Cant remember reading an Comment piece that I have agreed with more.
Local government is the fabric of our society. Well run, well funded local governement is what makes day to day life easier.

But Local government has had a 27% cut in funding since 2010 and simultaneously been given increased statutory responsibilities.

'When Osborne exempted the NHS and schools from austerity, he threw the burden on to local government. There followed an unplanned and disorderly change to the structure of the state. One in six libraries have closed. One in four bus services no longer run. Youth services have been cut by more than 60 per cent."

"It is not uncommon now for children’s services and social care to account for 70 per cent of the budget of a local authority."

Article goes on to say that local government can't afford to increase wages which would transform social care. Hence why we recruit social care workers from around the world.

Fix local government - yes that means more money - and we would all benefit.

Apologises if the link doesnt work.

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/council-crisis-will-hurt-tories-in-election-year-k66rc50nq

This is in part why the Tories lost North Shropshire.
Yes of course Patterson being a crook was part of it as well.

But a lot of the constituency is deeply conservative but a whole swathe of local services have been cut, its all very well saying we have spent xmillions on road improvements or will spend ymillions on opening a railway station, but that is pointless if there isn't a bus to take students to study in the 6th form. A particularly severe example of cuts to local services: if you had a remand hearing at the "local magistrates" court and lived in North Shropshire and were to travel by public transport. For a 10am hearing you would have to set off in the middle of the afternoon the previous day in order to get to it, since the more local courts have been shut. Is it any wonder that the police are spending more and more time picking people up and driving them to court having missed a hearing?

https://www.theguardian.com/inequality/2023/nov/27/uk-spends-more-financing-inequality-in-favour-of-rich-than-rest-of-europe-report-finds

In inequality news…

The richest 1% in the U.K. pay the lowest taxes of any large country in Europeand the U.K. is now the second most unequal rich country behind the U.S. Not that this government are going to do anything about that.

Excuse me. It is communist to suggest that we have an inequality problem in the UK.

IClaudine · 27/11/2023 12:34

mibbelucieachwell · 27/11/2023 11:28

The 1% deserve to keep their earnings though. They're workaholics who make good choices. We're lucky to have them and shouldn't risk them moving away if we increase their taxes. Then we'd have even less revenues from their taxes.

Let's face it. It's not nice to hear, but people struggling financially don't really deserve to have a high income. Given that some people manage to make a good income they're obviously either not working hard enough or are doing something wrong. Financially successful people deserve their successes built on jolly hard work and doing the right thing. People who whine about unfairness don't want to admit they're jealous.

Could I get a job as an advisor to the Tory party d'you think?

Don't be so utterly ridiculous. You are being far too soft on the poor here. You clearly don't hate them enough to be a Tory party advisor.

You need to toughen your stance! Go out and push a few wheelchair users into a busy road, that'll be a good start and more in keeping with Tory values.

annabelindajane · 27/11/2023 12:54

So folks realistically what’s the answer to all the above? Is there a country you can point to that’s ticking all the boxes ?

Notonthestairs · 27/11/2023 12:58

Yes jgw - it's all those local services that have been sliced away that contribute to an area's overall functioning/management. The losses might be invisible to most people but they still have an impact on wellbeing.

I think the link between local government being too stretched to pay more for social care and the necessary increase in migrants working in that sector needs more attention. The Conservatives increased responsibilities and costs whilst simultaneously cutting funding.

People will complain when their council tax goes up but LG can't drop 27% of funding and increase/improve services.

Notonthestairs · 27/11/2023 13:00

I don't need to point at another country, I'm focused on my own. Nothing wrong with aspiring to better governance.

what difference would another countries example make? There are numerous variables which, if I’m honest, makes me suspicious of your reasons for questioning in that direction.

DuncinToffee · 27/11/2023 13:03

There are no quick solutions but building at undoing this mess would be a start.

pointythings · 27/11/2023 13:19

It's always harder to repair something you have allowed to decay or have wilfully destroyed. But just because there are no quick and easy fixes that doesn't mean things cannot be done better. Not pouring billions into Tory donor pet projects would be a start. Build closer trading relationships with the EU and stop the useless divergence. Abandon the freeports project. Pursue furlough fraud and dodgy PPE deals and recover some of those lost billions.

mibbelucieachwell · 27/11/2023 13:31

Yes.

And who don't waste money fighting losing court cases.

Or devote their energies to undermining each other instead of doing a good job.

I think the Tories were betting that people would believe that it was local government (often not Tory run) that had made the cuts and so they would get away with it.
Sadly for them people aren't nearly as stupid as the Tories think they are.

annabelindajane · 27/11/2023 14:29

I agree re comments on local government . I’m in Scotland where things are a whole lot worse and we have vanity projects galore and an SNP with 22 police investigations . SNP make the Tory’s look like saints .

However we do have a lot of people who could work but don’t .I know one and by default hear about their chums who have been signed off with Anxiety and in this particular persons case saved up enough ( they give it to their family to invest for them ) to put on an extension to their house . Maybe our hard pressed GPs might have a lot to answer for .

There are plenty of benefit bashing threads on MN, maybe try one of those. There are several of us on this thread who care for disabled relatives and/or are disabled ourselves. As one of them, I don't appreciate you barging in with this sort of ableist derail.

Won't be engaging further.

Efacsen · 27/11/2023 15:24

@IClaudine must be 'an extension' for a dolls house

The benefit bashing threads are >> that way. Come back when you have some understanding of the complexities.

If we're getting invaded by 'representatives' the Tories must be running really scared.

Terrified. They’re still using the “know what a woman is” line but central office has now given them a new one so “Labour has no vision” has been added. Anyone know what the Tories’ vision is?

Thanks for this ICaudine & others I’ve just received my PiP renewal form today & spent all morning crying really don’t need to read sort of nonsense annabelindajane chimed in with.

I've just been reading a book about African countries since independence and I've come to the conclusion that the Tory vision is to emulate the kleptocrats who amassed billions while trashing their country. For tribal loyalties they are substituting Brexit/anti Brexit, trans issues and immigration.

IClaudine · 27/11/2023 16:52

So sorry to hear that @dontcallmelen It is such a cruel system.

pointythings · 27/11/2023 16:53

I do wonder why any 'representative' would bother coming onto these threads with the same old 'my uncle's friend's cousin's dog's auntie knows someone whose family haven't worked for 15 generations' spiel. They must know they will not be taken seriously. By all means come on here and have a serious debate about how we get people with long term conditions into work in a positive way (which is actually happening on the benefits thread, some good patient stalwart voices there), but don't spout Daily Mail bollocks and expect us to embrace it.

I'll tell you who doesn't know what a woman is.

Theresa May, former Tory Prime Minister
Amber Heard, former Tory SoS & Minister for Women and Equalities
Nicky Morgan, former Tory SoS & Minister for Women and Equalities
Penny Mordaunt, Tory Leader of the House and former SoS & Minister for Women and Equalities
Caroline Nokes, Tory Select Committee Chair, Women and Equalities
Maria Miller, Tory former Select Committee Chair, Women and Equalities
Crispin Blunt MP, Tory former Chair of the APPG on Global LGBTQ+

The Tories are as lost as Labour. They put some very dangerous and gullible people in charge of what they thought was a fringe issue and are still trying to work out what the fuck happened.
