Just looking at Laura Trotts utterances this morning. Clearest linking of (parts of) British workforce (refusal to work) & (need for) Immigration that I've yet seen. 'Disabled people cause Immigration' anyone ???

Did she say that? Because I wondered how they would try to shift responsibility and that would fit alongside the Britannia Unchained lazy British worker themes.

DuncinToffee · 26/11/2023 10:40

Here is a clip of Trott

#TrevorPhillips: Without this level of immigration we have no functioning NHS, social care would be a disaster & hospitality would be a wasteland.. so you're going to bring down the numbers come what may?

Laura Trott: "We have a plan to make sure this is the case.."

I'm in a group in an NHS Chronic Pain Service. You have to be really buggered to be referred: at the end of the road of diagnosis and available treatment options. There is a huge waiting list for the Service.

We divide loosely into two categories: people with inflammatory and/or osteo arthritis; and people who have spinal problems incurred working in the NHS or in care work.

These former care workers are having to be taught to 'retrain their brains' to just get out of bed in the morning. They can't lift, bend, carry or sit for long periods. Some people who attend group in person have to take their own mats to lie on.

These Chronic Pain Services aren't 'back to work' routes. Being blunt, for many participants they act as suicide prevention and drug addiction prevention courses.

I'm not finding Laura Trott's argument persuasive. She would better devoting her time to looking at that issue of 'available treatments' and questioning why they have been decreasing for well over a decade.

Notonthestairs · 26/11/2023 10:57

lol at Trott saying that they've taken concrete steps with the NHS workforce plan.
It has taken them 6 years to draw up that plan.
Medical schools won't increase student numbers until 2025 and as far as I am aware we don't know when universities will begin training the extra 100,000 nurses necessary.
In addition pay wasn't dealt with in the plan.
There are already bottlenecks in training where they aren't enough consultants available to teach - that hasn't been addressed at all.
And then there is the persistent failure to invest in infrastructure which holds back productivity.

There is no quick fix and certainly nothing concrete will be achieved in the next year.

medianewbie · 26/11/2023 12:02

@Notonthestairs no, those were my words (which I'd not made clear, sorry)
It just 'hit' me what The Plan was from the narrative this morning. Blame one disadvantaged group for the existence of another one. I'm old enough to remember the demonisation of single mothers in the 1980s. This is worse & certain sections will lap it up sadly.

That's basically drivel isn't it. She saying they will reduce the need for immigration for the NHS by getting long term unemployed people into work through intensive support. Does she really think that any amount of intervention is going to get Dave, who spends his days drinking special brew on the bench outside Sainsburys, working as an itu nurse?

DuncinToffee · 26/11/2023 12:11

How did their plan getting retired doctors, consultants etc back into the NHS go? That went quiet very fast.

OP posts:
InMySpareTime · 26/11/2023 12:17

I'd assume a disproportionate number of long term jobless would be unable to get a DBS either, for various reasons, which would preclude them from any work with vulnerable people.
Not saying all (or even most) jobseekers are dodgy, just that the same factors that lead to chaotic lifestyles can also lead to long term worklessness, and it's harder for a person with a chaotic lifestyle to get a DBS.

VimtoVimto · 26/11/2023 12:43

It’s a bit like the argument that Brexit would increase opportunities for the unemployed. It’s not as if they would suddenly develop the ability to be brain surgeons.

Notonthestairs · 26/11/2023 12:53

@medianewbie I agree that they are developing a narrative that they've been forced to increase migration because of the feckless/lazy/disabled - nothing to do with their lack of workforce planning, investment, low wages etc.

Cornettoninja · 26/11/2023 13:06

Brexit. Love your country, hate the people in it 👍

wonder how long it takes to realise that thinking you’re on the same team doesn’t mean that anyone else thinks that way too.

AutumnCrow · 25/11/2023 17:26

I find Penny Mordaunt more detestable for many reasons, but for some reason the boudicean blonde seems to get away with it more and is left to 'shmooze the tearooms'.

AutumnCrow thinking about it you are spot on about Penny Mordaunt she is very unpleasant but conceals it much better than the likes of Badenoch, Gullis, 30p Lee, Mogg, etc etc etc

Mordaunt was Minister for Disabled People 2016-17 and was an absolute barracuda over the introduction of PIP, and was widely accused of misleading the House of Commons at that time. That's when I first really noticed her.

Accusations of dishonesty, duplicity and laziness have been levelled against her a number of times ('Turkey is joining the EU', and the whole gender ideology crap she snuck in), but she seems to continue to enjoy her attractive image.

Piggywaspushed · 26/11/2023 19:59

My DH fancies her. It is really that basic.

Cant remember reading an Comment piece that I have agreed with more.
Local government is the fabric of our society. Well run, well funded local governement is what makes day to day life easier.

But Local government has had a 27% cut in funding since 2010 and simultaneously been given increased statutory responsibilities.

'When Osborne exempted the NHS and schools from austerity, he threw the burden on to local government. There followed an unplanned and disorderly change to the structure of the state. One in six libraries have closed. One in four bus services no longer run. Youth services have been cut by more than 60 per cent."

"It is not uncommon now for children’s services and social care to account for 70 per cent of the budget of a local authority."

Article goes on to say that local government can't afford to increase wages which would transform social care. Hence why we recruit social care workers from around the world.

Fix local government - yes that means more money - and we would all benefit.

Apologises if the link doesnt work.

Council crisis will hurt Tories in election year

High migrant numbers are bound up with desperate efforts by austerity-ravaged local authorities to keep care homes open

Pesky little African countries should know their place. Don’t they know who we are?

mibbelucieachwell · 27/11/2023 11:28

The 1% deserve to keep their earnings though. They're workaholics who make good choices. We're lucky to have them and shouldn't risk them moving away if we increase their taxes. Then we'd have even less revenues from their taxes.

Let's face it. It's not nice to hear, but people struggling financially don't really deserve to have a high income. Given that some people manage to make a good income they're obviously either not working hard enough or are doing something wrong. Financially successful people deserve their successes built on jolly hard work and doing the right thing. People who whine about unfairness don't want to admit they're jealous.

Could I get a job as an advisor to the Tory party d'you think?

mibbelucieachwell · 27/11/2023 12:10

That's what the current government ideology seems to be.

Which they serve up to us with a generous dollop of corruption and a side of self-interestedness.
