Him making these comments about Thatcher chime in with the "on the front foot" with the early attack ads from Labour.

You can't really say the Conservatives are currently on the front foot.

However, be interesting to see how this goes down. 🤔

It's interesting that the BBC say this may anger those on the left of the party. It sure has, and this may not matter. It has also pissed off many many Labour voters not on the left. I really don't want to vote for a party aligned in any way with Thatcherism. However, to get rid of the current bunch, I will do my bit. And this is what they are relying on. I feel a bit let down.

To be honest I think the BBC have given this quite a spin. I read the original article in the Telegraph and I didn't take away from it that he was praising Thatcher at all. His comment was just that meaningful change comes in politics when politicians act in service of the British public. I am no fan of Thatcher and despise what she did but I don't think anyone can doubt she believed she was acting in service of the country.

"I feel a bit let down"

If I didn't care about which party was in power it would certainly be fascinating.

I was comparing my memories of the time before the ill fated Kinnock 1992 election, the Blair 1997 and Starmer with this one. Especially the difference between Kinnock and Starmer run.

Incidentally, RIP Baroness Kinnock of Holyhead

L1ttledrummergirl · 03/12/2023 17:46

I don't disagree with Starmer, whether you love or hate Thatcher, she always had a plan, believed in the plan and did her utmost to carry it through.
She made mistakes and got some of the big things wrong, but you always had the sense that she believed she was doing the right thing for the country.

My sense of Sunak and his cronies is that they don't give a stuff about the country and are doing it for themselves.

Thatcher was a trailblazer, Sunak is a damp squib.

Zonder · 03/12/2023 17:55

I agree @L1ttledrummergirl I do think she believed she was doing what was best for the country. She was wrong but I think she truly believed in it. Unlike this shower who don't believe in much!

"I read the original article in the Telegraph and I didn't take away from it that he was praising Thatcher at all. "

Agree with this. Far from politicians all being "the same", some do in fact drive change (which may not align with your values).

Me too. What he actually said was Margaret Thatcher sought to drag Britain out of its stupor by setting loose our natural entrepreneurialism.. It’s a neutral statement of fact.

AdamRyan · 03/12/2023 18:18

I thought it was a very bold statement. He's showing he's confident of his position in the Labour Party (by referencing their nemesis in positive-ish terms) and keen to attract the centre, reasonable Conservative voters.
Not sure how the conservatives can respond either, so bravo!

Driving change: the cone hotline!

Sorry that's a little unfair on Sir John but they came up in conversation the other day.

I know right? Rock n roll conversation tobee.

pointythings · 03/12/2023 18:23

I think he's got a point, especially if you compare where the UK was in 1979 and where it is now (I'm old enough to remember and be able to compare!). Thatcher got many things wrong and created a toxic legacy, but at least she wasn't an utterly corrupt grifter only in it for her own financial advancement.

Yes when I saw this I was Hmm

Don't mind some centric Tory policy - but Thatcher?

Although it seems more about her grit to follow the will of the people and stand up for what she believes in rather than her policy?

itsgettingweird · 03/12/2023 20:14

There's a telegraph article that's much clearer in his meaning.

The telegraph article is where this all came from. He wrote it and the BBC / Guardian etc have spun it to sound like something totally different.

BIossomtoes · 03/12/2023 21:19

It’s the worst spin by mainstream media I’ve seen in a long time.

Yes by right and left.

Zonder · 03/12/2023 22:23

I was just looking for a thread for Glenys. Surprised there isn't one. Or have I missed it? She did a lot for so many women.

tobee · 03/12/2023 22:45

Glenys was a European 🇪🇺

Zonder · 03/12/2023 22:46

She was! I loved her!

tobee · 03/12/2023 22:47

And really quite young to be diagnosed and die with dementia

BIossomtoes · 03/12/2023 22:48

I didn’t realise she had dementia, that’s really sad.

tobee · 03/12/2023 23:00

Yes diagnosed in 2018 I think I read. I remember reading that the family said she still used to start up singing Welsh hymns.
Amazing the way the mind and memory works.

Piggywaspushed · 04/12/2023 06:51

I have read the Telegraph article and am still not really happy, to be fair!

I think the problems for many to the left of Labour begin with him writing in The Telegraph...

BIossomtoes · 04/12/2023 07:46

The fact that The Telegraph is carrying articles by Keir Starmer and again this morning by Wes Streeting is very telling, it’s a clear acknowledgment that Labour is now a force to be reckoned with. It’s more important for them to address the increasing number of wavering Tories than appease the far left.

Zonder · 04/12/2023 08:01

What are you not happy about @Piggywaspushed ? I felt like KS was making a deliberate comment against the current government while reminding tory voters that once they had someone who put the country first too. I think it was a clever move if it wasn't for the deliberate spin the MSM and Twitter verse have taken against him.

Zonder · 04/12/2023 08:02

Good point @BIossomtoes
