What is your ultimate dream pet?

Doesn’t have to be one that can be domesticated. It can be literally any animal

My dream would be a fennec fox. I know people keep them as pets sometimes, but it wouldn’t be ideal whilst I’m in rented accommodation. Plus they are very pricey and require a lot of special attention and needs.

My other dream pet is a sphinx cat but my dh can’t stand them. He hates naked cats

A kunekune pig, if I had enough land (although some people have house pigs, apparently because they’re so clever they’re easy to house train like dogs). I don’t have a big enough house!

I saw a pet otter on Instagram, it was incredibly cute and played with the owner’s husky but I agree most animals shouldn’t be pets. I have dogs, and I love them, but there’s so much backyard breeding and mistreatment that I’d support much tougher restrictions on animal keeping. Generally I think ones that are rescued or ethically bred and easily adapt to domestic living are ok. I used to want a chameleon but they have such complex needs I wouldn’t do it. I would like a bearded dragon though, a chinchilla, perhaps some rats, a Samoyed…maybe one day if I win the lottery and can buy an entire field.

On the fantasy/impossible pet list, agree capybaras are amazing! They look so chilled and zen. A sloth, or maybe a friendly seal. I actually applied for a job seal-weighing in the Antarctic once, I didn’t get it (gutted)

A dairy cow 🐄

Tundera · 22/11/2023 12:22

A tiger.

Not as a pet as such, more as a familiar who would appear when hailed to smite my foes before disappearing into the night.

SabrinaThwaite · 22/11/2023 12:29

I read the book Corvus: A Life With Birds a while ago about life with a rescued rook (amongst others).

I read that too! I remember one dancing the plaster around the skirting board making places it could stash food. Let's face it - are there any pets that don't bring joy and grief in equal measure?

DugInLikeAnAlabamaTick · 22/11/2023 12:38

miniature donkey

I have an Imaginary Giraffe who leads a gang of Pygmy Hippos to Smite & Wreak Vengeance. In Stomping Boots. Or Tap Shoes. Or Jig Shoes.

And I also have my cats, one of whom is - very politely, in-between purrs - suggesting it might perhaps be lunchtime, so I should probably go & feed them…

@Trickedbyadoughnut Otters are really vicious. I did a zookeeper experience day with DD. We got up close and personal with lots of huge creatures, including hand-feeding rhinos but weren't allowed anywhere near the otters.

But, but, but all the Instagram videos ... ? 😜

I should have been a bit more specific in my post that I was very much commenting on a fantasy/dream/daemon kind of pet. I definitely do not want any wild animal as a pet in real life!

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 22/11/2023 13:10

I really want a rescue racehorse. They don’t have to be perfect but they would ideally have the loving disposition of my very neurotic but super affectionate and sweet late part-bred Connemara. I love the idea that I could show an animal that’s always been treated as a machine that they’re safe and loved now, we could overcome challenges together and build each others’ confidence up!

If it’s a wild animal, I’d take an elephant. Super intelligent and loyal.

bengalcat · 22/11/2023 13:12

A unicorn

SomersetBrie · 22/11/2023 13:15

A couple of sloths. I'd love to look out the window and see two sleeping on the silver birch in my neighbour's garden (I am sure they wouldn't mind).

afaloren · 22/11/2023 13:23

I’ve got him. My Labrador. He’s perfect and I dread the day something happens to him.

LoobyDop · 22/11/2023 13:49

My cat, with a few modifications:

  • fully tolerant of being groomed and washed, so I could look after her without physical damage to me
  • Able to communicate a variety of wishes rather than just NEED NOW!
  • it would be handy to be able to temporarily convert her to a dog or child, so we could take her places
  • if she could hygienically dispose of the corpses she generates, that would be nice too.
TheWayTheLightFalls · 22/11/2023 13:55

Several Newfounlands or Leonbergers. I'm slowly convincing DH through the medium of cute dog videos.

Thelnebriati · 22/11/2023 13:56

Camels. I want a dairy camel herd, each camel can give 4,000 litres of milk per year and thats the equivalent of 5 good dairy cows. I will sit on a sofa carved from a single block of cheese.

Aposterhasnoname · 22/11/2023 14:00

A donkey. I’d call it O.T (donkey O.T geddit?😁). I imagine us going about our daily business a bit like shrek and donkey, and he’d go down a storm at the grandkids nativity play.

Caledoniadreaming · 22/11/2023 14:02

To all those saying pandas....the videos I watch remind me so much of my three year old - so, while you can only have a panda in Fantasyland, in RealityLand dress a toddler in a panda costume and hey presto.

In my FantastyLand I'd have several Bernese Mountain Dogs, a couple of elephants and some capybaras.

evtheria · 22/11/2023 14:03

Safe choice: highland cow. Better choice: a bison

Safe choice: some sort of Maine coon mix. Better choice: one of those fat looking, grey wildcats from Europe or wherever it is

Nynaeva · 22/11/2023 14:04

A talking unicorn. But if we're talking real animals, maybe a raccoon. One that talks. ;)

In the meantime, our two current cats fit the bill very nicely. (Anyone who thinks cats can't communicate what they want and when they're annoyed has never met our two....)

Thelnebriati · 22/11/2023 14:04

evtheria
Get the bison, you can ride them.

TheChosenTwo · 22/11/2023 14:08

A baby elephant that stayed a baby forever 😂
I love seeing videos of them, they’re cute, playful and clumsy - just like my dc when they were small i suppose!
OBVIOUSLY I would never acquire such a pet but in my dream world I’d have a few just to watch them continuously.

Dodgyguts · 22/11/2023 14:16

A big fat alligator 🐊 In fantasy land it would not try to eat me or anyone else and wouldn't mind the rubbish UK climate.
