twice brewed

Shilbottle will always be called Shitbottle in our house

I quite like Hinton-in-the-Hedges too for its quaint rural Englishness.

Always loved the sound of Ambleside

And I also love the sound of Darlington

backtowinter · 23/11/2023 22:33

Ottery St Mary too

Sounds like an Agatha Christie location

Not quite in the same league but I maintain that Surbiton sounds like invented shorthand for boring suburbia.

Are we quite sure it wasn't created specifically for Margot Leadbetter to live in?

PotOfViolas · 23/11/2023 22:48

Titsey, Surrey

LoveTheDarts · 23/11/2023 22:53

Twatley Manor in the hamlet of Twatley, Wiltshire.

The owners changed the name of the manor to Whatley but couldn't change the name of the hamlet, farm, cottages and bus stop 😂

It's still Twatley Manor to everyone local.

I recently got DH a map of the UK with rude/funny place names on it. Some of them are hilarious. There's a road not far from me called Wibbly Wobbly Lane x
