If anything?

I buy books and dvds and bought these over the past week but I'm wondering what else I'm missing out on?

The book buying ban starts next year.

I buy books and clothes - but I try and be picky.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 19/11/2023 14:25

I just bought DS a junior drum set for Christmas at our nearest charity shop. They have a shed in the carpark where you can leave donations. They may be getting the drum kit back on Boxing day.

StarlightLime · 19/11/2023 14:28

Books. That's a nice little haul, op.

StarlightLime · 19/11/2023 14:33

Btw op, I noticed a Ruth Rendell in your pile that I hadn't read, checked it on Amazon and the hardcover version (which you have) is listed at £259.99 😱
You may have got far more of a bargain than you thought...

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/11/2023 14:33

Clothes, books, shoes, kitchenware, school uniform, dvds, bags, Christmas cards...

RandomUsernameHere · 19/11/2023 14:35

Nothing unfortunately. I'm a big fan of buying second hand, but don't have time to go looking around charity shops when the DCs or I need something.

Goldwakeme · 19/11/2023 14:38

I buy a lot of children's books and clothes. Sometimes toys, gadgets and jigsaws.

KirstenBlest · 19/11/2023 14:39

Clothes, shoes, books, bags, hats, accessories, bric-a-brac, Might buy CDs, DVDs.

RocketIceLollie · 19/11/2023 14:40

Shoes and handbags usually.

LudicrousDickbiscuit · 19/11/2023 14:41

DD's entire sixth form business wear wardrobe was from charity shops. One of the local charities near us does a warehouse sale every now and again. It's a bit more like a jumble sale but a bin bag full of clothes is £10. Thinking about it, her prom dress was also charity shop.

NancyJoan · 19/11/2023 14:41

Usually just books, although I help with costumes for the school plays, so do buy clothes for that purpose.

nodogz · 19/11/2023 14:45

I buy vases and glassware. And bought enough tea cups and saucers, plates and cake stands for 80 people ahead of my wedding.

I like pretty things and make sure they get used. My wedding crockery has done many more weddings, birthdays, christenings and anniversaries since.

I also check out jewellery and Xmas decs.

pizzaHeart · 19/11/2023 14:46

Cards, gift bags nowadays.
I used to buy toys when DD was little and also bought all living room furniture and quite a lot of bric-a-brac when we moved into our rental as it’s unfurnished.

Thighdentitycrisis · 19/11/2023 14:58

Too many clothes
sometimes bric a brac, cookware, bags.
rarely books
never cd’s or dvd’s
Christmas gifts for family

I used to buy virtually all kids clothes, toys and books when they were little.

UnravellingTheWorld · 19/11/2023 15:03

Knitted sweaters. Then I rip them back and use the yarn for other projects 🧶🧶🧶 (I like designing and it's less pressure to do this with cheap yarn)

GingerLiberalFeminist · 19/11/2023 15:04

Clothes (I'm losing weight so replacing my wardrobe!)
Books
Children's clothes and toys
Sometimes bricabrack

Aface7 · 19/11/2023 15:09

Books mainly though I’ve seen some people get amazing clothes in more well off areas might give it a go after Christmas

AyrshireTryer · 19/11/2023 15:09

I work in my local Cancer Research shop, we sell a lot of new stuff too. Cushions, heaters, bulbs, Christmas cards, socks, etc.

Fundays12 · 19/11/2023 15:10

Not much now most of my local ones are over priced now. Occasionally I will buy clothes or a toy for the kids

RampantIvy · 19/11/2023 15:26

I love a good charity shop browse. Unfortunately, where I live the clothes are never in my size and are usually ex Primark or similar and not worth buying.

However, I have spent ££££ on furniture for DD's unfurnished flat. British Heart Foundation are brilliant for this, and everything was good quality. I even got her fridge and washing machine from them. They come with a 6 month guarantee and are PAT tested. I bought her a TV from our local hospice retail outlet.

I treated myself to a compendium of Catherine Cookson DVDs recently - ideal for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

MuddledMadge · 19/11/2023 15:31

Clothes, books, records, furniture and nicknacks.

OuiOuiKitty · 19/11/2023 15:35

I buy a mix of things. Things for the kids, things for the house. Depends what they have. Last week I bought a suit for teen ds who needed it for a costume for a play he is in. €16 for a black suit and a white shirt, it fits like a dream too.

MrsDilligaf · 19/11/2023 15:35

Loads of stuff, I bought a load of Fat Face stuff for DH, I'm guessing that the retail price would have been around £200, but got 4 polo shirts, a shirt and 2 sweatshirts for £20.

I've had Timberland boots (£10) Ralph Lauren jumper (£2) John Lewis blouse (£1) Accesorize Scarf (£1) and a couple of other jumpers this month. I do like a rummage in a charity shop, I much prefer it to looking in the actual shops.

NannyR · 19/11/2023 15:36

Books, jigsaws, clothes and occasionally brick a brac/house stuff. My best bargain was a tent in a faded, dusty bag for £7.99 - when I opened it at home I found it was brand new, everything still wrapped in plastic - I think it had been sat in someone's garage for twenty years. It's a fantastic quality tent that would cost around £250 for the equivalent brand new today.

WhichIsItWendy · 19/11/2023 15:36

I buy books too OP.

  • clothes
  • toys
  • bone china mugs
  • cards
