...regardless of your feelings about the settlements themselves? I haven't been to any of the following but they have a definite appeal:

Ashby-de-la-Zouch
Barton In The Beans
Bourton-on-the-Water - it sounds frightfully English

My favourite is Tring.

I can confirm that Ashby de la Zouch, Barton in the Beans, Bicester and Towcester are less than inspiring in actuality.

Ive always liked the three neighbouring hamlets of Ogbourne St George, Ogbourne St Andrew and Ogbourne Maizey, all on the River Og.

There are so many. I bought a road map of the UK years ago and it kept me entertained on long journeys looking out for nearby place names. I got to the point where I thought if I ever win the lotto I'm going to do a tour of all the towns and villages with fun names.

If I'm going to pick one that's not been mentioned yet, I'll go with Bell o' th' Hill. Simply because it has apostrophes in it.

As a child I thought it was overseas because some kids in my class went there for beach holidays and it sounded exotic.

Titty Ho. The name of a Road in Wellingborough, and also home to the Titty Ho Motor Company.

Andoversford because I can always imagine the people long ago saying "Yes, go along the road and over t'ford".

Road names rather than place names that amuse me, Ha Ha Road and I want to live in Brambledown Avenue as it sounds as if I should be sharing it with friendly foxes and rabbits that talk to me.

Potto, because I got intrigued by the lorries of the only interesting-sounding haulage company ever — Prestons of Potto.

(Which should clearly be a stage magician act, not a haulage firm,)

Clitheroe and Penistone always make me giggle like a kid.
