MIL said I need to take better care of my husband

I thought we could play a fun guessing game of why my MIL, without a shred of sarcasm, told me I need to take better care of my (42 year old) husband.

Winner can keep her!

I’m not even guessing, don’t want to risk the chance of winning! Total pain!

My MiL once bought me a microwave for Christmas ' So I can warm his meal up when he comes in late!' There was a big presentation as if she had bought me a diamond ring! My face must have been a picture!

A lot of you are too young to remember but the evening film on ITV was split by the 10 o'clock News. We were at MIL's house and her fairly young neighbour was watching with us, when it got to 10 o'clock the neighbour commented that she could hardly wait to see the rest of the film. MIL said 'But you'll have to miss it, Steve will be wanting some supper when he gets home from the pub!' and went on to say that she would need to put the chip pan on etc. I didn't help by asking when he'd broken both arms and how many chippies would he walk past on his way home. She was definitely of the older generation, born 1910 and very proud that her husband wouldn't allow her to go out to work when they got married.

My ex's mother complained to me that he needed a haircut and that I was failing as a wife (well we weren't married so fuck that anyway...) because I should have been reminding him and booking him an appointment and making sure he went.
I told her his hair had nothing to do with me and it was his choice as to what he wanted to do with his hair and his job to organize a haircut if he wanted one.

Dottypotz · 21/11/2023 20:07

Because you didn’t wash his lunchbox out after eating his own cake? (True story)

Dibbydoos · 21/11/2023 20:07

He visited her wearing odd socks....

His jumper was a bit rough.

His jacket needed washing.

He's lost weight.

He looks tired.

@Iwasafool was her name Pamela? I'm hoping there aren't two such vile people in the world 😕

Cherrysoup · 21/11/2023 20:23

A manager at work wears odd socks every day. I asked him why and he said he doesn’t care if his socks match and doesn’t have time to match them. He is otherwise extremely smartly dressed, very nice suits, hair cut very often, lovely shoes. Makes me smile.

@Iwasafool I wrote my last msg before reading your update. Definitely not the same person.

These people walk among us, be vigilant.......

No not Pamela so there must have been two, she is no longer with us so it's all on Pamela now.

She was a strange woman, not totally evil, she often meant well just not to me 😀 My husband had a very strained relationship with her, it was sad as she desperately wanted a good relationship with him but she just couldn't control herself and after a lifetime of it he was always on alert to take offence. I try very hard to be on good terms with my sons' wives/partners and we seem to get on, I hope they don't secretly hate me.

My gran, born 1900, used to proudly tell the tale of getting married. In those days working class people didn't usually get a honeymoon so she finished work on the Friday as granddad expected her to give up work, they married on the Saturday and then on the Monday morning she made him breakfast and as he left for work he said, "You can have anything, you just have to ask."

Well she went and got her job back and when he got home she said, "I can have anything, I don't have to ask as I'm back at work." Apparently he wasn't happy and her big regret was that when she eventually separated from him she couldn't afford a divorce as they were very expensive in those days. She hated "old fashioned" things, she was always keen to have anything new and her big crush was Sean Connery as 007.

I'm like that, I can't see why people would get upset although I do tend to buy socks in a pack so I've got a good chance of them matching with no effort.

I wear matching socks because non matching ones might feel different on each foot and that would upset me.

Guesswho88 · 21/11/2023 20:45

Hello55 · 21/11/2023 19:38

Asian? That sounds quite stereotypical and ignorant.. its no different to the backward view of the mil that men need looking after 🤔

Are you saying that Asian familes aren't like that?! I'm just stating a fact.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/11/2023 20:46

I reckon it's own dinner or own kids.

I don't notice but as I said I generally buy a pack, or maybe 2, of matching socks so it isn't much of an issue. It does happen though and it doesn't worry me. Presumably it doesn't bother the OPs husband so no issue.

MysticalMegx · 21/11/2023 21:09

And this is why I never want to get married 😅

Circularargument · 21/11/2023 21:34

Guesswho88 · 20/11/2023 11:06

Are they Asian OP? or your MIL is very elderly (respectfully). As in she conforms to past generational expectations..

Nonsense. My late MIL, who would be 109 if she were still alive, would have had zero truck with such rubbish. She brought up DH and his sisters to shift for themselves equally.

Doingmybesteveryday · 21/11/2023 21:39

What is it with mums and sons? Silly old hag

ChannelNo19EDT · 21/11/2023 21:43

@SerafinasGoose yeh, my mother rejects all feminism and shudders when I criticise the patriarchy. It's like she won't acknowledge that the patriarchy doesn't suit women. My mother has kind of sneered at younger women who need career to have an identity. But she doesn't realise that her identity is a self-deception. Nobody can give her any feedback, she's so sensitive, so defensive. /she is the boss of my father, he's her foot soldier backing her up no matter what. So being in control of the household, she derides other women for wanting control of their own life.
we're not close. Shocker.

@AmazingSnakeHead wow, did he see his entitlement there?

daisychain01 · 21/11/2023 21:51

He helped you one evening by putting the kids to bed, and the poor little lamb needs to lie down to recover. He obviously looked very pale and wan when his mummy saw him.

bemusedmoose · 21/11/2023 22:29

Did he have to microwave his own ready meal because you were sick? Maybe he got a hang nail loading the dishwasher or god forbid he put the laundry on...

Honestly a husband is supposed to be a partner, an equal not a freaking pet! They are grown up humans capable of surviving without the need for 'looking after'! It's mothers like that who bring up men that dont lift a bloody finger (i hope he escaped that for your sake!)

And if i win i dont want to collect my prize - i donate it to charity!! 🤣
